Fabric Cleaning-Spots!!

My daughter placed a few cross stitch pieces in the basement, which is
dry. Recently she moved to an apartment and wanted to use the piece I had
made for her when she was younger. There are light brown spots- front and
back on one piece, just one place on the front on another. I don't think
it is mildew (isn't that black??). I have been soaking in Ivory dish
detergent and water all day. The spots are lighter, but still there. Any
ideas??
