I have blocks from the European Block swap last year and a club swap this
year added to them. My focus fabric is a dergy batik which you might be able
to pick up. The photo is lighter than they are unfortunately.
My request to you all is what colour sashing would you use to bring all
these blocks together?I might even have to go shopping in my jammies for
this.They should hopefully be here.

I don't have the answer, Estelle. I don't even know what 'dergy' is.
However, you'll just need to audition some colors to see what creates the
mood you are looking for. Put a piece of soft green up on your design wall
or your table or bed and place some of the blocks on top so there's just an
inch or so of the green peeking out around them. Try black, then watermelon
pink. Purple. If you stash isn't big enough, go get your shirts ( or
DH's). Your blocks have so many colors and styles going that there probably
are going to be several colors that will call to you. This is my favorite
part of quilt design; have fun. Polly

I got some small pieces of fabric out and tried them against the screen!
First time I've done that and it was great.

I tried a black, navy, red-purple and blue-purple. They all looked just
fine; though, as you said the colours are darker than they appear, that
might be a bit dark overall?

Then I tried a blue-turquoise and a more green turquoise, mid value.
They looked better than the dark, and the whole thing lit up -
especially with the more greeny-peacock-y colour. Only thing was, I
couldn't quite picture it with the vivid red/pink?

Not a lot of help at pinning a colour down, but might give you something
to consider.

When I looked at it, the red wanted to spread itself throughout the quilt.
What about that as a sashing?

I have just taken another picture of the blocks and they are nearer the
colours. The dark red /peacock colours seem to stand out to me,but I do love
Purple. Take another look if you want!!

Hello Polly. these are nearer the true colours and Dergy might mean more to
you as it could be construed as depressing. ! Lol Maybe sludgy would be a
better description for the colour. I am having fun on the lounge floor
anyhow!

Definitely a mottled black! Maybe a tone-on-tone or one with a trace of
tans in it? Blacks always make a quilt look so rich and elegant!

Howdy!

Yellow.

Or a light green.

These are, indeed, dark and rather dreary color combinations; need some
light to liven it up, some clear colors, which will work just fine
w/ batiks; no more muddy colors, please. <g>

Good luck!

I would go for the red sashing for a *wow* look ... or cream for a
more subtle, softer look. If it was my quilt - red all the way. :-)

These are the colors I would audition for the sashing, in the order I
would try them.
gold/tan/sand (try one or all)
burgundy
teal
light to medium green
red
black

doing. It looks like we've suggested just about everything and Estelle is

I think I'm with Sandy. While red might look great with the majority of the
blocks, it might just be awful with the really red block. I'd try laying
them out mixed up, interspersing the dark ones with the lighter ones.
Having the darks in one place makes the choice harder (IMO). I normally
really love black, I don't think it would work so well here, since so many
darks are included. I think I'd try to find a color that isn't in any of
the blocks and go from there.

Something light, maybe gold or light purple
btw the blocks look great.

I think i like the idea of staying in the batik mode. intersperse the
darker blocks with the lighter ones and as a "pop" color, maybe use a
cream/yellow/gold batik in the center sashings and a darker goldish
batik as a border next to the blocks. Then i think i'd use a cranberry/
maroon as an outside border.
I absolutely love the pink/cream/burgundy block. it's like a log
cabin, broken up.
do you have the pattern for that one? and the fan one?

wow, great blocks you got there, Estelle.
they sure are dergy tho, had to look that up in real dictionary, then
googled it, no luck so glad you clarify'd that for us, lol.
i wonder, just to thru another spanner into the works....
if you border each block in a different colour.
maybe just use 3 different colours for that, so not every one is different.
then add more sashing all the same colour.
this would highlight colours in each block, then unify the whole thing with
the one sashing.
so many different colours there that i reckon need a bit of highlighting.
sorry if that is just too much hard work, lol.
makes the whole thing bigger but well it is what i came up with.
only on first cuppa so i could be waaaaaaaay out in left field.

That 'broken' block looks like it was made by bordering a center
square until it was over sized, then making one wonky slash top to
bottom and sewing it back together, then making a wonky slash side to
side and sewing back together, then trimming to size wonky fashioned.
I haven't the slightest what it is called, but that's how I would try
to make it.

Well Estelle, I'm going to throw an even bigger spanner in the works.

As much as red is my favourite colour... really is........ that red
block sticks out like a sore thumb.
Why don't you remove it and make a separate wall hanging or use it as
the center of a medallion and work around it that way. Then make 2
extra blocks in colours that go with what's there already.
Then on similar lines to what Jeanne suggested, use 2 different
sashing fabrics in the same colour but one dark and one light. Put
the light around the dark blocks and dark around the light blocks.
My suggested colour would be burgandy in light and dark. Take a look
at the Hoffman hand dye batik solids.

My twopenny worth. Good luck. Let us know what your final decision
is.

Elly
