Dream Lover is done, Done DONE! I believe I started it last June, so
it's been a long-time constant companion and I've enjoyed every minute!
It's gorgeous, if I do say so myself! :))))) The best picture

Joan -
Dream Lover is *stunning*!! And what a compliment to the designer that
you enjoyed every minute of it.

Your new project is quite a contrast! Variety is the spice of life, right?

I'm hoping to work another of his very soon. DL and the next one will
be for the doors of the stitching cabinet my dad built for me, which I
still have to stain and varnish.

> Your new project is quite a contrast! Variety is the spice of life, right?

Definitely! I've discovered I really like going from one extreme to
the other. After stitching something a little more complex like DL,
it's nice to be able to do something that doesn't require quite as much
thought/concentration!

gorgeous as the model. Aren't Marc's purples just incredible???

I'm putting the final backstitches in his "Daffodils" chart tonite. Depending
upon how you're doing the cabinet... the size would match DL. It's 197x297
and beautiful yellow/golds.

*It's a picture of *IRISES*!!!* Fancy that! I thought it was going to be a
picture of a romantic interlude! I admire the dedication required to complete it
(well done, Joan!!! DS thinks it's *wonderful*!), but irises aren't my
favourites... it's the pu-pu-purple!

Poor DS! He has a 'thing' for irises and plants them in my garden on purpose,
just to tick me off! As if to rub salt into the wound, he got pu-pu-purple
hyacinths and added those to the mix, along with some almost-orange daffodils!
Hnnnnnnhhhhh!!! Next thing, I bet he'll crop up with a bevy of jonquils (to
which I'm hopelessly and irrevocably allergic - K'choo!!!!)

Thing is, Joan, the chart looks humungous: is it? I'd consider getting it for
DS, only if it's too big it might prove too daunting for him. I finally
persuaded him to retire the Goddessy Lady for a while and he's been happily
beading on a pair of little Mill Hill Samplers.

Speakin' of which: does anyone know where you can get those? Our LNS shop looked
at me as if I'd grown an extra nose when I said 'beaded samplers'! They tried to
convince me to buy a Just Nan that had a handful of pearl seed beads attached!
That's not what I want: I want a sampler (such as those put out by Mill Hill)
consisting almost entirely of beads! DS is really keen on beading (since that
person, Marilyn-the-Toad, got me hooked on them!) and will be finished his
samplers soon. I'd like to have another selection ready for him, since he's so
keen.

Anyway, if you know of an online place that carries them, please let me know!

NB. Silly boring story for you.

As I said earlier, I've been dying of asthma the past few days: world spinning,
inability to concentrate, sleepy all the time, stuff like that there. From the
medicine.

Anyway, I got a bit clever this morning and thought to make a hearty dinner for
tomorrow night, ready for a cold evening with DS coming home from work and DD
from her Scouts meeting. Stew: Carrots; Celery; Potatoes; Steak. Easy peasy to
just heat it up ready for the crew to mop up with dumplings.

First thing I did was use the wrong packet of steak out of the freezer. Do not
*ever* make stew out of rump steak! It goes like *rubber*!!! Second thing was
using the new potatoes instead of the old: more rubber! Third thing: forgot to
set the timer and fell asleep on the sofa. The dumplings, I think, would sell
well at Wimbledon! They even appeared to have a greenish, sort of suede cast to
them as I fed them to the dog... who ran away in fright!

I dunno! 'snot my fault!!!

Well, I got even *more* creative on the heels of that! Let me back up a bit and
say that I have a bijou soft-spottette for sweetened condensed milk. (NB. If you
buy sweetened condensed *skim* milk, it's *slimming*, honest!!!) Well, there was
a can in the pantry calling my name: 'Trishaaaaaa!' it whispered: eat
meeeeeeeeee'

And so I did. Of course!

