My DH came home last night with lots of batik fat quarters for me. I asked
him to pick up pastels or reds with other colours mixed in with it. He
proudly presented me with 19 fat quarters. Guess how many are red?
BZZ... Wrong! Answer is, (drumrole please!)--None!
How many are pastels, you ask? (Drumrole again).....None!
They are black on black, black on black with a tiny bit of blue thrown in,
or brown, or dirt green, more black on grey, grey on black etc. All of them!
I don't have any idea of where I would use these fabrics.
I looked from the fabrics to DH's proud face and said, "Pastels?" He
replyed, "Yes! How do you like them?" He actually thought these were
pastels! So ladies, be warned! If you want your DH's to pick out fabric for
you, you'd best show him what the colours actually look like first! LOL

He's a man after all......need I say more! Of course I wasn't talking about
the men on this newsgroup. Can you go back to the LQS and exchange them for
something else.....I don't see why they wouldn't do that. Otherwise you can
send them my way (ta da...problem solved). I guess being a guy and all, he
didn't ask for help (kinda like asking for directions I guess).

One: HE went to the LQS for you
Two: He got BATIKS for you
Three: Make sumpin for HIM out of them.
Four: He probably didn't ask for Pastels--just for Batiks : )
Five: USE THEM. I am very serious on this one.

Six: Next time call the LQS (or wherever he got them) ahead of time and
tell them WHAT you want and tell them that your DH will be picking them
up for you. ((Works a treat for me--the one has a cat (DH is very
allergic to cats) so I call ahead of time--tell them to have the
'whatever ready' and they do.))

me what he has and asks if there anything else)

If your DH chose them then I am sure he likes them, how about a quilt for
him made with them. Bless his heart for trying though :o) We often hear
things like blue is the new black, obviously this year darks are the new
pastels *g*

very understanding and more than glad to swap those "new pastels" for you to
the "old pastels". lol This is very funny!!! You should give that dh of

At least my sweetie has had a doctor confirm he is blue/green
colorblind. I can use this to my advantage too- because he's great at
telling me value of prints. All blue and green, and some purples, as
shades of grey.

Has your sweetie had his colorblindness checked?

may never buy you anything again. What a sweetheart to go into the fabric shop

Personally I think I like your new pastels more than the traditional ones so
if you can't bear to take them back and don't want to use them either.... I
will gladly find them a home and call them pastel for you.

I'm thinking some level of color blindness? A friend's DH painted their
house pepto bismal pink and honestly thought it was a dusty rose.

It isn't just men in general or husbands in particular. Anyone who doesn't
quilt or use fabrics all the time is going to make that sort of choice. (I
nearly wrote "mistake," but that's not quite what I mean.) A short while ago I
posted about coordinating a bunch of non-quilters from the dog group I frequent
to make a gift for one of our members who was hospitalized. I sent them to
their respective fabric stores with instructions to buy 100% cotton fabric in
any light, bright color. They came back with all sorts of variations on that
theme. In fact, the one person who followed instruction most exactly ended up
with her block sticking out a little out of place since it didn't match with any
of the others.

To me, the really interesting question is what to do with all those blacks,
greys, browns and dirt greens. I suppose you could return them, but where would
the fun in that be? I'd call them earth tones. I love that palate. You might
add just a smidgen of bright golden yellow for the look of the first rays of
sunlight coming up from a dreary night.

lavender color on a quilt, that was lying on the bed. I said, "So a pastel

LOL... That would be scary! As it was, I was thinking that he would
have to go out into the garage to do some heavy "man-stuff" because he
was turning red with his initial answer. I told him to look at the
bunny (a stuffed bunny that was given to DS for his first Christmas),
which is made of pastel blue and pink fabric. That was enough for
him...he asked me not to try and educate him on colors, reminding me
that he thought teal was a shade of brown <sigh> (wedding colors were
ivory, deep teal, and deep burgundy...some might say it sounds odd, but
it was really quite lovely).

Poor guy, give him a break... a husband that is willing to spend 3 hours
in a quilt shop buying FQs for you is a great thing! (not that I don't

somebody said it might hurt his feelings and he might tell you to go get

Yup. Similar to what I saw. I don't get it. I guess these are just people
who are afraid of color.

Are you sure that the poor man isn't color blind.

We once had a Pastor who dressed in very strange color combinations,
he had no wife. Even his socks never matched. He thought that he was
wearing grays and blacks of different shades!

I told him that I was going to make him a quilt out of 'his' pastels. he
says he wants to hang it in his office. Yikes! He wants a star quilt. So I
will mix some brilliants to go with all the charcoal grey and blacks. I'm
feeling pressured now. What have I gotten myself into! My list of quilts
that everyone wants me to make for them is growing by the minute. Where is
my clone? LOL
