However, I learned to knit at 15, to crochet at 16, did needlepoint from about

I learned to Quilt in my early 30's, and to tat in my late 30's.

The stats so far for our current ages are:
Mean = 47
Median = 45.5
Mode = 67
Not tracking starting age since some are uncertain (ME!!) and some
responded with starting age for different forms of needlework.

What Caryn says is important. For needleworkers to identify themselves
by age means you are only surveying a particular "group". Some persons
might not find themselves comfortable in any group. Besides which, it
really has to do with "when" we started, which might be more appropriate
in coming to terms with periods of "time" when needlework predominated
more than others, particularly the "type" of needlework
Oh, leave it to me to go off half-cocked and not make any sense.
Started surface embroiderying at 5 and never really stopped, though it
was pretty "coarse".
Knitting & crocheting at 12
Sewing at 12
Tatting at 19 - though didn't get it until early 50's
I'm a weary 58.

I learned to tat on a sort of dare from my grandmother. She promised me the
silver shuttle she recieved as a child if I'd learn.
So months of failure and three books later I finally got it! Sent her a
tatted bookmark, and on our next visit to her she gave me the shuttle.
She then admitted that while she did get the shuttle as a child, she herself
never managed to "get" tatting!
She is the one who gave me my first knitting needles tho, and she also
crocheted and quilted.
I actually gave the ages I picked it up as a hobby.
Learned to stitch at about 5 or 6 from my greatgrandmother who handed me a
needle and a stamped cross stitch dresser scarf from her stash, and showed me
how to follow the X's! I think, more than anything, she was trying to keep a
too active child busy and out of her way! ROFL
I also managed to earn my needlework Girl Scout badge when I was 9 or 10

Totally forgot to say I started stitching when I was 10 years old when
grandma taught me. Though I was sewing lavender sachets at age 7 for a

Started quilting age 20.
Learning crochet at a tender age of 34 (now!!!). LOL

No, I see the books for it, but haven't tried it yet. Took me so long to get
shuttle tatting I feel like I should stick to it! Not to mention I already
have the "stuff"! lol
Bobbin lace has always fascinated me, I spent some time watching a woman do it,
and it was just so pretty.
There is one thing I really like about shuttle tatting, the portability. It
takes up almost no room in my purse...which is a good thing as it already has a
book, wallet, crayons, sunglasses...and other stuff that just seems to have
collected there! <g>
Hi, I started to crochet when I was about 13 or 14. Just recently I
taught myself how to knit. I'm 42!! My daughter is now 17 and was
crocheting when she was 14. She hates following a pattern and much
prefers to make up her own. Hmm...I wonder where she gets that from?

My mother has it even worse. Her birthday is less than a week before
Mother's Day, and then for her 23rd birthday gift, I was born. Last year on
