Watercolor Quilt

I am new to quilting and am working on my first project. I have heard
talk about watercolor quilts. I have seen pictures of what I think are
watercolor quilts (being so new I'm not sure) and I think they are
beautiful. I would like to make one. Can someone tell me more about
these quilts so I can start gathering the items I will need to make
one? Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks!

The basic information on how to make watercolor quilts is in the
book "Watercolor Quilts" by Pat Maixner Magaret and Donna Ingram
Slusser. They are made up of 2" squares of many different prints
(usually hundreds of different ones) so collecting the fabric
takes a long time. Magaret and Slusser have a whole chapter
about choosing the fabrics - you'll need light, dark, and
medium prints in a variety of colors, scales, and types of designs.
Some quilt shops and catalogues sell packages of pre-cut 2" squares
which might make a good start on collecting fabrics for your quilt.
You'll also need some kind of surface on which to lay out your
squares of fabric to develop your design - a piece of white flannel
pinned to a wall works fine, the fabrics will stick to the flannel
so you can step back and look at the arrangement.
I'm in the middle of quilting my watercolor quilt, and I had a great
time designing it. Enjoy!

Carolyn: Get the McCalls Quilting Magazine. It has a iris pattern on
the cover. They have extensive "how to" on watercolors, including
drawings showing the placement of light, medium and dark fabrics.
There are also books about watercolor.

Carolyn you'll need many floral patterns, large, med. & small prints,
light med and dark values required. Look at the books by Pat Magaret and
Donna Slusser called Watercolor Quilts or book by Gai Perry called
Impressionist Quilts. They both give you all the data you require to make
the watercolor quilts. They truly are beautiful quilts when done. You can
do all kinds of designs up with watercolor schemes. Good Luck

Carolyn, the main hurdle is that you need LOTS of different fabrics, and
if you're new to quilting, you won't have that many. But the good news is
that you only need 2" square s of everything. After you get your
instructions and make a decision to start, you can do an exchange on the
net to help you get variety in your stash

Someone may already have posted this info as I am having trouble
receiving news at present. The Ottawa Valley Quilters' Guild meets
the first Monday of the month (next one on May 6) at Notre Dame High
School, 710 Broadview Avenue (off Carling). Their snail mail is OVQG,
PO Box 38083, 1430 Prince of Wales Drive, Ottawa, Ontario, K2C 3Y7.
There are several quilt shops in the area. My favourite is The
Running Stitch out west at Kanata.