While I was slurping and tasting and inhaling the lovely stuff off my shov - er
- spoon, I noticed a recipe for a 'lemon sponge slice' on the label. 'Right!' I
thought, 'I'm gonna make that!' So I asked (only a little bit shamefacedly) DH
to run down the Plaza and get me another full tin of 'dense milk. While he was
gone, I chucked the empty tin in the garbage and tidied up the kitchen. By the
time DH had got home, I realised I'd thrown out the ever-important tin with The
Recipe on it and went to nose-dive into the wheelie bin. No luck. DS had been
mowing and chucked in half an acre's worth of lawn clippings! I wasn't filtering
through all that lot, just for a recipe!

Not a problem, though! The new tin had an even *more* alluring recipe on it!
Wholemeal Date Muffins! Yess! I would make those!

I assembled all the ingredients (see recipe at end) and doubled them to make a
large batch (by the time DS takes some to work and DD takes some to school and
Mum has some and DH buries his snout in the rest, there won't be much change
from two dozen!). DH arrived home with the second tin and I got him to read me
the ingredients (I never did get that prescription for a new pair of
respectacles and so I canardly see to read fine print). DH was not aware that I
was doubling everything, so the concoction I concocted was all out of whack! I
had to stop and write down what I had actually put into the bowl (DH laughed
most cruelly!) and then work out what I needed to add to make a properly
proportioned mixture (remember: all this was done through the phog of my asthma
medicine, which makes me mind go like a glob of phairy phloss at the best of
times!)

The nett result was that I needed a*nother* tin of dense milk and Mr Smarty Emu
Kim-bum-blodgett had to go and get it (since I had me nightie on and was not
properly dressed to attend the Plaze in the middle of the afternoon). On the
way, he picked up DD from school, stopped to yarn with his friend, Emmanuel, and
dropped in at the library to see if my copy of 'Master and Commander' had
arrived yet. By the time he got home, all the phizz had gone out of me bicarb
and by association out of *me*! I was Very Dark Indeed!

But I mixed in the second tinful of 'dense milk and the muffins are quite nice.
Not entirely tennis ball texture: perhaps a tad more like those squishy
exercising balls you can get. But adequate. Next time, I'm sure they'll be light
and phluphy and sweet and much nicer...

Anyway, here's the recipe I used. You might like to try it?

Wholemeal Date Muffins

125gms (2oz) pitted dates, roughly chopped
1 tsp bicarb soda
1 cup of hot water
400gm (6oz) tin sweetened condensed *skim* milk (remember: it's slimming!)
1/4 cup oil
1 egg, lightly beaten
1 and a half cups wholemeal plain flour
1 cup plain flour
1 tsp cinnamon

1. Preheat oven to 180C.
2. Place dates and bicarb in large bowl with hot water (do not be afraid: the
phizz is on purpose!) Cool.
3. Add the 'dense milk and oil, stirring in the egg until well-combined.
4. Sift in the flours and cinnamon, mix and then spoon into greased muffin tin.
(Makes 12).
5. Bake 20 mins or until cooked.

Hm. Can't remember at the moment if I did it on 28 or 32 count!
Either way, it's over 2, so is pretty close to the 10 1/2 by 17 1/2 it
shows on the site.
Yes, it's gorgeous and I can hardly wait to see what it looks like
after it's been washed and ironed. It will look even better! :)
Even this site doesn't have the true colors--they're much more vivid,
especially the greens.
I really had a tough time picking out which of the Silver Lining
designs to buy--they're all so gorgeous! I've got one of his pansy
designs, too, but it's much smaller and a horizontal design.
Thanks for all the compliments, everyone. The real thanks goes to
Marc, though, for his beautiful designs! :)

No romantic interludes on my stitching cabinet!!! They only belong the
the bedroom! LOL! Now, should I tell you that I'm thinking of painting
the room my cabinet is going into a lovely shade of light lavendar???
<r&d> ;)
You do know, my Dear Trish, that irises come in many colors other than
purple, don't you? Yellows and pinks and bronzes and oranges and blues!
I have some that are a very pale shade of yellow, with No Purple
atall. Here are a few pictures:

The hyacinths blooming in my garden right now are white and pink, with
more coming (not sure what colors). I had to go outside and smell them
last night! :) Some of my tulips are just starting to bloom, too. I
planted a whole bunch last year and I don't even bemember which colors,
so I'll be surprised as they show themselves!
I'm hoping to plant my sweet peas outside tonight, especially the ones
that are about 8 inches tall and trying to attach themselves to DS's
window screen! This will be my first attempt with them and I hope they
go crazy!!! :) I can hardly wait for their heavenly perfume!

