I thought what fun it would be to enter a quilt in a show for the first
time. Now this was just a local show in Big Bear, CA and I had just joined
their quilt guild. These are the ladies that made me feel so very welcome
during my first meeting with them. So I mustered up the courage to fill out
the form, include a picture, make sure my wall hanging was labeled properly
and to send it up to the mountains. It was hard to let go of it, since I had
*fussy* cut all those little squares to create watercolor flower bouquets in
baskets. But off it went. Well, today I went to the show to enjoy all the
quilts, knowing that my first ever entry would look lovely....after all, I
love this quilt....but certainly it couldn't compete with all those others
done by experienced quilters. Since I have only been quilting for two years,
I considered this just a nice opportunity to see my quilt hanging among all
the other wonders! But imagine my surprise when I saw the Viewers Choice
Blue Ribbon hanging on it! Never mind that it wasn't a Judges Blue Ribbon,
the people liked it best! I was so glad that my daughter had gone with me,
so that I could just keep marveling and repeating " I got a ribbon, I got a
ribbon!" How embarassing it would have been to share my news by walking up
to complete strangers with "I got a ribbon, I got a ribbon" <g>. Well I may
stop crowing by tomorrow, but don't count on it! Bigbearlady

And as a viewer who likes to vote in the Viewers Choice Award let me tell you
that I really think hard about which one to vote for. You can certainly be
proud of yourself for pleasing so many people. Congratulations!

have a daughter along, remember that quilters aren't really complete

Hi Phyllis,

We just got finshed watching "Big Mac" hit his 61st home run. It was a
great accomplishment. But you winning that Viewers Choice Blue Ribbon,
I'm sure you must have felt that same accomplished feeling!! And then
to top it off, to have your daughter there with you, it doesn't get any
better than that!!!!!!

PHHHHTTTTTT, Phyllis! Y'think any of the rest of us think this cyber
show-and-tell is a CONTEST?????? Am I gonna compare? Absolutely not.
I just wanna SEE ... Nah, I'll probably not have (or take) time to join

Oh, and congratulations! I'm still wondering why so often the People's
Choice isn't a judges' choice. I can think of several AWESOME quilts
I've seen in shows & magazines that NO judge ever picked - like the
Bride's Quilt (a life-size image) that was at Houston and several other
shows, but never won...

Well I think the quick answer to this is that the judges, like the viewers
have but one pick! There are more than one viewer (at least we show
organizers often hope so!) so their votes tally up and amount to another
"judges" award.

Sometimes the judges pick a quilt that they just like. Sometimes they pick
a quilt that if they could have split best of show, they could but they
can't....

So it's not a technical/originality award - either judge's choice OR
viewer's choice. It's an "I like this quilt" award.
