Heather delurking reminded me that it's been a while since we did any formal
introductions!

I'm Karen, originally from Long Island, New York, but now in California. I'm
42, divorced, two cats, and a sweetie who goes to law school full-time.

I was a legal secretary/paralegal for roughly 20 years, but have been off work
about a year with a relapse of CFS (or M.E. for those of you in the UK). I'm
at the point where I can do a little work, so I've started my own
writing/researching/editing business; I overdid that last week and have been in
bed most of the day ever since. I'm learning! I've been a professional
writer/journalist since 1974, so I do have plenty of credentials for my current
endeavor. In that guise, I'm collaborating with Nathalie on Craft-Searcher.com
as head writer, and proofreader of what Nat writes ... if you haven't visited
yet, I hope you'll have a look and e-mail one of us with any comments or
complaints!

I do most kinds of needlework. Counted cross-stitch was the only useful thing
I learned in college.

I also enjoy chocolate, bubble baths, reading, music, baseball, ice skating,
politics ... my TV is generally on either CNN or HGTV; about the only two
network shows I watch any more are Frasier and Will&Grace.

Hi Everyone! I'm Susan, a self-proclaimed lurker. I used to
visit R.C.T.N. quite regularly, but stopped coming about a year
ago. It's been rather sporadic since then, but I hope to return
on a more regular basis.

Originally from Knoxville, TN., I'm 37 & single with no dependants
(not even a pet, although I love dogs!).

I'm a registered nurse in the operating room of a major medical center
here & I've been there for the past 14 & 1/2 years. I love to travel,
surf the net, read books, & I even like to do a little fictional writing of
my own. I am a certified scuba-diver & my father is teaching me to fly
an airplane. I also like music, & love to treat myself to a bubble bath
once in a while (candles, classical music, the whole 9 yards <g>).

I was introduced to cross-stitching by an 8th grade home-economics
teacher who was looking for something for all of us to do at the end
of the year that wouldn't take much time. Needless to say, from that
moment on, I was hooked! I still have the first cross-stitch book I ever
bought (it is an excellent Christmas book). I've got more stash than I'll
ever hope to stitch, but I still have to go to my LNS & look through all
the new things ( I can't help myself- it's an addiction, I tell you! <g>).

My last finished project- 12/20/00- Cameron's First Christmas Ornament.

Have a great day all!

Karen C - California had some very interesting things to say about
"Time for a Round of Who Are We":

>Heather delurking reminded me that it's been a while since we did any formal
>introductions!

OK, I'll play. :-)

I'm Seanette, originally from the Oregon coast, now living in Lompoc,
California. I'm 31, married, no children, one cat. DH is a computer
programmer, I'm a homemaker.

Needlework: crochet, cross-stitch, needlepoint [yes, including plastic
canvas :-)], and just resuming knitting [my beginner knitting project,
dubbed The Infamous Scarf, is coming along nicely :-)].

Other interests: reading, online social life, the cat :-), walks,
shopping [gotta watch that, though, or so says the checkbook :-)].

TV likes [not many]: X-Files, Malcolm in the Middle, Dharma & Greg,
CSI. I *loathe* "reality shows" such as Survivor, etc., and generally
don't have very much interest in TV, except for the above-mentioned
shows.

Movies: I tend to go for comedies, science fiction/fantasy, or
suspense/horror. I *hate* "chick flick" type movies as a generality,
and don't much care for the action genre or ultra-serious drama. Some
musicals work well for me, especially as background while doing
needlework, others don't.

Music: just about anything, except rap, alternative, or hard
rock/metal.

Reading matter: religious, humor, self-improvement, science
fiction/fantasy, horror, true crime.

Well, call me rude! LOL. I just dove in on some of the posts without
so much as a 'by your leave' or a 'Hi how are ya'!

I am celebrating the 29th anniversary of my 29th birthday today, and
gave up dyeing the grey hair when it became apparent I would soon start
needing VATS of the stuff.

Two years ago the DH and I sold our business, house, the contents,
EVERYTHING and took off to see some of the world. Kind of got tired of
traveling when we hit central Mexico, so decided to settle down for a
while here. We live in the central highlands (the mountains) in an old
colonial city, and the weather is very dry most of the year, and the
temps are spring-like year round. When you tell me your snow stories,
I try to look sympathetic and not smug.

I have 4 daughters, 6 grandkids, all in New Jersey, USA. I go back
twice a year for a month each time to visit. A month is long enough to
nag without actually getting thrown out of the house. Any longer than
that and they start looking up flight schedules.

I sew, quilt, xstitch, refurnish furniture and do house remodeling on a
minor scale. I used to crochet a lot, but it's too warm here to have a
lap full of yarn anymore, and I am not interested in the crocheted
tablecloth, etc. Let's face it, I'm not interested in tablecloths at
all. Give me the simple life. LOL

I practice Hatha Yoga and run about 4 miles 4 times a week. I have
elevated nagging the DH to an art form. We have an AD (Annoying Dog)
and an AP (Annoying Parrot). Everyone in this house is totally
spoiled, even me.

Love this forum, great place. Marti in Mexico

Another Karen - only this one is on the East Coast in North Carolina!

I'm Karen too, originally from a small town named Creedmoor and I actually
live approximately 3 miles from where I grew up. Not many natives left in
this area - we're about 16 miles north of Raleigh, NC's capital. I'm 44,
married to a wonderful, supportive DH (an example of how wonderful - for
Christmas, I received a complete collection of Anchor floss), four very
spoiled cats, and a daughter who lives three hours away at the beach
(Wilmington, NC).

I work for a major telecommunications company (NN) that is going through a
major layoff. I've been homebased for about 6 months after commuting every
day for the past twenty years for 2-1/2 hours a day so I'm hoping I won't be
laid off and can continue to work from home. Working in sweats sure beats
getting dressed up and sitting in traffic every day.

My favorite form of needlework is counted crossstitch but I also crochet and
also manage to knit a dishcloth or two when necessary.

I love chocolate, reading, music, and enjoy HGTV, Animal Planet, or
Discovery and generally don't watch network tv except to check out the local
news..

WIP includes christmas ornaments for 2001, wedding sampler for my daughter -
getting married in Sept. 2001, Pooh bookmarks, baby afghan.

I guess I'm Karen #3! I'm Karen Ford and have been reading (and
occasionally posting) to RCTN for a few weeks. I've lived in Arizona for 21
years (Phoenix for the past 14, Scottsdale before that). I've been married
for 24 years, and we have a SRD (spoiled rotten dog), actually an adorable
cockapoo.

I have been involved in needlework since helping my mother with projects as
a child. She and my Swedish-born grandmother also encouraged me to try all
sorts of needlework, and I did counted cross-stitch long before it was
“discovered” in this country. I started charting designs for ecclesiastical
needlework about twenty-two years ago, when I had difficulty finding them
elsewhere.

I have been in the ecclesiastical needlework business (mostly mail order)
for 20 years. Five years ago my business became a part of English Heritage
Needlework, Inc., to import Tapestry Church Kneeler kits from Jacksons of
Hebden Bridge, England. We are also continuing the line of ecclesiastical
designs formerly carried in my catalogue. (Brief plug here -- you can visit
us at www.english-heritage-needlework.com.) I'm also the "owner" of the
Ecclesiastical Needlework Idea Exchange message board at

Okay....

I'm Kilmeny, a little over a month shy of 35, single, owned by a cat.
(Ferocious Ridiculous Indolence Jones, the Burmese Demon Cat....) I ran
away from home and joined the army when I was 18, and since I haven't
decided what I want to do when I grow up yet, I'm still there. I'm a
computer programmer by education, and communications officer by
training, and am currently working in the computer security end of
things in Winnipeg. Originally from British Columbia, went to Kingston
(Ontario), then Gander Newfoundland (where I saw a TW - "The Castle" and
decided to stitch it.... which is how I got started on cross stitch).
Have been to Alert, NWT twice (when it still was in the NWT, as opposed
to Nunavut), and have also worked in Kingston (Ontario) (again) and
Ottawa. Since the infamous meeting with the TW, I've also taken up
hardanger and canvaswork, and can't seem to convince myself that it's
okay to work on something smaller than an MLI....... Recently corrupted
- er - introduced - my mother to hardanger (she's still at it, and not
saying 'dang' too much....) and my buddy Ruth plus her 3 daughters to
cross stitch. (Ruth is liable to chime in any moment now and take a
shot at me for that... <G>)

Hi,
My name is Robin and I am originally from Erie, PA. I live in Effingham, NH
now with my 55 yr. old DH, George and our 19 month old DD, Allison. I have
been stitching since I was 12 years old and I am now 38 yrs. old. I also
have a 20 year old DD, Janelle and an 18 year old DS, Todd, both of whom
still live in Erie, PA.

