I saw an article in the Sunday paper where I live, and it showed some
"penny folk art Christmas ornaments". The craft is a very old one, but
I can't seem to find anything about it. Any ideas or website info?

Hello Sunshine
I think you may be thinking of the penny rugs influence, here's some info:

(copy/pasted from a book review on the net):
Barbara Bond/America At Heart
KEY WORDS: Textiles, jewelry, penny rug, America At Heart,
In the late 19th century, pioneer women used copper pennies as templates to
cut concentric circles from the precious woolen scraps they saved. These
were sewn atop each other with a buttonhole stitch, and then attached to a
cloth backing to fashion a table covering, or "rug." As has been the case
with so much of what was created of necessity but has endured because of its
simple charm and primitive beauty, these rugs, called 'penny' rugs are still
treasured. This company has captured the graphic appeal of these rugs, with
their pure colors and bold stitching, in their heart-shaped penny pin, which
offers a piece of tradition for you to wear, or share.
