Hi

Does anyone know about the Knitting Nellies group, or something like
that, having a show at the Woodlawn Plantation in Virginia? Who are
they, what do they do?

Thanks!

Jill,
I'm a member of Nellies Needlers. It's a group of ladies who do various
needleworks ( any work using a needle mostly). We meet the first Wed. of
each month at Woodlawn Plantation ( 10 a.m. ) for our business meeting. They
make things for a seperate section of the gift shop called "Nellies Corner".
With the monies they get, they help to restore the house and grounds, teach
needlework classes to children ( to carry on the tradition of different kinds
of needlework - to get a new generation interested ), and other functions.
They meet in smaller groups weekly ( if a person is interested). I go every
Monday to meet with a group of ladies to work on quilting. We just finished
two "crazy quilt" lap quilts and have started the 2001 raffle quilt. It an
applique quilt that is a reproduction of one of the antique quilts that
Woodlawn owns. I'm co-chairman for this quilt. We're actually to the poing of
hand piecing the blocks together.
They have other small groups that specialize in hardanger, cross stitch,
etc., that meet on other days. You can go to as many as you like .
If you want more info, just e-mail me privately. I really enjoy it. I
love helping out with the Needlework Show in March. This year I again
volunteered to be a "take -in" person and help check the pieces in from the
people putting their needlework in the show. That means that I get to handle
and see all the pieces up close brfore the show. I'll voulunteer in the
Nellies Tearoom during the show also. I always teach the children's
classes in the summer & the children's Christmas ornament classes in December
on Saturdays. It's so enjoyable to see the kids learning and finishing a piece
of needlework.