> Thing is, Joan, the chart looks humungous: is it? I'd consider getting it for

Yes, it's quite large--8 pages! The finished size is roughly 10 1/2 by
17 1/2, done over two on 28 ct. It could be done on aida, since there
are no partial stitches in it at all, although IMO it's too, too
beautiful for aida!
I just had a brainstorm! Maybe he could stich just a single flower!
The top flower is about, oh, probably 4 inches square.

There *are* no 'lovely' shades of light lavender, Joan, dear.
It's all nasty colours of pu-pu-purple!

Bah! Humbug! Don't like yellow or orange ones either. The thing about irises is
that they remind me of elderly ladies wearing pince nez respectacles and
smelling of (as you say) lavender water. They usually have damp noses (and
hence, lavender-smelling handkerchiefs) and they *kiss* you incessantly and
wetly!

Can you tell there were a number of such ladies in my childhood? One of them was
actually *called* 'Iris' and I think that's why I retain my deep and abiding
dislike of the flowers. I can't *begin* to understand why DS likes them so much!

That sounds lovely! See, I'm not entirely awful! It's just irises and daffodils
that frost my pumpkin (Nina, 2000).

Oh! Best of luck! I've failed to grow my sweet peas for the last few years and
have finally given up! The hot spring winds have turned them into tea-leaves
just once too often and so DS and I have agreed to forget about trying for now.
I *love* SPs in the house and have fond memories of taking humungo-bunches to
school for my teachers. Gee, I wonder if kids still do that?

> I just had a brainstorm! Maybe he could stich just a single flower!
> The top flower is about, oh, probably 4 inches square.

Great idea! I know one of our LNSes has Silver Lining charts - will have a look
next time I'm in town! Sadly, our dear little local one has given itself over to
the Dark Side and sold out most of its XS stuff in favour of scrapbooking. I
haven't got anything against scrapbooking per se (not my personal cup of tea,
though I've seen some pretty great renditions of the craft), but it's a shame to
see XS being deleted from a nice little shop! Wouldn't you think both could
exist together in harmony?

> Hm. The lemon slice sounds better than the muffins. I think *I* would

LOL! Our wizzbin (that's what they're called - honest!) is about four foot tall,
two foot square and mounted on large wheels. I've only ever dived into it the
once and the experience was so awful that *no* tempting 'dense milk recipe would
incite me to do it again! Occasionally, DS or DD will do a dive for me if it's
*absolutely* necessary... but I love them too much to ask very often. The
statement: 'it's going in the wizzy' is a Very Final One!

If I ever see a tin of 'dense milk with the lemon slice recipe on it, I will buy
it and send you the recipe! Promise! ;-D

No: luckily, the next tin had the wholemeal muffin one (or I'd be serially
baking all this week! LOL!). I've decided I don't like the muffin recipe (too
expensive and too dangerous with all that 'dense milk floating around) I'm on

Start them in the fall, so they're blooming in late winter and early
spring, before it gets too hot. That's what we have to do with most
varieties here in SoCal.

This doesn't address the Mill Hill Beaded Samplers, but have you considered

While I think the MH things are very pretty, you don't get a lot of bang for

Yeah, I have. Mostly strawberries and violet patterns. It's fun working a XS
design in beads on waste canvas to decorate clothing. Babies love feeling them,
for some reason! LOL!

See, DS really likes the little sampler-kitty-jobbies. He loves the linen band
they come on and enjoys the finishing and tarting-up at the end. I like to get
them for him, too. His needs are precious few so I don't mind.

