Just thought I would tap this huge dataflow - since you all know pretty
much everything about everything. I decided that I was going to create
a scrapbook for my daughter's baby book since I don't like any of the
commercial premade baby books available. I bought a pack of paper and
a scrapbook, and have been plugging away at putting pictures together.
I'm not doing anything fancy, but the pages are curling on me and I was
hoping that someone could tell me why!

I have a feeling I know, but I couldn't see going to the mass expense
of using one of those double sided tape dispenser things when a glue
stick was much cheaper....did I make a major blunder there? Is there
anything I can do to fix it or make the next few better? Or will the
pages just behave once they are actually inside their sleeves in the
book?

Nope, I'm not picking this up as a hobby! I much prefer my fabric...I
just want a journaled book for each of my little ones like my mommy
made for me!

TIA,
Dannielle

I scrapbook, though as you said - nothing fancy since quilting is by
far more rewarding. I can't think of why your pages would curl unless
they're are being exposed to too much moisture. I've used many
different kinds of glue and tape - including glue sticks, without any
curling. You could try using less glue. Otherwise, if you're using
page protector type sleeves, just let those hold the pages flat. I'm
sure that eventually the pages will be tamed.

Well, there are a couple of things. Did the scrapbook come with pages? There
are a few kinds of paper used in scrapbooking. First there are the actual
pages, like the ones in a photo album. Most albums come with some, but you
can buy more to fit. Then there are papers used to decorate and enhance.
Thicker papers can be cut using special tools into various shapes (die cuts)
and borders. Thinner papers are cut using blades of different types, and
rulers much like you use in rotary cutting fabric. When you say the pages
are curling, are you speaking of the enhancements on the pages? It would
take quite a bit of moisture for the actual scrapbook pages to curl. These
are the stiff ones, meant to be embellished on both sides. If it is just the
enhancements, they should behave when they are sleeved. If the actual pages
are curling then it sounds like there is a definite moisture problem.

Using a regular glue stick was a blunder, much along the lines of using a
regular ruler to rotary cut or cheap quality thread to quilt with. The tools
matter.

However, there are different tools. Since you are not making this your
future hobby, you do not need the double sided tape dispenser (I don't like
them anyway). There are glue sticks for scrapbooking. Main differences is
they are archival - meaning the pictures won't be affected later by bad
Ph's, they are skinny - less glue is put on the paper, and they are lower
moisture. I've bought some of these from craft stores (but don't tell my
sister, she is a consultant with a scrapbook company, but they do not use
glue).

The pens you buy to embellish journal can be used for quilts, if you buy the
right ones. After all, we want our quilts acid free too.

I tried to Google for a picture of the glue stick I have, and I could not
find it. But, I found a page for beginners, with links to different
products. Maybe this will help.

Heh, even bookmarked it myself. The site even has links to pages you can
print for free die-cuts.

I have to admit one thing. I have made quite a few pages, usually at events
my sister has organized (scrapbooking events are like Tupperware parties,
you eat, you buy stuff, and you play). I have not yet bound them into an
album!

The book came with white pages inside the sleeves, but I bought a pack
of pastel paper for the pages in the basic color scheme that I wanted
to use for her. I bought a scrapbook glue stick to attach the photos,
and there isn't much in the way of embellishment at this point. I plan
on adding some journaling by writing on the computer and printing it
out and pasting it in as well. Maybe I'm just using too much of it
since it is a rather fat stick.....

Thanks for the link. As soon as DD gets put down for her nap, I'll
spend some time cruising the site!

I'm making a scrapbook for DGD and I use rubber cement and find that I like
it better than the glue sticks.
