Well, Folks, it's been quite a struggle. But I'm pleased to report that
my head, however bloody, is unbowed.
There weren't as many real "adventures" with this project, but it took
as long as EVERY room re-do I've done in this house, and I'm pooped, but
happy. I have a brand new bedroom! Still some final things to do (not
the least of which are to put the rest of the stash back up on the
shelves and then tackle the ungodly MESS I always make in the kitchen
when I tackle a project like this), but tonight, I have an
almost-finished room.
Background for the newbies: I live in a craftsman-style bungalow
(built in 1924 by a couple of Yankees who didn't KNOW that one doesn't
build basements in the southwest). Delightful place, with wavy glass in
the multitude of windows, hardwood floors and ten-foot ceilings. I've
"done" a room about every 2 years since I've been here, and sorta worked
my way through the house (sewing room, on the front, will probably be
the enxt one), using a whole LOT of paint (wallpaper simply defeats me,
and it costs more time and money than paint). My bedroom has waited a
long time, and everyone knows that I like purple.
And so, I have a PURPLE bedroom! Well, not really "poiple"-purple ...
more the color we called "orchid" back in the '50's. But I had some
ideas (how come it IS that my "ideas" always require trip after trip up
and down the damn' ladder?).
The bedroom had two walls of textured wallpaper, tone-on-tone ivory
with structured garlands of tiny blue flowers; two walls of dirty-white
flat paint, and a blue sparkly border around the top. All that had to
go. I want purple!
I got the in-the-ditch quilting done on the two Christmas presents (for
1999, I might add :-) ), so I could get to work on the bedroom. How
come I ALWAYS forget how much TIME it takes, just for prep? How come I
ALWAYS think (even with the prep, and harking back to the days of 8'
ceilings, and before I got "ideas") "I can paint a room in a day"?
Monday night, I started in. Went down into the basement the retrieved
the Painting Stuff. Took inventory. Need roller-pads, painter's tape,
one of those straight-edge thingies (what happened to the old one?).
Made my list for my run to the store.
Tuesday morning, I started in. Took hardware and switchplates off
(including removing doors and taking off that hardware), pictures and
tsachkies off the walls and furniture. Furniture moved to middle of
room. Woops. The wall-unit which holds the Stash will not budge. I'm
really gonna have to UNLOAD the dang thing before I can move it. So I
unloaded. And unloaded. Piled fabric on the couch. Tried again. No
dice. Unloaded some more. Piled more fabric on the couch, until it
started to fall of. Still no luck. Piled fabric on the bed in the
sunroom. FINALLY got enough fabric out of the Stash-Unit that I could
move it.
Panting, headed for the store. Got the paint-rollers and the tape and
whatever else I thought I'd need. Home again, got to looking for the
blue paint for the ceiling. No blue paint to be found. Paint for the
bathroom (which will be next, come to think of it). Paint for the
sewing room. Paint for my bedroom, except the ceiling-paint. Back to
the store for blue paint. I want to sleep under a sky-blue ceiling, and
I will!
Now, I'm slightly afraid of heights, so getting on a ladder is always a
bit tricky for me -- especially when I'm in the middle of a room with
nothing to hold onto ... but the ceiling just went swimmingly. Pooped,
but happy, I climbed into my bed-in-the-middle-of-the-room.
Wed. morning dawned, and I'm ready to attack the wallpaper. Well. As
with much of the wallpaper in this house, this paper appears to've been
applied with epoxy-paste. And I am NOT gonna mess with the chemicals I
used to get the paper off the CEILING in the breakfast room. Nor am I
gonna rent a steamer (which doesn't affect epoxy, anyway). Just gonna
have to paint over it). Back to the store for primer.
Coated the wallpaper with primer. Lots and lots of trips up and down