Oh, speakin' of which, I saw 'Eragon' in the shop the other day and bought it
for him (DS, that is). He's *wrapped* and can't wait to read it. DS is a slow
reader, though, and has two other novels to finish first. Perish the thought he
might advance 'Eragon' to the head of the pile! That would be too challenging
indeed! Thanks to all of you who suggested it! I wouldn't have picked it up,
only I know a lot of you were pleased with it. I guess I might read it while
he's not looking...

More her loss than ours. Why must we constantly mourn her more than
any of the others who have left here of their own volition? This
group has lost much with the defection of Kathy Dyer, Christina and
the spate of designers who used to feel that they could post and get
valuable feedback from this group.

Why be so unkind? Be happy that some do post, and we can miss those who
don't. Not everyone likes the same person, but we do have the option of
skipping the disliked one's posts.

I think designers et al, new ones, are still looking to us for feedback, and
they will continue to do so unless we run them off with a hostile
atmosphere. Maybe we should all live for the present and the future, and not
dwell in the past.

The whole thing is silly. Jim seems unable to recognize that
probably his post, which sermonized, at the time Trish did repost at
rctn, did more to raise dust than any other single thing. I am
referring to last time round, not this time, although this time was no
less pompous.

So Miss Florida - we shall see you next month now I guess. I am at
two weeks to moving day but shall be installed by June and looking
forward to you coming to visit. Sharon from NB is coming down to
stay with me so she does not miss any festivities. I will be in
touch with Mavia and Ruby, trust us, we'll all be there! I am
counting on the fact that you are visiting us, not looking to see if I
am unpacked and organized lol

Caryn, that is excellent advice except that it is based on a false
premise. Much of what Mirjam posts irritates me, but not everything.
Sometimes I enjoy her posts. Often I ignore her. Sometimes it suits me
to spar with her, and then I do. I do find it interesting that you
thought to post that advice to me, but did not give the same advice to
Mirjam as regards to her interactions with Sheena. Perhaps it is you
who needs to killfile me.

Well, to be honest.....

I have Mirjam killfiled, therefore I didn't see what she said to Sheena, other
than what you quoted.

I also thought that you were open-minded and intelligent enough to see my
advice as I intended. A hopefully helpful suggestion, rather than a personal
attack.

I didn't take offense when Roberta suggested I killfile Sunflower, I saw her
point.

I only repeated her advice to me to you in that spirit.

If you are unable to see it as such, that's a shame, but that's your choice.

People leave - others come, and there`s bound to be change over the years,
as in life. No-one is indispensible and we never know who`s going to drop in
and prove to be a treasure.

SOME designers, don`t forget, make it quite obvious that this is a good
place to constantly advertise their wares, however surreptitiously. Most
have their own websites and chatrooms as well, so anyone feeling deprived of
info from their favourite designer can just as easily find (and give)
feedback on those.

I`m far more impressed by the unsolicited opinions on new designs etc.,
given on here by we ordinary mortals and stitchers.

Pat,

Clearly you are amused by it all, and I have never once thought of suggesting
you killfile MJ.

Others, however, seem to let her get them truly angry, and that isn't amusing
to anybody.

I did follow Roberta's advice, I did killfile Sunflower, because her
childishness did tend to bring out the worst reactions from me.

I am sure most people will agree there was nothing amusing about it, and I
think that the exchanges between MJ and Dr Brat have reached the same level.

I have seen the light, actually.

I've killfiled right and left lately, just to force myself not to let certain
people bug the living crap outta me. And in turn, keep me from bugging the
crap out of others.

I'm not insisting people follow Roberta's advice, just suggesting they consider
it.

If my own previously bad example can be used as a lesson to others, than by all
means let them learn from it.

OK, Lucretia, my friend,

MIL!!! I want her to agree to see her Dr for a check-up, so that we know she
should be OK to leave. It sounds very mercenary, but if we cancel prior to
the trip, we get almost all the $5000 back. id something happens, and all
the campgrounds, ferries, events, meals etc are cancelled, we get zilch. Not
forgetting the $1.70 a gallon for every 10 miles on the way up. I have
chickened out of approaching her, but tomorrow I will ( maybe). If this
looks weird it is typed with one eye. As far as I know the surgery went

Well I see nothing wrong with being practical ! Why not, can't see
blowing $5,000 just like that!

