I'm in the process of making my first watercolor quilt; a simple flower
wreath wall hanging. I've placed all of my 2" squares on the grid
(Quilt-Fuse), fused them, and sewn all the vertical seams. When I got that
far, I thought the seams were going to be very bulky when I sewed the
horizontal seams, so I slashed all the vertical seams and pressed them open.
Now I've sewn the horizontal seams and am wondering if I should slash and
press them open also. With the fusible grid backing, they seem too thick to
me to be quilted easily. Any input from those of you who have done this?
I'm leaning toward opening these seams too, so the whole thing will lay
flatter.

Hi Alice,
I did not open the seams in either of the two that I made, although I think
that would have made it lay more flat. Are you machine quilting? If so, and
you machine has this feature, you can adjust the pressure of your presser
foot. It doesn't matter if you have a fancy machine or simple. Some machines
have this feature, and some do not. And, of course, different machines have
different ways for you to do this. My Bernina 160 has a dial on left side of
the machine. My featherweight has a screw on the top left side. Your sewing
machine manual should have information about this.

One woman in my quilting group was having trouble with getting skipped
stitches (mq'ing) as she tried to quilt her watercolor with quilt-fuse in
it. She ended up switching to a ball point needle of all things, and the
skipping stopped.....just an FYI if you run into the same problem.

Hope the quilting goes well for you,

In my instructions, it says to clip at the cross seams, just to the
stitching line. Then alternate the directions of the seam allowances when
doing the horizontal seams. I don't think I would try to hand quilt one of
these - machine is the way to go!
