Hi!
I got the quilting bug about six months....
I was wondering if anyone does "watercolor quilts"? I have two books on the
subject: one writeen by Dina Pappas who does an excellent job with her
explaining her siimplified: fuse, fold & stitch method & one by Pat Magaret
& Donna Slusser "Watercolor Impressions" (they take a more elaborate
approach, but the results are beautiful....I've already done a watercolor
quilt using Dina Pappa's method & am now want to do a more complicated one
such as one described in Watercolor Impressions.....I'm afraid I'm hooked on
watercolor quiltiing! It's like working a jig saw puzzle!
Thanks! I really enjoy reading all your posts!

Hi MrsK,
I LOVE doing watercolor quilts too -- and isn't it interesting that that is
what first got me interested in quilting (I'm a new quilter, too). Are you a
painter/like to draw? Am wondering if that's what drew you . . . think it
was the link for me.
I've got Pappas' book, too, and have made "Sunflowers", Basket of Blooms"
and "Watering Can". Also made my own design of a pot with daisies using her
fuse method.
If you get a chance, take a look at the book "Impressionist Quilts" by Gai
Perry. I like her approach better. The squares on sewn on point and this
really does make a difference in the 'realistic' look of the picture. She
shows how to use 2 different sizes of squares in the same quilt, which also
makes a big difference. I no longer use the fuse stuff . . . I put all the
squares up on my design wall, and then start sewing rows. The fuse method
doesn't *really* save any time, and I've found that I'm happier with the
projects that don't have the bulk/stiffness of the fusing material. Plus I
don't have to clean off that goo off my iron when I slip up!
Glad you're enjoying 'painting' with fabric,
Rose
p.s. just wondering . . . do you find it strange that "Tea Setting" is in
Pappas' book . . . it doesn't seem to fit, does it?

Can you tell us a bit more about doing watercolour with squares on point?
I've made one regular one and really enjoy looking at it (it's in my
entrance way). The way you describe the other way has me intrigued.

All you do is cut out the squares (same as you would for regular
watercolor), BUT keeping in mind that the square is going to sit on point.
Sort of: [ ] is a regular cut square and if you rotated the square 90 deg,
you'd have a point at the bottom . . . am I making any sense? The idea is
that the points at north, south, east and west draw your eye outwards. When
using flower prints, this makes the flowers really seem as though they are
growing skywards. Have a look at the cover of the book:
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/1571200037.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
then look at:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/detail/-/books/1564771164/reader
/1/102-0875583-3041722#reader-link
where the squares are set 'normally'.
Both ways look great, but IMHO, on point is sharper.