I like to read, play with my computer, and mostly x-stitch when I get a free
moment. I have enjoyed rctn since April of 2000 and feel as if I know most
of you pretty well, now! Oh, and I stay at home now, to take care of
Allison, but I used to drive truck with my husband. (He did most of the
driving...I only had my license for a year when I got pregnant with Allison,
so I didn't drive for long!) George has 8 grandchildren...I consider them
mine, too! And he has 3 children from his two previous marriages as well as
2 stepdaughters.

Anyway, now that I've bored you all to tears with my rather mundane life,
I'd like to say that it has been a pleasure meeting everyone!

Hi, I'm Janet. I was brought up in Kittery, Maine, but having fallen in love
with a young visiting Englishman many years ago, I returned with him across the
Atlantic and have been living here in England for 30 years. I have 4
daughters aged 20 to 27 and a son of 17. My eldest had made the return journey
and currently lives in Seattle. I have been taking an evening class in Crafts
for the last 12 years, though it is more like a club than a class. We all do
what projects we want, though our tutor is always on the lookout for new ideas
to teach us. I love cross stitch, but our tutor recently introduced us to
beaded jewellry which I find I also enjoy. I love doing cross stitch pictures
that remind me of holidays and places I have visited.
Besides crafts I have used the internet as a means for some family history
research, and bless e-mails for making it so much easier to keep in touch with
my family in the US.

I've been skipping out on these "Who we are" threads for the past year
now. I guess it's finally time to speak up.

I'm Jamie from Spring (near Houston) Texas. I have a BS in Professional
Writing and an MEd in Educational psychology. I'm an adjunct professor
in developmental reading and study skills at a local community college
which is a job I'd probably do even if they didn't pay me. I'm
currently also learning C++ programming and Data Communications and
Networking at the CC because I can't resist the lure of the computer. I
learned to embroider on stamped linens when I was 5 from a grandmother
whose own mother always thought a "lady" needed something to make a
living at if things got rough. (She had raised 9 kids during the
Depression by sewing, quilting and crocheting Irish lace from old
newspaper string.) I've dabbled in needlecrafts ranging from knitting
to stumpwork to bobbin lace to stuffed toys but STILL never made a
garment beyond the terrible apron fiasco of 7th Grade Home Ec. I adore
MLIs and TWs, but have recently had to admit I don't like working cross
stitch pictures and will never finish a single one of them. I'm a
samplerholic, both aesthetically and for sheer stitching enjoyment. (I
just started AND have half-finished DrawnThread's "Cloister Garden" in
one week!)

I'm *mumble* years old. Married with three wonderful children who are
MUCH too old to be mine. I don't have cable and last got control of the
TV when DS was about three, hence my viewing habits are... None;) I
read voraciously, (anything and everything although I have a deep
fondness for humorous fantasy like Piers Anthony (hence the d'Xanth
screen name) and Terry Pratchett. I also love light mysteries like our
own Monica Ferris and Lillian Jackson Braun. I collect needlework
books, charts, threads, fabric, beads, bits of string and shiny stuff,
breadcrumbs and...No... Scratch that last bit. STASH! Yeah! SABLE for
several incarnations!

It's a pleasure to meet y'all!

I have been stitching for over 22 years now and love it more than I did at

working on a Cherished Teddies round robin, Heart In Hand round robin, a
centuries round robin and 2 exchanges. I plan on stitching Americana by Jean

I prefer to watch news type shows on tv or let Mark pick what he wants and
stitch anyway.

Jessica-10, Jami-8(today!), and Michelle-7. I work in an Administrative
position for a distributor for Ford, and my DH works for GPC, or NAPA Auto
parts.

I taught myself to cross stitch when I was pregnant with Jessica, and I've
been stitching ever since. However, it didn't turn into the addiction it is
now, until about 3 years ago. Now I'm just hopeless! LOL
I'm now designing my own patterns, and I'm working on selling them. (Here's
hoping!)

I watch mostly educational tv, such as documentaries and the History
Channel. However, I do have my weakness on Thursday nights, I watch all NBC
shows from Friends all the way to ER.

I'm relatively new to rctn, I've only been here about 3 weeks, but I hope to
be here for a long time...

Hi All -

I have been here about a week. My name is Lisa, born and raised and
still living in the San Francisco Bay Area. I just turned 36, have a
DD, 6 and a DS, 8, and married 4 years to the sweetest man on earth,
who is about to adopt my, excuse me, our kids. I am fortunate now to be
able to be a SAHM, I was a tech writer before we married.

I learned needlepoint as a kid from my grandmother, put it aside for
about 10 years, and have recently took it back up. I am amaed with how
much things have changed - the variety of fibers available now is
amazing and I am having a ball trying them all out. I have never tried
cross stitch, may need to give that a go one of these days.

I have vowed to complete a Christmas stocking for my family @ 2 a year,
my daughter's has begun and my son's is on order. I have just found a
trunk stuffed with WIPs, gadgets, yarn and floss from long ago. In
addition I have joined a "Night Before Christmas" mini stocking a month
club, a "Merry Christmas" one with a new letter each month, and a Beau
Geste Santa of the Month club, so I have plenty to do these days.

Happy Stitching!

Ok, I'll play, too. My name is Isabel. I was born in Brooklyn NY, but
only lived in NYC till I was 4. I was really raised in small towns in
Upstate New York and New Hampshire. Now I live in Central New York, in
Binghamton, which is 3 hours north of Philadelphia and an hour south of
Syracuse. I turned 30 in June last year.

I had a rough year last year, but it ended on a high note. I got
engaged and am now planning the wedding, which I swear is going to end
up with everyone in jeans and t-shirts just because I can't see myself
in a dress that looks like a pillow with beads. Tom lives with me; he
has one kid we see on the weekends (a sweetie, 10, named Natasha). We
live with Odie Dummy Dog (a husky/chow mix who thinks he's a lapdog),
Stinky the Pots (a black and silver tabby cat who has an unfortunate
gas problem, hence his name), and Fuzzbutt (a gray hairball of a cat
that reminds me of a mop). The animals are an endless source of
amusement and the latest game is Stinky Hockey.

I like all kinds of things, but needlework is one of my favorite ways
to relax. I like cross stitch, hardanger, pulled thread, and learning
new techniques. Right now I'm trying to decide if I should learn
blackwork or ribbon embroidery next. I also like to read, and will
read almost anything. I like all kinds of music except rap and hard
rock. My favorite tv shows are "The Practice", "100 Centre
Street", "Third Watch", "Law and Order", "The West Wing", "ER", "Law
and Order SVU" and "Farscape". I also love The Learning Channel and
The Discovery Channel.

Ok, I guess I've babbled too much, so I'm gonna head out...

I'm Charmander, no wait, make that Sarah, from Clear Lake City, TX. I'm 21,

I've been quilting about 1 1/2 years now, and I've been working on needle lace
for almost a year. I had not been a x-stitcher until I started reading this
group, and now, I have enough charts and patterns to last til Christmas! I've
got 2 sets of redwork going (actually, one's a minty green redwork), and I'm
going to get back to quilting (I have 2 20 gallon totes full of fabric, plus 3
drawers, a box, and a shelf full.) I'm starting bobbin lace, been needle
tatting, and crocheting for a couple of years now. Still trying to get the
knitting down though (I'm hopeless with large pointy needles!)
I live with my parents, and I have an 19 year old sister in college in
Indiana. I have 5 "babies"--3 cats, an oversized Jack Russell mutt dog, and a
pretty black Labradorable. I'm planning on going to graduate school someday
and going into research. Bye!

