What a difference a day makes. Only 24 hours ago the winds had begun and
really started to ramp up. By this morning the house was shaking and stuff
was flying through the air. It might not have been an actual hurricane, but
our winds all night long were 85 to 100 mph. Our yard was full of flower
pots and other debris this morning from the houses on our cul-de-sac. Bert
went out and picked it up and stored it all in the garage. Once the winds
died down this afternoon he set it all out by the road and people on our
street were stopping by to pick up their stuff. We're in a private sub and
all the yards are separated by wooden fences. At least they were. One
section of ours blew down, three of the neighbors fence sections and more
all over the sub. Neighbors across the street lost a large section of
shingles. What a mess. Transformers blowing up and started tree fires all
over Anchorage and half of Eagle River didn't have power all day. We had
several inches of snow the last couple of days but this wind warmed
everything up to 50 and its all melted. This morning was really scary
driving to work. A construction sign broke loose from it's stand and went
flying through the air. All I could do was watch as it flipped through the
air towards the cars and people at the gas station. Thankfully it hit the
ground before hitting anything or anybody. No stoplights or streetlights
through town and being overcast it was so dark.

We had an inservice day at school so all the kids were at home. Probably
sleeping in which was good since they wouldn't have been out in all this.
Some things happen at just the right times it seems.

This happened about eight years ago too. We had had winds of about 30 mph
for about three weeks and then one night they all increased to about 100
that time too. Schools were cancelled and the police ordered everyone to
stay home if possible since stuff was flying through the air for about two
days straight. Lots more damage then. Boy, I sure couldn't live in actual
hurricane country. I'd be a nervous wreck.

Just hadn't said hello in a while and this seemed like a good time to pop
in.

Bert is leaving for two weeks tomorrow for a trip to our cottage in
Michigan. I'll be home alone. You all know what that means. Two weeks of
evenings and weekends to sew with no interruptions. I'm so excited. I have
a pile of UFOs all ready and waiting that I'm going to tear into. Can't
wait. I'll miss him though.

Anyways, later.

That does sound scary. Glad the damage for you was minimal.

Well, my goodness. I had no idea that Alaska weather behaved like that.
Did you have any sort of warning? Polly

Glad you and Bert are safe, Steve, even though you are playing "52-pick-up"
with the neighborhood's stuff. I enjoy a good stiff breeze myself, but once
the windspeeds top 40 MPH I get nervous as heck. I sure hope you don't get
that kind of weather more often!

Looking forward to pics of your two-week sewing spree.

That is scary. I hate wind. We have had a couple of really bad wind
storms here but gusting only to 80 or so mph I think. Insurance
companies bought a lot of roofing for folks becuase of the last one.
I would have never thought about filing a claim but the good companies
really came through for folks. Not sure about how they cover fencing.
We are near the top of a pass through the mountains and we get a lot of
wind. Usually it is just annoying but certain seasons it is bad. I
really hate wind.
Glad you are all safe and hope it has blown through.

What a zany experience! Glad you are OK.

My mom had a zany experience like this a month or so ago -- Hurricane Ike
went through Cincinnati and other parts of Ohio as a Category 1 hurricane!
