Hi all,

I've decided to paint my kitchen and I once saw something I would like to try.
They had painted the words Eat, Drink and Be Merry..... all along the top of
the wall near the ceiling. They used old script (like Henry VIII) and I
believe it was traced and then painted free hand (as opposed to stenciling).
Where would I get a template like this? I've searched through my alphabet books
and tried to find a place on line, but haven't had any luck. Also, I'm
wondering if there is actually more to that saying that I could use or should I
repeat it over and over again? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks you guys are the best,

Lori

"Eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow you may die". I'm not sure if
that's the exact quote but I don't think I'd want to eat in any
kitchen that had that quotation painted on the walls ;-).

If you have a word processor on your computer - use "Cloisterblack" font -
and enlarge it to the size you want. Otherwise you should be able to get
the font from a fonts disk. Failing that ask someone else with it to send
you the font - I have it if you can`t fid it.

Sorry, I can't help in finding a source, but I have seen the quote morphed into
"Eat, Drink and Be Merry, For Tomorrow We May Diet".

"Eat, Drink and be Merry - for tomorrow we die!"

Perhaps not very suitable!!! - The change to "diet" would be MUCH more
cheerful!!!

Ellen,
Eat, Drink and be Merry for tomorrow we may die. The sentiment has
associations with the night before a battle. Just not usually the
battle of the [waist] bulge.
Happy painting,

Hi there !
Actually wasn't the gladiators in ancient Rome who said eat, drink and be
merry ...?
Probably, not, but I imagine they thought it enough times !
To get back to the original question... I would think something like the
names of beloved foods and maybe a few designs would be more positive and
attractive than either saying ... Pasta, Tomatoes, Soups, Pizza, Vegetables,
Rice, Herbs, Spices, Sauces... I would look for either stencils or those
handsome sponges everyone is selling lately. I have not seen any for the
alphabet but I have not looked, either ! For designs what about Cherries,
peaches and berries, grains, and flowers ?? OR Herbs - the pleasant greens
of herbs in a kitchen is appealing. I would not repeat any word more than
twice, there are lots of words that pertain to kitchen work... heavens, just
all the names of spices would fill a wall, I am sure !
I may be a plump Italian Matron, but I am not going to remind myself to diet
every time I walk into MY kitchen. I can't think of any thing that will put
a guest off more than the word <Diet> when I am serving Quiche, wine and
salad ! (OR pasta, wine and garlic bread !)
It matters what colors you like most. I made a big mistake when I moved in
here by deciding on a bright gold that was really yellow for my kitchen, it
took me 15 years to live THAT down, now, I have pinks and greens which cheer
me to no end ! The other color combination I find very appealing is blue and
white like Spong (spelling??) ware.. a friend is considering that
combination. VERY handsome !!!
As for the actual work .. .I would look for instructions at the local
bookstore... I've seen plenty of books that have to do with painting and
stenciling walls - there is an English woman who has a show on PBS - she had
a project on her show, not unlike the one you are considering, the technical
aspects are chiefly measuring and taking your time and being careful. Look
for her book <sorry I don't know her name>
Kathy Mary - Good luck !!!!!!

I did this in my kitchen when I first moved in. My DH and I are vegetarians
so I did a border all around the kitchen and dining room of all of our favorite
veges. The way I did it was using the clip art in our publishing program on the
computer. I selected the design I wanted, enlarged it, then traced the outline
onto the wall. After that point the painting is easy. It looked so cool. Since
then I changed my mind and redecorated the kitchen and did a blue and white
border like what you see on those old Currier and Ives dishes. Deb Wise

This group never ceases to amaze me!

I've been really into Christoper Lowell lately...I watch his show thrice a
day <blushing>.

BTW--this brings up the subject that our home in So.CA is in escrow now (BIG
MAJOR happy dance). Unfortunatley we just resigned our lease here, so we're
stuck until next June. sigh

I have a landlord from H***. He finally agreed after 3 years to let me
repaint the Pepto-Bismol living room...said something like "but *why* would
you want to change these lovely colors?" This house still has the original
1970's linolium <sp> in the kitchen and foyer. I've asked if I paid for the
suppllies and labor if I caould replace this. Answer is always..."never!
It looks so nice the way it is." The master bath was purple and the master
br an acceptable green..sort of sage color. Other rooms are yellow (bright)
and blue (sky). Yuck!!! Since we moved here I have not
entertained....except in the backyard.

When we moved here I left most of my furniture in CA (I was a ASID certified
Interior Designer and had a beautiful home!). Here, we've been happy to
have 4 chairs to sit on and a bed for each of us to sleep on. That explains
my budget! LOL!

What I have found is that a little bit of paint can do *amazing* things!
When I finally got permission I went nuts! I painted walls, stenciled and
ragged walls. I painted and I painted! Now if I could just get my Landlord
to let me paint the floors <LOL>.

A little bit of fabric and wood goes a long way too. Imagination is the key
to making a home look wonderful. Don't know if my landlord will appreciate
the trompe loil, but it sure makes me a whole lot happier. And he *did* say
I could paint!