Hi all,
Now it's my turn. My name is Mary and I hail from the "arctic" state
of Minnesota. I'm almost 40 and was raised in Penfield, a very small
town in south central Illinois. I managed to move to Minnesota about 15
years ago and couldn't find a reason to leave. I share my life with my
wonderful DH of 6 yrs, a DD who is 4 yrs old, 2 felines and 1 cranky
quarter horse.
I've been doing some kind of sewing/stitching for as long as I can
remember. I currently earn a living as a custom dressmaker, designing
and sewing mostly wedding attire. My stitching loves are 17th century
samplers and gold work. I've also started migrating toward stumpwork,
raised embroidery and Japanese embroidery.
The craziest thing I've done lately is to let my DH have our house
raised up so we could have a new foundation/basement constructed. You
see, DH is a fanatical model railroader and wanted to have the ideal
basement for his "layout of a lifetime". After 8 months of chaos, we
finally have a basement with about 1,100 beautifully finished square
feet. DH is very happy so that makes me happy too.
Oh yeah, TV......I'm addicted to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and
Charmed....although my VCR watches more TV than I do.
It's time to stop rambling now and go back to my semi-lurking statis

Whyfor? You're too easy a target. <G> Besides, remember that when you
post things like "a little over a month shy of 35" - I know your
birthday and am not above sharing. OTOH, we have established that I can
be bribed with stash and/or chocolate. <G> ((Mine's too far off to be
significant.))

Let's see...guilty as charged. I just started stitching last July,
after swearing for years I would never do it. I dabbled with it in a
Creative Textiles class in 8th grade - all I remember were how hard
French knots were..... and hadn't touched it since.

But Kilmeny taught my daughters (3 of them - 9,9 and 6) and then left
town. I had no choice but to learn in order to support my kids in their
new hobby. My dh is now watching the growth of my stash with no small
alarm. Yesterday I bought a little quilted bag/stand for my WIP's and
he was *relieved* it wasn't more scroll rods. Rods would have been
cheaper, silly man.

When not stitching I am a SAHM to the above mentioned DD's and a 4 year
old DS. We also have 2 resident emperor cats - the stogy Mr. Patches
(Tabby) and Joey, a mostly charming 2 year old tabby point siamese.
I am a teacher by training and currently homeschool the children. Given
that dh is in school and tends to move each April, this has really
reduced the disruption in the kids education.

I read when I can - sci fi, Tom Clancy, theology, whatever and watch TV
if offered, but can live without it.

Next project - a move - location yet unknown but packing must commence.

Hi all,

I'm Judy. I live in Sydney Australia. I'm 38 this year,
celebrate my 16th anniversary next month, and have two DD's
DD1 (15 next month), DD2 (9 today).

I've been xs for 13 years and now do hardanger, latch-hook rugs,
pulled work, long stitch and a small amount of needlepoint.
I've almost finished a knitted pillow and plan to teach myself
quilting this year.

I am also a lurker by nature. I have been reading RCTN for 6 years now and
have "met" many wonderful people and have joined many on-line groups (floss
exchange, Round Robins).

I have been stitching for around 15 years (started early teens). I model
stitch for a few companies and am currently taking a well needed break from
model stitching so I can get some of my own project done. I have around 10
WIPs. I am proud to say that I just (yesterday) finished MLI's Angel of Spring
and am currently working on DMC's Rose Fairy (she is 75% done). Like most
stitchers, my stash is HUGE (8 file drawers full of leaflets, a 30 gallon
container holding scroll bars, frames and kits, 15 Darice (sp?) containers of
DMC floss...around 4 of each color, a drawer full of charms and specialty
threads, another Darice (sp?) full of Mill Hill beads and metallics, plus a 20
gallon tub that holds my fabric). I hope to finish at least 1% of my stash in
my lifetime. I am able to stitch 2-6 hours a day, most of it is during the
night when I can't sleep.

I am married to a wonderful man. He has had diabetes for 28 years and has had
many health problems because of it (leg amputation, stroke, eye problems,
kidney transplant, heart surgery) which has given me the opportunity to stay at
home and raise my daughter who is now 9 years old. Even with hubby's
disabilities we lead a VERY normal life...we love camping, traveling and doing
other things during the summer months. We have our own "Noah's Ark" (our
animals come in pairs): 2 dogs, 2 cats, 2 ferrets, 2 birds and a 55 gallon
fish tank that I am sure has an even amount of fish.

I am trying to be a good RCTNer and post more instead of always lurking:-)

Happy stitching,

Beth

I'm Barbara, been reading RCTN for something like 8 mos. I think. 26,
single, graduate student studying genetics and molecular biology at Purdue
(hoping that it's Dr. Barbara by next Dec.). Living in Indiana, but grew
up in Michigan. Been stitching since I was I think 7 or 8 years old.
WIPs include a Winnie-the-Pooh birth sampler, an adaptation of a sampler
in Leisure Arts "P is for Pooh" booklet (which I happily got to work on
all weekend - I get so little time to stitch, it felt sooooo good!);
Christmas bells (on a green towel); a seascape from Cross-Stitch and
Country Crafts (this one I've been working at off and on for about 10
years now). Most everything I do is as gifts for others, so the seascape,
which I plan to keep and frame for me, tends to take a back burner to
other projects.

Other hobbies include guitar, piano, running. Love animals - grew up on a
farm, raised rabbits for 4-H. Current pets include 2 cats and a rat,
which I am "babysitting" for my boss while she's out of the country, and a
salamander (unusual pet, eh? - he was an orphan, friend got him from
Wal-Mart of all places, didn't know how to care for him, and no longer
wanted him). Books - love 'em, have lots as Mom is a librarian; sci-fi
fantasy is my genre. TV - Friends, ER, Judging Amy, Junkyard Wars, New
Detectives (DSC), among others, and various sci-fi shows (very sorry
Babylon 5 ended).

I'm Tamara, 47, single, living in San Diego. I started in Cleveland and
wandered the country living twice in Ohio, four times in Michigan, once in
Missouri and three times in California (twice northern, once southern). I
have two cats - a 4 year old red tabby named Fraser after the Mountie on
"Due South" and a 12 year old tabby point Siamese named Mieze which means
kitty in German. He doesn't speak the language and the name is lost on him.
I keep a brother in Berkeley, one in Ohio and a sister in Germany for
travelling purposes.

I too was a legal secretary/paralegal for 13 years when I developed carpal
tunnel and fibromyalgia. I've been on a medical leave of absence for 7
years. I've spent that 7 years doing genealogy research both for myself and
others. I have now inherited a book on deciphering Germanic Script from my
mother, sales of which are going well and keep me quite busy.

I inherited my needlework abilities form my Danish great-grandmother. I was
taught to sew at age 5 and was making all my own clothes by 12. I started
cross stitch about 17 years ago and have finished about 200 projects. In
spite of that I have a full dresser drawer of things I got sick of stitching
and will never finish for one reason or another. I've been to SOXS five
times and am game for anything including hardanger, canvas, blackwork,
ribbon embroidery and duplicate stitch. I'm learning needle tatting and
bobbin lace. I've stitched two large projects from photos, one my parents'
wedding picture in sepia tones (24" x 36") and one of my mother and
grandmother taken in 1944.

I'm addicted to TV and will watch most anything. I read 52 books every year
including everything written by Grisham, Irving, Plain, Siddons, Hoffman,
Bradford, Binchy, Ann Tyler and Ursula Hegi. I seem to be stuck on cat
mysteries these days and have collected most of them. In my spare time I
take my father to 21 baseball games a year.

Hi! I'm another one who's been lurking for a while. My name is Teresa
Collins, age 48, married, two grown sons and a 4 month old grandson! I
live in San Diego county and I sure enjoy the weather but not those
electric bills. They are pretty much the same story as everyone else has
shared lately about their bills.
I've been stitching since I was a kid, steadiely for 15 years. A few
of the more time consuming projects I've finished over the years, many,
many wedding and birth samplers, Smoky Mountian Cats, 3 Crossed Wing
designs, Terry Nolan's Santa Baby ( I have his *Shall We Dance* 3/4 of
the way done but I'm taking a break from it ). Same story with MLI's
*Ice Angel*. I'm going to start her Peace Angel this week, I just love
her story about designing it. I also like to knit but there's not much
call for sweaters in So. Cal. :)

I sure enjoy RCTN and I check in every day!

Hi - I'm Beth in Edmonton and I lurk more than I post. I generally come
here in the evening and read everything, then go away until the next night
:-)).

I am 59 and looking forward to 60 so I can (maybe) become semi-retired.
I have lived in Edmonton, Alberta since 1966 and before that was in B.C. and
Toronto where I was born. I didn't 'run away' but did also join the
Canadian Armed Forces at 20; in my case it was the Air Force, before it was
merged with the others. I met my DH while stationed in B.C. and when we
were discharged we came to Edmonton. We have four children and six
grandchildren. We have been married now for 37 years.

