Eileen,
Cross Stitch & Country Crafts magazine had a series called By the Sea in
their magazine a few years back (1989 I think) There are three charts in
the series that depict kids playing on the beach. The kids remind me of
the Sunbonnet Sue quilt pattern blocks, they have on hats and you can't see
their faces. All three scenes are really charming. In one, two boys in
bloomers & shirts with sailor collars are playing with a sailboat in the
water. In the second, there are two barefoot girls in pinafores building a
sand castle. In the third, there s a boy and girl, dressed like the others
in the series, picking up seashells.
I stitched the first one in the series and it turned out just gorgeous.
The shading and detail is wonderful though it is a small piece. Hanging on
the wall, it looks like an oil painting. I did it on 18 count aida and it
is about 4 1/2 by 5 1/2. Every single square of the cloth has a stitch on
it though and it took a long time for me to do, because you have to change
colors a lot and there are several blended needle colors. It was well
worth it though.
I don't know if those charts are still available from CC&CF. A lot of
charts that they have published in the magazine have been later published
in leaflet form. They have a toll free number (1-800-437-5566). I quit
getting this magazine in 1994 so I don't know if that is still the current
info.
The pattern is called Avocet. The chart features an avocet, a small
oceanside bird, walking on the shore. Two other charts are advertised
called Seaside Dunes and can be ordered from the Stitchery.

Hi Eileen,
I noticed that Jeanette Crews Designs has a new "Omnibook" out. "The
Omnibook of the Shore". All the designs in the Omnibooks are on the
small-medium side. Mine's on order from Weaver's Needle and Frame...
HTH,
Marilyn
Here's another vote for the Omnibook of the Shore that Marilyn
mentioned. I think the Omnibooks are wonderful, full of nice patterns.
Cross My Heart also has a beautiful book of that has some lighthouses in
it. What sticks in my head is that it is called Seascapes but I'm not
sure if that's right. I didn't see it on their website (
http://www.stitching.com/xmyheart/ ) but I have it at home and its not
very old.
