Well, hi. Mostly we don't do advertising on this list -- we have a
companion group, rec.crafts.textiles.marketplace, for that. However,
since you've turned up here I'd like to ask you a question that I
think will be of general interest to the group.
I've had the opportunity to visit the Shepherd's Bush store a few
times and have really admired your work. However, I've been told you
don't use acid-free mats, and it seems to be generally accepted that
that's dangerous to the long-term survival of needlework mounted that
way. So my (multi-part) question is:
Is it true you don't use acid-free mats?
If you don't, why not? Don't you feel it's important, or is
there an artistic or cost factor involved?
Are you able to use them if the buyer desires it? If so, does
that limit the design options?
Thanks very much in advance for your reply,
Chris
A note of caution here: I know you personally have been to Shepherd's Bush
in Ogden, and I have not. The post to which you replied was from Dave and
Maggie Rees. You may be correct in your assumption as to the identity of
the framer for models in the shop, but then again, you may not!
The framer who is named repeatedly in the SB charts/kits and whose work is
shown in the cover photos is Jill Rensel. See for example, the directions
and photo for Saint Peter's Fair. Jill also does the painted mats for the
shop-only kits such as Buzz-Buzz Bee, Watercolor Heart, and Merry Day.
I've spoken to Jill herself on the phone and she confirmed to me that she
does not use acid-free mats.
A possible interpretation of the Rees' self-serving, quasi-advertising
post would be *only* that they have framed many Shepherd's Bush designs.
As a matter of fact, that is exactly what their post says--the Rees' do
not claim to have framed any models that are hanging in the Ogden SB shop.
Caveat Emptor!

The number number reason why we don't use acid-free matts for all the
Shepherd's Bush pieces, acid-free matts are twice as much as regular matts,
and it seems to be that cost is the number one factor. We do offer acid-free
matts, and the framing industry highly recommends acid-free matting. Our
clients have the option on regular matting and acid-free matting. We carry
four different matt companies: Crescent, TrueVue Miller, Bainbrige and
Archive, which all offer regular and acid-free matts. We totally recommend
acid-free matting for longevity of the piece, as well as UV protection glass,
for those who choose to use glass on their pieces. If you have any questions
on framing and any other concepts, please let us know. I hope this answers
your question.
Sincerely,
Dave and Maggie Rees
If you are interested in having your shepherd's bush piece framed, we strongly
recommend Jill Rensel, she does beautiful work! We thank you again and
welcome your comments!