Hope your eye is 100 % better tomorrow, it is truly a miraculous op.
My oldest aunt had one of the original ops, maybe as far back as early
60s and it was no joke then. She had to lie for six weeks on her
back with sandbags either side of her head so she would not disturb
the implanted lens. They've come a long way.

For some reason I thought you were here in June, have noted the date
now. Would you like me to send you a brand new map ? I do have two
or three in the car. Anything else you would like to know etc ?
You can manage sans francaise, most French in the maritimes runs a bit
like "backez-vous the car dans la drive" - except in the case of the
Acadians who speak a most attractive French, far nicer to my ear
anyway than the Quebec French.

Let me know if I can help with anything.

Hope your eye settles down quickly.

It's a local one, about 90% men with a predilection for posting blonde
jokes. I fumed for awhile then posted a blonde joke with all the
names altered to male ones. Haven't seen anymore of those!

Sometimes I get the impression that if they are having a fight with
their wives, or just feel pissy, they get on the group and decide to
harangue the 10% of women.

Some of us meet at the pub every two months which is great fun. We
notice the ones who are exceptionally nasty never show up. It's just
the usual lesson of participating but not letting it get under your
skin. We still disagree on most things when we meet at the pub, but
remain good friends.

That's hardly an attitude that is going to foster reading books. I
would be hoping that a book group would love to discuss any book, not
just certain genre's. Are you sure there is not another one,

Why did you bring this up again? This has been dead for a week, at
least, and I didn't respond to Jim in the first place (he replied to me)
because I was afraid people would start ranting about this again. It's
just silly to make a fuss over it.

If it is your praternal home city, why can't you spell it right? It's
Brussel or Brussels or Bruxelles. And as I said before, I hadn't

I think that if you think about your last few posts to me, you'll see

That`s what I mean by ordinary mortals, Dianne! LOL!
It`s the others who are different!!!

How's John?

John`s SOOoo much better, thankyou for asking - it`s incredible. He`s been
very lucky. His sister and I didn`t think he`s pull through, let alone get
SO much better.

When I think that this time last month he was in the High Dependency unit on
oxygen, heart monitors, drips, etc., we can`t believe that he`s now back
walking the dogs (the first time since November) In fact I rhink he`s better
than he has been for a good year - we didn`t notice it creeping up on him.

Even so, when I don`t feel up to going with him (I have a bad back at
present) I make him take one of our little two-way radios with him. We`ve
just decided that they are a good thing to have with us even when just
shopping as sometimes he has trouble parking while I go off on my own and we
often have trouble catching each other!!!

What? No cell phones? <big grin>
I was in the post office the other day, and some man was talking to his
father. It was such a personal phone call. Everyone in line (maybe 5
other people including clerk) was stone silent. As soon as he said
good-bye ("Love you, too, Dad."), conversation just picked up where it
left off. It was as if everyone breathed a sigh of relief and then went
on about their business.

You might want to reread your own posts to me, and see why I might have been on

Mobile phones are a real menace in public places though, aren`t they? It
really annoys me to see and hear people holding loud conversations in
public. We really only have ours as a safety thing in the car. I rarely
have it switched on unless we`re travelling and know that someone might want
to reach us.

The people going around supermarkets discussing what to have for tea baffles

But I am intimately acquainted with that city and knew that it had three
spellings.

The variant you use appears to be quite recent and I could not find an
explanation for it. Do you have one?

While I obviously stand corrected on this issue, Lucille, I would like
to point out that the fact that some websites use that spelling does not
at all make it correct. Lot of incorrect information appears on websites.

We don`t all seem to receive our posts as quickly as others, so I don`t see

One explanation is the increasing number of Multylingual societies ,,,

i saw 4 kids on the bus ,, speaking English , one left 3 turned to
French, 2nd left , the 2 started to talk Flemish ..., The other
explanation , is A group of people who work on all this spelling
`variants` as you call them ... part of whom i am very well aquainted
with. Thus i am quite informed about that.