I work full time at Wal-Mart as a layaway associate and also answer the
switchboard. My training is secretarial but when the kids came along I
became a SAHM until they were grown. By then my skills were gone and I
didn't have the computer training needed so wound up in retail. I can
still type though (vbg).

Besides cross-stitching I also knit but haven't done any for a couple of
years now. I like to knit afghans because with those I don't have to
worry about tension and have done them for three of my grandchildren. I
have to get busy and do the rest, but I am too hooked on stitching.

I also have more stash than I'll ever stitch but isn't it fun building it
up? I am presently stitching, in rotation Marty Bell's Rocky Mountain
Christmas, MLI's Angel of Grace, Mirabilia's Giggles in the Snow (girl),
TW;s Noah's Ark, MB's A Woman of Beauty and the R.C.A.F. badge. Also
started but not touched in months are The Ultimate Debate and the Precious
Moments blanket.

I am a diehard Star Trek fan and watch Voyager nearly every night. I also
enjoy Stargate, JAG. CSI, Diagnosis Murder and Cold Squad. I cheer for
the Edmonton Oilers (hockey) , Edmonton Eskimos (football), Edmonton
Trappers (Triple-A baseball) and the Toronto Blue Jays. Right now I am
looking foward to the Scott Tournament of Hearts next month (women's
curling).

Guess that's it. You can see pictures of my WIPs and finished stitching
at my photopoint page, if you like.

Hi everyone!

I´m Jacinta (most people call me Jac), 25, single and an Aussie now living in
Berlin. I am doing my PhD in Biochemistry (sorta), sail whenever I can, and travel
as much as my budget allows. I also spend far too much of my budget on discovering
everything that this city has to offer (and it is a LOT) and buying books in
English (alas my german is still extremely bad).
I have been doing cross stitch since I was about 12 when my mum (coincidentally she
was also my high school sewing teacher) taught me, and am now getting into other
types of needlework, although finding that a bit impeded by the lack of needlework
shops and other needleworkers that I can communicate effectively with (once again,
my terrible german).
I read sci-fi, fantasy, espionage, action, thrillers and watch pretty much the
same. My favourite shows these days are Kochduel and the weather segment on CNN
with Guillermo. Otherwise I just hang out with friends and try not to annoy people
too much.

Okay, I think I'm the fifth one from the Houston area. My name is Lollee, I'm a

I'm 45 years old (dang that hurt), married, no kids or pets (allergies). Right
now I work at home doing chart reviews. I like plain cross stitch but I am
getting more into specialty stitches. I'm a member of EGA, and I may even take
a course or something eventually.

Good morning,
My name is Margie and I'm from Colliers, WV. I've been back to cross
stitching for a bit over a year now and I laugh. After several years of not
doing any stitching due to working, I made my daughter-in-law a Christmas gift
and that started it all over again. I bought my first hardback book of patterns
at a Half Price bookstore and told my husband it would last me for years. Ha!
Then while on the web I discovered this group and found it was OK to have "alot"
<oh happiness>. My Stash grew from one or two, to three or four, till now a
bookcase that once held paperbacks now holds my magazines, leaflets and books.
I get as much joy out of looking through these and 'touching the pictures of
what could be' as I do of doing. And other half is now used to me 'building my
library' as I call it.
I'm 51, married 30 years and have one married son who is older than he should
be, 25. Somehow he doesn't match the pictures of the little boy on the wall.
Where has all that time gone?
Our 'children' now are one chihuahua named Knot, four cats, which he rules, a
15 year old African Grey parrot who is people and my fish. I also enjoy
reading, action adventure, political espionage, some sci-fi and my movie tastes
are the same. And dabble at writing with a friend of mine. We've done this for
over 3 years now. It keeps our minds alive.
Usually lurk here, wishing I had the skill to do some of the really great
projects you all do, but at the same time happy with what I do, do. I finished
the Dragon in the Candydish in time for Christmas for my son. And also Miss
Pollyanna Van Thumperbunny from Alma Lynne's bunny afghan for my
daughter-in-law. Could be why that last minute rush before Christmas,.. why
I've taken great interest in your thread on shoulder, arm pain.
I know Margie, 'take breaks, sit straight, use the lapstand' and try doing
something else. haha.. and now, back to my basically lurking status. Hello

Hi, I'm Bobbie Viorritto from Manchester, NH. (Hi Robin!! and Allison!)

I've been on RCTN for 3 years and have met many friends. I have been
cross stitching since 1984 when I had a SEVERE reaction to the wool I
was using for crewel and needlepoint. Have done some form of needlework
all my life.

I'm married, to DH that I met while in the USNavy. Have three children
all are presently away from home. One in USN and stationed in Japan, two
at college. This is the first time DH and I have been Kidless in a
lonnnnng time. I'm a professional bridal seamstress, and work full time
seasonal (March- November) This leaves me with time to stitch.

I am currently finishing LB Behold, Angel of Peace. I finished MLI's
Emma's Garden, EarthDancer, Earthrise, and many hardanger ornaments last
year. I tend not to work in rotation, but have ready to go Enchanted
Alphabet, On your toes, Mother to Daughter, True Love and 14 ornaments
from JCS 2000.

I love doing wildlife. Recently I finished the Bald Eagle from Cross My Heart ,
Endangered Species and Into Africa, the Lion. I am currently working onthe
tiger from Born Free.
I have also promised my 3 year old daughter I would stitch her the ballerina in
Ballet Classics and my 13 year old The Castle by TW (eek what was I thinking).
My 2 year old also has put his order in for Elmo. I think I need to start a
rotation I check this newsgroup every day and it has been very helpful learning
new things about crossstitch.

My name is Laura and I'm married and a SAHM. My DH's name is David and
my DDs are Ariel (9) and Annwynn (18 mo). I also have two cats -
Charcola and Nox.

Before I left work to stay at home, I did desktop publishing and graphic
design. I'm going to be going back to graduate school in the next couple
of years to get my MLS (Master of Library Science). Eventually I'd like
to work in a theological library, since my bachelors is in Religion.

I like stitching all kinds of things, as you can see by my WIP list
below. I'm really interested in learning new techniques right now so
that I can expand beyond cross stitch. My favorite designers are TW,
Mirabilia, and band samplers in general.

Other than stitching I like to read, watch some TV (The Learning Channel,
Discovery Channel, History Channel and PBS mostly) and play around
online. I also enjoy just getting out and doing things with my husband.

Hello I am Pamela. I live in Lafayette, Indiana and I am a stay-at-home
mom. I have five children (blended family 3 mine, 2 his) and right now
at this moment REALLY wishing there was not a two hour delay today (icy
roads and kids are not in a good mood!!!).

I enjoy cross stitch, sewing, gardening, reading (Love Monice
Ferris!!). I learned to cross stitch about 15 years ago when I was
stranded at college while my roommates went home. And after finding
this group a year ago my stash has really grown!!

Designers I like are Marilyn Leavitt-Imblum (L&L and Butternut Road),
Nora Corbett (Mirabilia), Teresa Wentzler, Paula Vaughan, Bent Creek,
Shepard's Bush....ok the list goes on and on... ;)

I am currently working on Celtic Banner (love it!!), Celtic Christmas,
Fairy Flora and Gathering Eggs from Mirabilia, and Maggie the
Messmaker. I also would like to finish all my UFOs this year...only
three or four.

I hope to one day have my own needlework shop! I know that is a dream
for all stitchers but I have started researching and socking money away
for when I am ready!!

I love this group. I have learned so many helpful things, and found
that there is more to cross stitch than what JoAnns, Michaels, and Hobby
Lobby have to offer.

Hi, I'm Jolene in Minnesota. I'm 52 (how did that happen??) and have been
married for 30 years to my HS sweetheart. Our 22 year old son is mildly
mentally handicapped and lives at home while going to a school program and
working. He's taught us a lot. Our 19 year old son (the smart one) is a
freshman at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Some days we can't tell
which is the bright one and which is disabled. They're wonderful guys.

We also have an aging Vizsla (Hungarian pointer) named Rooney, that we love
to death. For the first 7 years he was the dog from h*ll. Now he's finally
mellowed as he approaches 13! He's sleeping peacfully on the bed today--
all 65 pounds of him.