the ladder. Did I mention that the new aluminum ladder, while far less
rickety than the old wooden one (now a quilt rack) has a to--shelf which
the "hooks" on the fancy paint-roller-things don't fit on? Did I
mention that the rollers tend to DRIP as one climbs back up the ladder
with a rollerful of paint?
By Wed. night, I cancelled my trip to the gym -- but one of my ideas
WORKED! I have purple stripes in my bedroom -- but the most delightful,
subtle stripes ... the same color, but matte/shiny stripes, like you see
in upholstery fabric, from time to time. IT WORKED! Cool stuff:
Painter's tape (the blue stuff). I'd never used it before. It works,
too. Using the roll of painter's tape as a plumb-bob (nah, I'm far, far
too impatient to snap a chalk-line). Uneven stripes -- some wide, some
narrow (nah, I'm too lazy to measure, and I'm fairly asymmetrical,
anyway).
Damn. The mylar came off the weird border around the top of the wall,
but the paper layer stayed behind, and it SHOWS. So, I got some more of
the blue paint, made many more trips up and down the ladder, and
dry-brushed the blue down onto the wall. IT WORKED! Can't see the
border-line, any more.
I fell into the bed in the middle of the room, happy with my blue
ceiling and subtle purple stripes -- but HURTIN'.
Thursday, I painted the woodwork a crisp white, got the paint-stripper
after the hardware (well, blow me down! that blackish stuff with
painted "borders" is solid BRASS!). And then got out the silver acrylic
paint and stamped silver fleurs-de-lis over all the walls -- again,
completely random (What? ME measure? Nah ...). Perfect, folks, just
perfect. Almost forgot. My closet is now BRIGHT-white (had been
dirty-off-white, painted over that odd mustard color which I find
everywhere I go, about 3 layers down ... but then again, I suspect
others may come to MY layers of paint and wonder what woulda POSSESSED
someone to paint a bedroom PURPLE, for crying out loud :-) )
I LOVE it when a plan comes together!
Fell into bed in the middle of the room, admiring my silver fleurs.
Today was begin-to-put-it-back-together day. Washed the miniblinds
(and the kitchen trashcan at the same time -- trashcan in shower, with
Simple Green; miniblinds in trashcan; hot water from shower; soak,
rinse, and it's all clean). Moved Stash-unit back to its place. Moved
bed to opposite wall from where it had been. Oiled good furniture (over
and over -- it's been dry, and the wood simply SLURPED up the oil).
Re-did the window treatment (OK, so I ruined the eyelet valance
sometime this week -- forgot it was a blend, and washed it with serious
bleach ... it came out slightly short of tan. Tried to dye it purple,
but it came out a pale puce (dunno what color "puce" is, but it sounds
right :-) ). So, there's a swag of the same fleur-de-lis fabric which
makes up the short sheers on the left, and the swag of gorgeous
purple-turquoise plaid taffeta on the right, with the taffeta down to
the windowsills on both sides. Big bunches of PURPLE (Really purple,
and delightfully fake) "wisteria" serve as tiebacks for the swags. Just
keen, if I do say so myself. The very strong plaid tempers what would
otherwise be a really froufy window.
Painted the pictureframes silver, and got the pictures back up -- and a
couple of others which didn't have a place to go, until I re-arranged
the room. Can't find the masonry nails so I can hang up the old mirror
(yes, the walls in this house are concrete plaster).
Got the doors re-hung (wished one of the rental-guys had been
available, for that little chore :-) ). The door to the living room
now swings shut, on its own. Don't know what to do about that.
The blue floral slipcover on the chair won't do. Turquoise, I think --
and I may get crazy and paint the wooden parts of the chair SILVER!
Nope, just got up and found the PERFECT fabric (handy, in the Stash
:-) ) -- purple and turquoise butterflies, the same colors as in the
plaid swag. Yup, Chair will HAVE to be silly-silver. But that's
another project.

