Mine`s the annual New Year`s concert by the Vienna Philharmonic! Wonderful
and uplifting! It reminds me of when we went to a Royal Marine`s concert
when our son was in the band playing French Horn. Knowing that we were
coming, he got the "boss" to play John`s two favourite marches "Holyrood",
the Strauss "Radetski".

I think my favorite thing at New Year is the feeling of having a fresh start, a
clean slate.

Ah those RM bands. Met my husband when the RM's were doing sunset and I had a
bit of a laugh because the short fat Marine had the big drum and the tall thin
one had a triangle. Seriously though, they make the best music. I lived in
the married quarters at Eastney and they used to practice on the playing fields
right behind my house. Sent my son to his room for some misdemeanour and when
I couldn't think why he was making no effort to come back down, found he was
watching the RM's rehearsing for their motorbike pyramids for the big show in
London. Light years away now! Sheena

I like to succeed at replacing the calendars before the others in the
household and the office give me 20 lashes with a wet noodle for not
realizing the year changed. Escaping looking like a bloody fool is always
satisfying. (Of course, last year they caught me doing this on Dec.31 to
get ready, and I got criticised for that!)

It`s bad luck to change the calendar before the correct date! Now I expect
the bluebird will fly over your head - etc. - all year.

Watching the Tournament of Roses Parade. Every visible inch of the floats
must be covered in organic material.....flowers, petals, seeds, nuts,
fibers, leaves, bark, spices, you name it it's on a float. So much
imagination, artistic talent, and work goes into it every year. It's
absolutely gorgeous!

He didn`t pick it, Linda - he passed his audition as a trumpeter when he was
16! They needed a French Horn Player, so that`s what he accepted - and
loved it! In fact he was the French Horn Instructor for the Royal Marines
School of Music just before he came out. He dropped it for a while,
settling into the Police, and going through a divorce, but he`s had a couple
of bands "head-hunting" him recently, so he`s going to take it up again (in
his spare time). They do pretty well to get in the R.M.S.M. - that year they
had 2,500 applicants, and only took 45 of them - and half of those either
dropped out or were rejected after a while. Some of them didn`t realise
that they were expected to be Royal marines first and Musicians second! In
those days they had to the whole Commando training too.

When we went to his Passing Out parade, he was the only one in the PT.
demonstration in a PINK PT kit! He`d put thm in the washing machine with
his red rugby shirt the night before! Boy, did he hear about it!!!

Richard certainly agrees with you about it being the best instrument. it has
such a terrific range, doesn`t it?

Yes, it certainly does!!!!! My sister used to be the First Horn in the
Coast Guard Band, now she teaches. Her hubby is still a Hornist with
the band. LOL Then, I have two trumpet playing brothers as well. In
fact, my younger brother was lead trumpet in the Air Force Airmen of
Note Jazz Band. He just left the band last year to pursue other
interests and still plays gigs on the side. LOL We have it all
through the family. And, like your son, trumpet was my first instrument
as well. Now, I just stick with piano and organ. But, my daughter
wants to learn the French Horn!!!!! LOL