I quit my teaching job in 1978 to be a SAHM and have never gone back. I
teach a women's Bible study at my Lutheran church and do other volunteer
things to keep busy. DH has his own law firm specializing in patents,
trademarks, and copyrights. He's tolerant and understanding of my stitchery
*habit*. And I don't mess with his golf stuff!

I started sewing doll clothes and doing stamped embroidered pillow cases
when I was very young. I did the usual craftiness in the 1970's: sewing
polyester pantsuits, orange macrame plant hangers, beads on foam balls.
There were some pretty awful things back then! In the early 80's a friend
taught me cross stitch, which is my favorite. After several years' hiatus
while I did the Cub Scouts, room mother, school volunteer things, I have
gone back to cross stitch. Like Rip Van Winkle waking up, I discovered that
other people were stitching on linen and using beads and specialty fibers.
I'm loving getting back into it. RCTN has been such an inspiration and
learning experience for me. I enjoy the diversity here. My world is pretty
homogenized here in the midwest. I have lurked for a long time, posted a
little, then ducked under the covers during last summer's 'copyright war of
2000'. : )

Hi, I'm Laura from Milwaukee. I'm in Beer, hence the name.

I like to cross stitch and needlepoint. My mother taught me how to
needlepoint when I was three (and that project is still not done.)

I also like to cook, sew, garden and travel. I'm 31, unmarried with no
children and no pets, so I pretty much get to indulge my hobbies
whenever I want. (except the travel. I just bought a house so my
wings have been clipped.)

I lurk around RCTN whenever I get a chance. I've picked up some great
tips from here.

Oh, yes, and I can do French Knots.

Must get back to lurking.

> I do more and more counted-thread work that isn't
>really cross-stitch, which is what I did almost exclusively for many

Ha. Another one.

I'm Maggie, now in Virginia for many years, but born and raised in Michigan. My
aunt taught me to cross-stitch 30 years ago, but eventually I got tired of just
cross-stitch and didn't really do much until designers started including other
counted thread stitches. I like to do the offbeat stuff--I did Mary Garry's
octaganal sewing box, for instance. I'm also learning to spin and weave and
trying to learn some of the other old textile arts. I sew, quilt, knit,
crochet, and if a really good (fantasy) canvas comes along, needlepoint. I have
a huge one called "Fairy Condo" that has turned out to be rather intimidating
now that I've got it, and I haven't set a stitch yet. If you like pagan
patterns, try Phoenix Stichery, she's got some gorgeous ones.

I did the Girl Scout thing too......I'm 48, and my son is 22 and my daughter
19, in her first year at college. I was trained as a botanist, actually worked
as one at the Smithsonian before my son was born. Then became stay at home
mom--infant day care was nearly non-existant back then, and neither of us had
any family in the area. Did volunteer work with the Girl Scouts, was a
volunteer firefighter/EMT for years, and did things with the kids' schools off
and on as they came up. I also started working a little as a finisher for my
LNS. That work came in handy when first marriage ended and I became a single
mom. That built up over the years until now I do it full time, and for two
stores. Now that I've re-married and my children are grown I'm thinking of
trying to work at things botanical again.

>(Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans)

How does that work? I think there are some groups around here in the Falls
Church area, but since I joined ADF I haven't looked seriously.

>local filk community
Really? <S> I used to listen to that quite a bit, like Leslie Fish, but haven't
in recent years. Any filk from Xena yet? <G> I love that show, and was really
disappointed to hear that it's ending.

>Katie and I tend to read many of the same fiction books,

You're lucky--neither of my kids picked up my interest in scifi/fantasy. My son
read LOTR and my daughter is a Harry Potter freak like me, but that's about it.
I read a lot of different things, including Monica Ferris, really like her
books. We listen to a lot of music, including bagpipe--I love Scotland. Did you
know there's such a thing as classical bagpipe? <BG>

We also have two cats, a dog, four birds and a ferret--the noise level hasn't
noticeably gone down any with the kids gone.

I have been with rctn for some time, so many people can skip this. I
am Jim, one of about a dozen or so males who frequent rctn. I am a
widower; my wife, Jill, died just over two years ago. We were married
for 50 wonderful years. On these sorts of surveys, I usually come out the
oldest or second oldest.
I have been knitting and crocheting since I got married, but
discovered counted cross stitch in 1975, when Jill and I had three
delightful years on a posting to Den Haag in The Netherlands. Over the
years, we filled our walls with pictures, and I sort of ran out of
patterns I liked just over 10 years ago. I have finished other people's
UFO's (about a couple of dozen). Just after Jill died, I found some
patterns I had been searching for, for years - female nudes. These are
patterns of famous paintings made by scanning the picture and using
appropiate computer software and artistic input. I have one completed, La
Source, by Jean Dominique Ingres; a second three-quarters finished -
Ariadne Asleep on the Island of Naxos, by Peter Vanderline; and a third
pattern to do - The Naked Maja, by Goya.
I am a scientist (physics) by training, and spent most of my career
in Operations Research. I tend to do most things in a scientific way, and
counted cross stitching is no exception. I have 2 children, and 4
grandchildren - no great-grandchildren as yet.

Hi, I'm Lynn from Lancaster PA. I've been reading RCTN for about 5
years. I've learned so much here, most of all that it's good to have a
LARGE stash! Before I started reading RCTN my entire collection fit
into a small cardboard carton. Now I'm afraid to assemble it all in one
area, so I have things stashed away in several rooms of my house!

I have been married for 25 years, and I'm 49. We have a son who is a
freshman in college, and a daughter who will finish grad school in May
and be a speech therapist. I've always been a stay-at home mom, and now
that my children have left I guess I'm retired! I do a good bit of
volunteer work with our local schools, and have recently started
volunteering at the public library and serving on their board. The
library is very interesting, a whole new area of interest for me.

Because of RCTN I've met many wonderful people in person.....Beth Katz,
Lady Doc, Kathy Hoover, Jacqueline from West Virginia, and lots of
others! I've started attending CATS (or HOCS or Spirit) and met even
more stitchers and designers. I've even met Christina (some of you will
remember her) and I miss her very much. I've also met people from all
over the world, and feel like I could travel to many countries and visit
stitchers!

I have also tried so many techniques that I had never even heard of
before I started reading RCTN. I like hardanger, drawn thread work,
pulled thread, whitework, and probably lots of others!

I'm glad to see so many new people responding to this thread, I enjoy
"meeting" you all.

Hi,

My name is Anne and I am 37,never married and no prospects. Born and raised in
Topeka, KS (youngest of 5 and the only girl, which I think tends to explain a
lot). On the Meyers-Briggs Personality Scale I am an ISPF. I got a job with
the US Department of Defense right out of college (math major) working as a
computer analyst. I ended up specializing in UNIX System Administration. That
job moved to Maryland where I finally ended up in Ellicott City. Took a 4 1/2
year tour with the DOD to the Wiesbaden, Germany area. I left the government 2
weeks shy of 15 years because I just couldn't take it any more. I have been
working in the private sector doing system admin work for just a couple of
months and think my "headhunter" did a wonderful job finding a job that I really
like working with a great group of people.

I started cross-stitching when I was in college and helping with a local Girl
Scout troop. I taught myself to crochet about 2 years ago and have since made
5 afghans and a scarf.

My other preoccupations include my 5 cats (Merryweather, Sherlock, Queen
Victoria aka Vicky, Lady Katherine aka Kathy, and Patience(because he tries
mine)), singing with my church choir, voice lessons, reading and playing
handbells at my church.

This seems like as good a time as any for me to "delurk" as well.

My name is Jan Goulding, I am 36 and live in Edinburgh, Scotland.

I use to be a motor racing marshall but I injured my knee badly running over
a gravel trap about ten years ago. Whilst I was in hospital, having the
knee repaired, (and feeling very sorry for myself) one of the wonderful
ladies of the Womens Royal Voluntary Service gave me a small cross stitch
kit and spend time showing me exactly how to read the chart and do the
stiches. I haven't looked back since! I always have several projects on
the go at any given time. Unfortuantely I only have one project with me in
Edinburgh, which is one of the Julie Hasler needlpoint cats (siamese
cushion). The others are all with my other half at our home in Manchester
<sobs>.

In terms of other things that I like apart from stitching and motor racing,
I like playing computer games (love Duke Nukem and Command and Conquer),
reading (almost anything) and music (classical, avant-garde, and
electronic).

I don't have a TV, but I am a radio addict - BBC Radio 4 - there is nothing
quite like John Humphries giving a politician a hard time at 6:30 am and I
really can't miss "The Archers".