Tomorrow, I'll finish putting the Stash away (got about half of that
done, today) and (yuk) clean up the kitchen. What a mess. And paint
the two grates chrome-silver (and maybe the wicker clothes-hamper, too
... it'll be its fourth "color" -- and why not?

But I had fun, and when all is said and done, it'll have been another
5-day project (so much for "*I* can paint a room in a single day" ...
again :-) ). Off to finish putting up the greens,
and
Happy Trails,
Sairey

Hi Sarah,

Your bedroom sounds beautiful, but I have to ask "Where DO you get your
energy?" (A project of that scope would have taken me weeks instead of
days.) No wonder you're whuffing.

Sweet dreams,

Sarah,
My Sarah said to tell you that your room sounds awesome, and asked when we
are going to paint one of our rooms purple. She won't allow me to paint her
room purple since it is painted "Under the Sea" complete with a 54" x 25"
portrait of Ariel, and plenty of fish and dolphins, and whales. Lots of
blues, greens, yellows and yes purple. She loves it, but said that she
would "really like to have a purple room too." Guess I'll just put on my
construction hat and add one on for her.

Congratulation on your room I know what a lot of work it is. And yeas it

What is it about Sarah's and purple? My Sarah has a purple room -
purple carpet, purple walls, purple curtains, purple sheets, purple and
yellow quilt. Actually, it's not quite as purple as it sounds - the
walls are *very* light, and the curtains and sheets are lilac. But the
carpet is definately purple!

The walls were light purple, and my sister dyed a chenille bedspread and
some throw rugs purple for me, too! I loved it! I would have had purple

I went with plum velvet, and orchid chiffon! (December wedding) It was

Howdy!
Dear Whuffy,
Take a break, go back to work and get some rest!

Sounds cool, if you just *gotta'* have purple....

One tip, on the door swinging shut:
take out one of the hinge pins, smack it w/ the side
of the hammer, just bending it a bit, not much,
and replace the pin in the hinge (may have to
tap it back into place); this should cause enough
friction to stop the door from swinging.

Ya' know, we could help you avoid all that
stash slinging & moving, really, we could,
we wouldn't mind at all, any of us!
Just tell Mr.KneeTapper to take a break....
When you get ready to do the sewing room,
give a holler.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, how many beers
kind of project was this?
When does the Finished Party begin?

You gotta remember, Kak (and the rest who were astonished at the
energy-level) that I have a VERY empty nest, here! No spouse (thank
goodness), kids grown and gone (thank goodness) -- and I was on
VACATION!
I ate when I thought about it, got busy when I wanted to, tried to
remember my 8 glasses of water (yuk). Didn't have to cook; didn't have
to entertain anyone; didn't even have to take a shower (and I didn't,
for 3 days ... YIKES! But why bother ... just wash it off all at one
time seems more efficient to me, when I don't have to show off (or smell
good) for anyone else).
Lost 3 pounds (no tellin' how much of that was the paint I washed off
at the end -- I tend to WEAR a lot of my paint :-) ). My "painting
costume" does NOT include silly things like brassieres or shoes --
there's nobody here to see, after all ...

first, original HUG quilt (lawsy, we've done a lot of HUGgin' since
then! And isn't it great?) -- and yes, quite purple (although it's a

Yup, sure DO get buried in it :( Don't miss it at all, I don't.

Haven't lived there in the last 20 years, but I still remember just how cold it was! And to
top it off...we even lived in the UP for one winter---40* for the high of the day---BEFORE
you figured in the wind factor. UGH!
So, I guess I'll just stay right here in CA --even if it did snow here for the first time
in umpteen years last Jan--today it was 60* on my thermometer......

Maaavalus, simpy maaavalus, Sarah. And such a strong constitution for a
lady. Why after all those trips up and down the ladder you'd better not
even get close to the stair-master machine at the gym. You'd have that
thing smokin'.

One question. Either during the unloading or the reloading of the stash
unit, did you come across anything strange, unusual, or forgotten. No?
Well, dahling, you have a much better handle on your stash than I do on
mine. Most of what I find in there I have very little recollection of.
That's my excuse though for always buying more.

Take care, and sweet dreams.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOh !!!!!!!!!
When I mentioned in an earlier post that I thought I didn't have much
purple to wear, I just remembered my most memorable wearing of purple. In 1972
, my husband-to-be called from Ft. Bragg ( army post) and said why didn't he
drive up to Washington D.C. the coming weekend, and we could go & get married.
I said "why not". He wore a navy suit & I wore a lavender sweater outfit. A
lavender mini "sweater" skirt with a matching lavender sweater with tiny bright
flowers embroidered on it. I had on dark brown suede "above the knee" boots
& long blond straight hair. Talk about the "flower power" look. We drove
to Alexandria, Va. to the courthouse to get married, came home and called our
parents to inform them & then went into Georgetown to celebrate with friends.
& me still in my purple wedding outfits. I still have to laugh at the photos
from that day.

Funny you should ask that! My mom rents him all the time!!! Now,
don't get any naughty ideas... She rents him to come and paint. He's
really good at painting, and he matchs colours well. Of course, if he
knew I was saying this he would deny it vigorously. (He doesn't think
it's MANLY to be good with colours.) He's excellent to bring along on
a S.E.X. expedition! (Don't get naughty ideas there either!!)
