Question about Watercolor Quilts

I was wondering if those of you who had experience making the watercolor
quilts using the gridded fusable would mind sharing some info. First off,
if one is making a wallhanging, does it take long to make? I'm thinking
about making one for my DM-i-L for Christmas. Second, do you have to be
very advanced skill-wise to make one? Third, did you cut all the squares
yourself or did you purchase the pre-cut ones?

I made a watercolor quilt without ever cutting a single square. There are
two books out called Strip-Pieced Watercolor Quilts and More Strip-Pieced
Watercolor Quilts. It is amazing how sewing strips of florals together this
way and that and then slicing them down and sewing them together again gives
you the look of a charm watercolor quilt but without the huge work of all
the charms.

I have no advice to you on that method, but thought I'd share an
alternative!! I just working some weeknights put the whole lap quilt
together start to finish in two weeks....which for me is VERY quick.

I made a watercolor wreath (that my mother keeps hinting she wants). You do
a bunch of the squares using strip piecing and some that individual. There
were some that were strip pieced with 5 fabrics, some with 4, some with 3,
etc. I kept them all in separate little baggies so that sorting them was
super easy. I then laid out the quilt and would mark off each row as I laid
it out (like I would do in the olden days when I would knit) so that I knew
exactly where I was, especially if I quit for a while. Sewing it together
went real quickly.

I used the fusible grid too for my Watercolor quilt...Because I hadn't

a lot of the fabric that I needed for the design I had to fussy cut the
squares
--which took more time but worked great nevertheless..
I don't know how I did it....perhaps it is the wide lines on the grid...but
after I sewed all the verticals seams, clipped...then sewed the horiz .
seams,
the piece was longer than it was wider ( or was it the reverse?)..Anyway..
I guess I should have been a bit more careful and I wonder if anyone else
had this happen to them?...I loved the technique but I guess I have to be
a bit more careful when sewing and actually might even draw a tiny line
to fold on. Mary

I bought a kit with all the squares precut. I used the fusible grid, it was
a little thick at the seams, but I can live with it. It wouldn't do if I
were hand quilting. The longest part was laying out the watercolors. The
sewing didn't take an hour. I made a small wallhanging.

I've made about 5 of the mini watercolor hearts featured in Quick Watercolor
Quilts. I love them and they go fast. The hardest part is picking the fabric,
so whenever I see a set that will work I get them.

I recently bought Dina Pappas' book, _Quick Watercolor Quilts_, which is
entirely devoted to this method. (I believe she's the one who invented it,
but I'm not sure.) I haven't yet made any projects from it, but as soon as
the fabric I've ordered arrives, I will! The book makes the process seem
very simple, so that the main work is cutting out a whole bunch of squares
of fabric. If you can wait a couple of weeks, I'll let you know.

Although maybe I'd better check it with some of the fabric you'll be
using, so it's a fair test. ;-)

Oh, and if you're interested in buying the book, I got it at buy.com.
They don't have as wide a selection as Amazon, but they've got some great
prices, and free shipping. NAYY.
