Has anybody worked this? Any comments? It looks fairly difficult (I'm a
fairly low level stitcher). I understand that the special mat is also
available and that the info is on the leaflet. Has anybody ordered the
mat? Cost? (I forgot to ask.)

It's beautiful. I was told that while it looks difficult, the directions
are easy to understand and follow, and that it looks harder to stitch than
it actually is. It is on my "to be purchased" list, and I've never done
any specialty stitches either.

"Happily cross stitching away in beautiful Lake Orion, Michigan"
Hi all!
Intentions are usually a good thing, but on this one, you had better purchase the chart
before the year ends. According to my interpretation, the chart will not be avaiable
after Dec. 31, 1996.
Happy stitching!
Helen G. Cademy
good luck on stitching this piece!
Quite a few of us have worked this design.
It is beautiful, as you say, but it really isn't too hard, imo. Just
follow the stitch diagrams and you'll be doing the herringbone with the
rest of us!
There are a few minor corrections to the chart, available at
http://www.crl.com/~dmcmahon/.
Sorry, I can't help you with the mat. I didn't care for it and so didn't
investigate further.
Good luck with the stitching and let me know if I can help you out!

Missy - I just bought it and started it. It is WONDERFUL! :-D
The directions are solid - I don't think you will have any trouble. It is
very easy if you take each step as it comes.
As to the mat - wait until you get it done. You may want a different mat,
but it is not a bad one for a framer to cut...
Good luck - I think you will love it.

i finished the Once Upon a Lifetime sampler and it was
my first sampler. i found it did work up rather easily
and quickly. i did have a new friend (hi, sally!) who
was also working on it that i could ask questions if
i felt i was stuck. i think i'm safe in saying there are
a few other folks who have made this that could help if
you have any problems. mine is hanging up in the front
bedroom...i still need to get it frames.
the more i looked at the mat the more i didn`t really like
it. where it juts in near the tree i felt was too "pointy".
i'm hoping to get it to my framer this year so i can give it
to my mom.
i think you should jump right in and give it a go. i think
you'll like it and you'll learn new stitches...i know i did!
hope this helped?!

You can complain because roses have thorns,
or you can rejoice because thorns have roses.
Several people have also asked where to get the chart or kit. The leaflet
is available at a cost of $17.50 (postage paid) from Dee's Needleworks,
166 Franklin St., Harrisonburg, VA 22801. (800)218-4097. They also have
kits available (that is what I ordered) in three colors, plum, rose, or
blue for $55.14.
CDC (Carolyn_...@transarc.com) wrote that she had gotten the kit from
Dee's and the materials were wonderful. Mine didn't arrive yesterday :-(
Maybe today.
I bought this chart and the materials for my mother-in-law for her
birthday -- she preferred the "rose" color scheme (which is more mauve
than rose.) She is an oncology nurse (and she stitches) so she was
thrilled by the whole thing.
I've seen it done in the original set of colors, and it really is
gorgeous.

Cyn:
Write or phone the following for information on this beautiful chart:
Dee's Needleworks
166 Franklin Street
Harrisonburg, Virginia 22801
Phone toll free: 1-800-218-4097
It has the "Tree of Life" verse on it, long with a pineapple at the
top and a portion of the alphabet but there are allowances to modify
the chart somewhat. There is a tree at the bottom as well.
When I do this chart, it will be a constant reminder of the dreaded
disease that claimed my mother three years in her prime. Upon its
completion, it will be donated to the cancer clinic (in her memory)
who treated her and fought so valiantly to keep her on earth.
This project has raised over $30,000 for breast cancer research. And
a tip of the hat to Lois Nuford for undertaking such a worthy project!

I don't know about a website, but you can order the pattern through:
Dee's Needleworks
166 Franklin Street
Harrisonburg, Virginia 22801
Toll Free: 1-800-218-4097
The chart itself have the verse from the "Tree of Life", has only a
portion of the alphabet on it - with a pineapple between the "a" and
"b" and has a tree at the bottom. I have acquired the kit for this
and plan to do it very soon. It will be a memorial for my mother
whose life was taken in her prime by this dreaded disease. It will be
donated to the cancer clinic that treated her.

Do you by any chance subscribe to For the Love of Cross Stitch from
Leisure Arts? There was a very small photo (maybe about 2" high) of the
completed sampler in Plum on the Letters page of the January 1996 issue;
also, Just CrossStitch October 1996 has the same photo on page 6 along
with an article by the editor about the piece. Even tho the photo is
small, at least it gives you an idea of the overall look of the sampler.
The Just CrossStitch article also says that "when the current design is
retired, Lois plans to offer another chart to benefit breast-cancer
research." So maybe there will be a 1997sampler to look forward to as
well.

Also, Lois plans on selling her own designs starting 1 Jan 97. She felt
it would interfer with the sale of OUAL and she didn't want that. We
look forward to her new designs in 97.