Currently doing lots of stitching as I am off work due to stress!

I think that about sums me up at the moment!

Regards to you all

Hi all!

My name is Paula. I'm less than a week away from being 34 (when did
that happen?). I'm engaged to a wonderful man named James who
appreciates the results of my stitching obsession, and tolerates my
stash. We live with an 18 month old puppy named Molly who believes she
is really a small child in a fur coat. She came to live with us last
year after being abandoned with her sister and two brothers; we've been
blessed with a wonderful friend who is outgrowing the resulting
separation anxieties quite nicely. We live in Upstate New York, about
halfway between Binghamton and New York City.

I work full time as a Marketing Analyst in the corporate office of a
cable television company, and part time as a 9-1-1 dispatcher. I also
volunteer as a firefighter and EMT. I also teach EMT, CPR and first
aid classes. In the rest of my spare time, I'm also a "garbage head"
when it comes to reading - if it has pages to turn, I'll read it, but
my favorites include John Grisham, Nora Roberts, Maeve Binchy, Anne
Rice, etc, etc. I'm keeping my eyes open for Monica Ferris's
mysteries, but haven't yet come across them. I don't watch much TV
(pretty ironic, considering my job), but when I do, it's mostly A&E,
Discovery, the Learning Channel, the History Channel and BBC America.
I do watch Third Watch and Law and Order regularly, though.

I've been doing some sort of needlework since I was 6. My grandmother
taught me to crochet. From there I went on to learn knitting, then to
stitching. I started with cross stitch, but have taught myself
blackwork, ribbon embroidery, hardanger, and cut thread work. My
biggest fault with my projects is that I give most of them away (I am
blessed with friends and family who truly appreciate the value of a
handmade creation). I have plenty of stash (not that I don't acquire
more whenever I get the chance!), but my purchasing habits are kept in
check by the fact that I don't really have a LNS; the closest one is in
Endicott, about an hour and a half from me. Somehow, it's easier to
stick to what I need when ordering online than when I can touch and
feel in a "real" store!!

I haven't been to any festivals lately, but attended SOXS when it was
in Lancaster. I met several people from RCTN there, and had a blast!
I'd love to go to CATS this year, but can't quite convince DF that I
should miss our wedding for it!! (And he doesn't see the merchandise
mall as an acceptable venue LOL)

Okay, my turn...

I'm Sarah G. (to differentiate myself from all the other Sarahs out
there) and I currently reside in Issaquah, WA (near Seattle) with hubby
(n-scale train enthusiast), two young sons (1.5 yrs, and 3.5 yrs -
destructo-boys), and one destructo-cat named Tinker (latin name:
Clawdius).

I'm an army brat, and my family still lives in Germany. I went to
school in the US, mainly, and spent one year at the University of
Aberdeen, Scotland. I'm currently earning a paycheck as an Executive
Assistant, and am an aspiring cross-stitch designer.

Ah, we won't even talk about STASH!

I just discovered RCTN, although I've seen the group referred to quite
a few times. I'm still trying to discover how to get summary emails
sent to me.

For the personal, I'm MBTI INFJ, and an avid reader of Sci-Fi/Fantasy.
Favorite shows are Sci-Fi, Whose Line, and AYBS?. My american Grandma
taught me to do stamped-cross stitch, but I gave it up. In hind-sight,
I think it was too big, as counted-cross stitch appeals to me much
more, especially anything that is 22-ct or more (at least while my eyes
and hands can still handle it). A family friend introduced me to cross-
stitch, and I've been going at it since... and going, and going, and
going....

Ok, time for me to delurk too...
Hello, I'm Maureen. I'm 31 this month. I'm still a newlywed to Will (23), 6 months
on Christmas Eve. We have a son, who's 4, and two cats, Smokey and Blue.

I do cross stitch. I would love to do more, but I work full time and then there is
my family. I get so little time in these days! LOL

I love to read, but don't get much time. When I do I am mostly reading New Age
type things. My TV time is combined with stitching time. My favorites are The
Young and the Restless and ER. I have to tape both, so I stitch while I catch up.
Oh and Millionaire now too... not sure how I got hooked on that but I did. LOL

I have been reading RCTN about 2 1/2 or 3 years now. I have learned sooo many
things. Mostly I lurk, but I get a post in once in a while. My stash is not as
large as I would like, and my WIPs are too many! I stitch what strikes me at the
time.

I guess that's about all for me!

Going back to lurking!

Hi! I'm Rachel and I live in Scottsdale, Arizona USA. I have been reading
this group since last year and have learned so much from you all. Thank
you. I am usually very quiet, but here is my bio info for anyone who is
interested. I grew up in the mid-west, graduated from the University of
Missouri at Rolla eons ago (1965) and went to work as a scientific
programmer for IBM in upstate NY. Met my future husband there, married, and
produced a son. That put an end to my career. I have been a SAHM, with
minor exceptions, ever since. I actually have two sons total; 29 and 26
years old now. We moved from NY to Boulder, CO in 1978, then on to Tucson,
AZ in 1979 because of my husband's work. In 1998 we moved to Scottsdale,
again because of my DH's work. My hobbies are cross stitching and learning
to speak German. About 15 years ago I decided it was a shame that I had
never learned a foreign language and starting taking classes. I am still
not very good at it, but I plug along. I read a German mailing list for
cross stitch to keep my interest going. (Some of the ladies here are in
that group. Hallo!) My current passion is making notecards with small
patterns. I love to collect foreign cross stitch magazines and making the
patterns in them. I also love to travel, especially to Germany and England.

Things haven't changed much for me since the last time we did this, but here it
is: I'm Katrina -- I would go by my middle name, but it's even worse! I've
been a school librarian for 20 years, but I'm trying to switch to something I
can do at home, since I have a chronic illness that shows no signs of
improvement -- bleech (literally, it's a stomach thing!)

I have a husband who's into dressing up like a frontiersman and shooting bows
and arrows -- he's grown his hair out like Mel Gibson in "The Patriot" --
yummy! He supports my stitching but I think he's still peeved that I wouldn't
sew some leather Daniel Boone britches for him. I also share space with one
daughter and one son. The daughter is sixteen and an avid stitcher. She has a
huge stash of patterns and fabric, but "makes do" with MY DMC collection, poor
thing. My son is seven. He has one UFO, a whale on 8 to an inch Aida. We
have three pets: a dog, Lara; and two cats, Turlough and Tasha. All are
elderly, and the cats are cranky, too!

I am now working on "Cottage Quilts" by Linda Myers -- I'm a sucker for quilts,
but my two quilts are UFOs -- and a knitted sweater for my son. I've been
sewing and doing needlework all my life, so it seems, but only seriously got
into cross-stitch during the '80s. Until I started reading RCTN, I felt like a
weirdo because I used fabric other than Aida! Now I feel right at home!

Naturally, being a librarian, I like to read: mostly mysteries. Lately I've
been researching romance books, since I have decided to seriously tackle a
writing career, and romance is something I know I can write...once I get past
snickering at the annoying repetition of the word "manhood" during the spicy
bits. I watch practically no series TV, although I always catch up on Law and
Order in the summers.

I am a native Floridian (three generations at least) and live in Ocala, a small
town south of Gainesville -- I noticed a Gainesville dweller here, another
person who enjoys a dangerous proximity to "Cross Stich and More," a store that
leads to hyperventilation big time!

This year I'm going to finish Cottage Quilts, them possibly the Miribilia
freebies and four new Christmas stockings. Beyond that, I have no idea...

Hi all. My name is Sherry Murphy, I turn 60 in February and live in
Vancouver, WA. I started lurking at RCTN just over a year ago when I was
recovering from hip replacement surgery and have really enjoyed being here.
I am married to an Irishman named Courtney who has been in the states since
1978 and is still not a citizen - he's working on it now. I have two
children,a son 37 - still unmarried - and a daughter 35 - married to a
wonderful man but no children yet - they are thinking about it though. They
all live in Portland, OR just across the river. I also have a wonderful
stepson, 32 - married to a radio operator in the Navy. They live in Guam.
We live with three cats - a black male named Mickey, a long haired
Hiimalayan named Winnie, and a gray tabby kitten named Missy Twinkle Toes.

