I always like ugly fabric challenges <vbg> Some others I've seen lately
are crayon... everyone takes 2 crayons out of bag and must use those colors
in their quilt for at least x% of quilt. I also like it when they are
given a really plain pattern and then participants choose fabric & quilting
but they have to use pattern... those are fun to look at too.....

LOL had to chime in...I was reading down your list, Jess, and I could
have sworn that the last one was "frood". Which made me wonder how the
people in Estelle's guild would know anything about Wendy, or what their
interpretations might be,.....lol

split complementary
Complementary colors are those straight across from each other on the color
wheel (red-green, yellow-purple, blue-orange)
with split complementaries you take one color and then the 2 colors on
either side of it's complement ie blue and red orange and yellow orange and
use only those

OR analagous
3 colors next to each other on the tertiary color wheel ie red-violet,
violet and blue-violet and use only those

good color study project. you can use tints and tones and shades of those
but they have to be in the color family chosen

My favourite is still the Potluck challenge because it lets everyone have
fun..no matter what the skill level is. The rules we used are at
http://members.shaw.ca/kigraham/mystery.html
click on "Mystery Quilters challenges"

There are a couple of other fun challenges there too...the Name Game has
been used by several guilds with a great deal of fun choosing colour
"names" -- I still chuckle over L is for Liver.

We have a couple of groups here that have challenges or
swaps on themes. Here are some of theirs -

Curves - no straight lines

Local flora and/or fauna, or local landmarks/buildings

BQ recently had a challenge where each entrant was given a
random copy of the front page of the local paper (from
anytime in the past 60 years) and asked to interpret the
headlines in a small wall hanging. It was a 150th
Anniversary year for the city.

Monochromatic - each quilter pick one colour and work in
shades and tones

Nominate one fabric (possibly a really odd or ugly one) to
be incorporated in every quilt

A lot depends on how many take part too.

If you want to see what ideas others have used try browsing
through the Electric Quilt Challenge pages - monthly design
challenge for EQ software. There are some interesting
challenge themes there.

I found the challenge we did on RCTQ a few years back most stimulating -
and I loved making the quilt for it, too. That was a quilt inspired by
a favourite poem. Then another group I belonged to for a little while
had a challenge for a quilt inspired by a song (they did specify that it
had to have blue in the title, but I don't know if that's necessary to
you?)

Infamous.

Illustrious, notorious, renowned, outrageous,
and sometimes even scandalous.

Ragmop/Sandy--I just love people like that ;-D

My group did "Sunbonnet Sue Volunteers", with Sue invovled in lots of
interesting activities. Not really a Sunbonnet fan myself, but it turned
into a great quilt. A design and applique challenge.

And they'd have to include a towel in the quilt, Jess?

Here are two challenge themes that were
popular in my guild.
"A tisket a tasket, a green and yellow
basket!!" We received a piece of yellow,
a piece of green, and orders to make a
quilt with a basket theme.
"Out of the Blue!" Make a quilt that
interprets that statement.
Also: Log Cabin Blocks, Medallion Quilt.

Well - I have always believed that if you can't be famous
you should strive to be infamous!

Remember - well-behaved women seldom make history!