I am an accountant by trade and have had my own home practice since 1993
when one of my boss's clients asked me to take on his restaurant business
full time. I was able to do that from home and take on a few more smaller
clients. Unfortunately, he ended up going bankrupt and moving to New York
just before the end of 1999. Fortunately, that was just before my hip
surgery so I had plenty of time to recuperate. Unfortunately, it means now
that I am recovered, I have to find some new clients!

My major WIP is a book. Since 1984, I have been transcribing some civil war
diaries than I inherited. I found a publisher two years ago and have been
working with an editor for the last year and a half to get the manuscript
footnoted and indexed. All of this has been done over the internet and
telephone. Finally made a trip to Gettysburg in October to meet with my
editor and had a wonderful time- he is head of the Civil War Institute at
Carroll College in Wisconsin. I submitted the final manuscript to the
publisher last week and it will be on the bookshelves in June. After years
of being a voracious reader, I can hardly believe I am about to become an
author. They tell me the book will become a primary source document for
civil war researchers. They also tell me I will have to do book tours,
talks and signings - I'm not so sure I am looking forward to that!

I have been doing some kind of needlework since I was a child and have done
just about everything except Tatting. I sew a lot and am wishing for an
embroidery sewing machine now. I got back into cross stich when I was
incapacitated with my hip problem and have really learned a lot from RCTN.
I am currently in the process of teaching my 9 year old niece to sew as her
mother can hardly sew on a button. She completed a tote bag, triangle scarf
and 2 bean bags last weekend and is really excited about it but can't get
her interested in cross stitch yet. I recently finished Antique Game of
Golf for my son and a Map of Ireland for my husband, now working on a set of
towel's for my mother and a map of Munster County, Ireland for my nephew.
Then it is on to a Chili Sampler for my husband. I have some MLI's waiting
in the wings.

I have only posted a few times when it seemed I could contribute something
no one else could but I really enjoy reading all the postings. Keep it up.

My name is Melinda. I live in Texas. I'm single, no kids, have a job with a
state agency. I got into cross stitching after college because someone gave me
a beautiful cross stitched angel and I wanted to be able to create beautiful
pieces also. It was something I never thought I'd be able to do cause I'm so
bad at math, but I keep plugging away. I like reading, computer graphics,
movies. My favorite kinds of projects are those that have a meaning to the
person for whom I am making it, since I give my projects as gifts.

I'm more likely to start projects than finish them but I love the look of a
finished cross stitch project. I've made a few really special pieces. One I did
for my brother in Kansas is Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz from a Charles Craft
leaflet. It took me almost a year but I refused to give up on it. I recently
finished a project for a friend who is an actor. It says, "A friend is a book
of which but one copy is made." It's from an old "Cross Stitcher" magazine and
depicts an open book on a table in front of a candle with a set of books
standing on the table in back. I put the names of the local plays my friend
appeared in on the spines of the books. It turned out beautifully, if I do say
so myself. ;-)

I'm currently working on a project of my own design. My niece wrote a poem in
school last year that I thought was pretty good (she was 10 at the time) and I
designed a chart using alphabets and motifs from my impressive stash of charts.
(See, collecting is a good thing!)

I just discovered this newsgroup and will be lurking and posting as time and

needlework projects people are interested in. It's always good to know who

I'm Sue, and I've been lurking and very occasionally posting for about
five years.

I have three children: DS is 22, DDs are 17 and 12. I do lots of counted
cross stitch, Hardanger, sewing; some crochet and quilting. I've always
done crafts; I remember doing stamped cross stitch at about 8 y.o. and
making crewel and needlepoint pillows in my early teens. Taught myself
Hardanger in my early 20s, based on pieces worked by my Nowegian
grandmothers.

Right now I'm working on TW's "Carousel" for DD#1. She wants me to
finish it before she goes off to college in the fall, which will be a
challenge, as I've been making starts at it for about five years, only
to peter out after several weeks' effort. (But this time it'll be
different!!) Also a wonderful dragon guarding his treasure, a bookmark
with the freebie knotwork design from tompudding.com, and a pattern
called "Hardanger Hearts". Gearing up to start a quilt with appliqued
dragon designs for DD#1.

DH and I have been married 25 years and we work together to publish a
folk music magazine called "Dirty Linen" (hence my email address...not
stitching related, alas!). My preferred reading: all kinds of fiction,
as long as it's well written (Ian Rankin, Robertson Davies, Rosamunde
Pilcher, Gail Godwin, Ken Follett, PD James). Preferred teas (to follow
up on other threads): hometown brew McCormick (Baltimore, MD, USA) and
Fortnum & Mason Queen Anne's Blend. (With half and half, thank you!) TV
shows watched: ER, PBS Mystery, Masterpiece Theater, and the charming
Ballykissangel. Addictions: "All My Children" when I can make lunch
break coincide; chocolate (of course); stash enhancement; baking
scrumptious desserts from scratch; r.c.t.n.

I love reading everyone's stories, helpful hints, insights,
humor...everything that goes on in the r.c.t.n. community!

I'm Carol, I have been reading this section for about 2 mths. now. I do know that I
don't know a darn thing about cross stitch!! I love to stitch but now I feel very
little compared to all of you!. I live in CT. I was looking for a certain pattern
and posted a note but no one ever replied. That is how I came upon this site. I
keep looking, maybe someday I will get the instructions for the one I saw and
wanted to cross stitch. Meantime, I enjoy reading your posts, everyone!!

Hi, I'm Lei, 28 years old and living in Japan. My husband is an
overseas manager for an airline and we move every 2-3 years. Our last
posting was in Taipei, Taiwan where I was born and surprisingly, even
though I moved to the U.S. when I was 6 years old, Taipei didn't feel
too strange (or any more strange any place else!).

I've been frequenting RCTN for the past year since I got the cross
stitching urge back again. I started stitching when I was 11 and
really got serious in grad school when I needed a stress reliever.
Along the way I have interested many friends in picking up cross stitch
and consider that an important part of stitching. I have a Ph.D. in
epidemiology (the study of the distribution and causes of diseases in
populations) but am only working part time via the internet. I got a
bit burnt out after being in school continuously for too many years.
I'm finding that I am enjoying not working to the chagrin of my
friends, family, and colleagues!

In my new free time, I've been able to branch out into different forms
of embroidery including hardanger, ribbon, etc. Hope that I'll
continue to learning forever.

It's been fun conversing with all of you!

My name is Anne and I'm 37 years old. I've been a member of RCTN for about 5
years. I ran into our newsgroup one day while being lost on the Internet! I
live outside of San Francisco in the Silicon Valley, where your computers and
software are born and bred......unfortunatley, I'm almost computer illiterate.
I'm single and have 5 "kids" who think they are my human children! 3 of
them are cockatiel birds - Lacey, Lolly, and Chirp. 1 is a baby cockatoo,
Bunny and the last kid is a 6 year old Tennessee Walking Horse, Wheeler.
I work the graveyard shift as a pediatric RN at a university teaching
hospital and take care of all kinds of kids with all kinds of big problems.
I was born crafting and as my mom used to like to complain, "Tying strings
around the furniture and making Kiddie Clutter!" I like anything to do with
making stuff but I especially like handwork. I learned to embroider as a small
kid by stitching on those pre-stamped kits. I learned to cross-stitch while a
freshman in college and have been busy ever since. I really took off with it
after finding this newsgroup and attending a festival in Sacramento. I now
have enough stash to be the distributor for several needlework stores!
Besides stitching I'm busy with my horse related activities. I also LOVE
to read......mostly romance novels and some suspense novels. I don't watch
much network TV, which is total garbage in my opinion. I like to watch
Discovery and the Learning Channels plus a lot of stuff on PBS.
I have about 8 WIP's that I can think of offhand but 'cause I work at
night I suffer from CRS so I probably really have about 20! Hey, who's
counting, right?! Whatever project gives me a thrill at that moment is the one
I work on.....or better yet, start!
LOL - I did finish something just a little while ago so I get to post in the
"What I finished in January" group.

Anne :)

My cat, His Feline Majesty Felix the Large and Brilliant :-)
[http://www.impulse.net/~seanette/felixbk.jpg] "helps", too, usually
by lying on directions or stealing some important item such as
scissors or a needle threader. When I took the cushions off the

found scissors, a needle threader, and a crochet hook in there. :-)

My DH thinks that if I worked in a bookstore or craft store, I'd
probably wind up taking my pay in merchandise. He's probably right.

I am Kindred spirit, barbara. I live in Virginia and am 47. Our family is
going through a bit of a tizzy this year. We are a very close family of 5.
My husband is gone for work from last July 2000 to June 2001 to AL., my son
who is 16 in HS and I are staying here waiting in VA. My daughter is in
law school in GA. married to another lawyer and has my first grandgirl baby
who is 1 and my other son is in college as a freshman in CO! It has been a
very difficult year and I am so grateful to have you all for company! My
hubby and I are high school sweethearts and will celebrate our 25th
anniversary this coming June. We have lived all over the world but are
settling in Colorado Springs in the near years. I enjoy intricate
petitpoint work with an occassional cushion to meet a need for decorating.
I like working with silks and cotton mostly on linen and do not enjoy large
tapestry wool work. I work on my needlework every day minus Christmas
holiday. Right now I am working soley on a tapestry rug on 18 count . I
am not even half done but it is hopeful to finish prior to moving in June.
It is the goal ; do not know if I can meet that goal yet! I am not working
on any other large projects until it is done. It is an adaptation of
William Morris-- African Marigold. I must confess that if it were not in
blues and touches of yellow which are my favorite combination, I do not know
if I could continue working on it! It has been a long long journey. My
advise to those of you interested in making an intricate tapestry rug is to
pick colors and a pattern that stirs your blood. It is a long project.
This is my 4th year on it. I would have finished in 2 but designed, beaded
and made a wedding gown plus 7 intricate Christmas stockings plus an
embroidered Kate Greenaway quilt so distractions the last 2 years. It is
fun to read all of your posts on this!!!

Hi,
I've been on rctn for about a year now, I think.

I'm a "transplant" (born/raised in NJ and now living in NC) with 2
wonderful children, one of each, and a great DH. I've been cross
stitching since 1989 or so, however, most of my completed projects have
been gifts (with the exception of stockings for my kids).

I'm currently working on a grandchildren sampler (Grandma's Cookie Fans
from Imaginating) for my MIL. Other WIP - Smokey Mountain Cats. Things
I've yet to start - Needlepoint stocking for DH, Glad Tidings stocking
for me, MLI Angels of Summer, Winter, Autumn, Spring and First Angel of
Light.

I also do latch hook rugs, and decorate cakes (mostly for the kids
b-days!)

Hello again!

I've been hanging out on the NG for about half a year now, and enjoy it
greatly. And find it useful, to boot.

I learned needlework, sewing, crochet, and knitting from my mom and her
mother, starting when I was five or so -- I've got pieces done by my
great-grandmothers -- we like this stuff.

Lately I've been focusing on counted cross stitch and other forms of counted
thread work. I think this might be related to my work project -- I'm a
medievalist, and the book I'm working on (for about 8 years now, with maybe
4 to go) involves transcribing medieval documents -- very precise,
difficult, orderly work, and I think that the counted cross stitch is a kind
of needlework equivalent -- working out the stress of it in another area.

But I do other things too. I'm quilting (badly) a doublewedding ring quilt
for my husband -- it's a wedding present, and is only five years late, ahem.

cheers, Anne B. (to distinguish me from Anne, who's been here longer)

Hello! My name is Jenny (aka The Wren) and I live in north Central Indiana. I
work for the Ag Econ Department at Purdue as a Research Associate. I am 28. My DH
is the assistant manager at a large pork production unit. We have Baby #1 on the
way, with about a month to go. Our household is already home to many furry
children--the current cat count inside is 6-Stealth (f), 17 years, Smoke (f), 8
years, Angus (m), Devon (m) and Thomas (m), all 4 years and Christopher the
polydactyl (m), 2 years. We have six more cats outside in the barn, including a
litter of four kittens--Eeny, Meeny, Miney, and Mo. (I know--really original) We
have two dogs of our own--5 year old lab crosses, and two foster dogs ( who are in
need of good homes, if anyone is looking for a border collie cross or a hound....)
The foster dogs are from a local animal rescue group DH and I volunteer with.

I am Navy brat who did most of my growing up in Andover, KS and still think of it
as "home". Did my BS at Univ of Illinois, worked as a grain buyer for a while,
then regrouped on my career. Spent a bit of time working in a bookstore, which was
my favorite job so far (but it didn't pay squat), then went back to grad school. I
completed a MS in agribusiness about 18 months ago, and was hired by the department
to stay on full time, as long as the soft money holds out.

I learned to crosstitch from my mom when I was just a little squirt--Mom drew a
design on one of Dad's handkerchiefs and I still have it. i think she wanted to
keep me out of her hair whiel she did crewel work.) Also sew garments, but only
once in a while, am working on some PJs for wearing at the hospital. Was a 10-year
4-Her and did all sorts of skilled crafts with that. Didn't really get into XS big
time until after college. Have 5 or 6 WIPs and just started another last night
(grin). I completed a total of 5 x's on MLI's "In the Arms of an Angel". Do I
need to tell you that I am blond and fell in love with this one right after we
confirmed that we were expecting?

I am also a voracious reader, with particualr interest in scifi/fantasy and
mystery, particularly mysteries with a "hook"--like Monica's cross-stitch based
books. I watch very little TV, but when I do, it is likely to be HGTV, A&E or the
History Channel.

Our big goal in life is to eventually farm for ourselves, but it may be a long way
off.

Hope all is well with all of you. Take care and God Bless,
The Wren

I'm Alison (one of the Alison's, I'm the one in Brooklyn NY), 48,
living in Brooklyn, NY. I used to live in California but met my dear
partner Viv on the internet and moved here in 1994 to be with her. We
have a typical Brooklyn apartment, small (600 sq. feet) on the fourth
floor of a walk-up building.

I work at the Brooklyn Public Library, until last year I worked in a
branch library but now I work at the main building at my dream job,
behind the scenes, working with book selection. I get to read
reviews, look at sample copies and galleys, and compile lists for the
branch libraries to use for selecting materials for their branches.

I started embroidering very early, I had stamped nursery rhymes all
stretched in plastic frames (no hoop needed), and I remember working
on those and Daddy doing the french knots. His mother was a great
needlewoman and it is so sad that we had so little time together (she
lived in San Diego California, we lived on Long Island, NY). When she
did visit, she'd teach me something new. She taught me to knit, for
instance. But I wish I'd learned to tat from her. When she died I
was given all her needles and hooks and shuttles (all lost now in one
of many moves). My parents still have afghans she knit and
pillowcases and table linens she embroidered.

I've done numerous crafts over the years, knitting, crocheting,
embroidery, etc. I only seem to do one at a time. My last craft was
tole painting which I really love(d). But it's not something you can
do easily in a small apartment (a lot of setting up and taking down)
and after I developed rheumatoid arthritis, I wanted something I could
do in my comfy chair.

I started back in with stamped embroidery but at the store
(Creativity, how I miss it) they had patterns for counted cross stitch
and I remember seeing a Mirabilia pattern and thinking, "Wow, you can
do THIS??" Then I started reading R.C.T.N., buying magazines, etc.
and the rest is stash history.

We have two cats, one, a fat black boy, Inky, about 7 or so, the
other, a gray "cameo" tabby, very thin and dignified, Buster, 17?
Getting on, anyway. Both of whom leave my stitching strictly alone,
it's great!

Thanks to R.C.T.N. for getting me started on this enthralling hobby!

Hi, my name is Marie and I'm a Long-Time Lurker (tm) and sometimes poster.
I've been reading this group since its inception; I've been reading USENET
groups since at least 1984. I live in Sunnyvale, California. I am a native
Californian (born in Hollister) and have lived in California my whole life.
I just turned 50 <sigh>. My DH and I recently celebrated our 20 year
anniversary. Our DD (from my previous marriage) is almost 23 and in the
Peace Corps. We also have two cats. My DH works for a start-up;I work for a
small consulting company and manage a group of editors and graphic artists.

My mother taught me how to embroider when I was about 7 years old. I still
have my first project--a dresser scarf with a poodle at each end. Those
poodles contain LOTS of French knots. Needless to say, I had lots of
practice doign French knots! In addition to embroider, she taught me how to
sew so I could make clothes for my dolls. When I got older, I started
sewing clothes for myself.

I first tried cross stitch in 1981 and fell in love with it. I also do
hardanger, pulled thread, needlepoint, counted canvaswork, and quilting. I
have also tried crewel and candlewicking. I also love to read, particularly
Star Trek novels and books by Hispanic authors. I watch TV while I stitch.
My favorite shows are ER, Third Watch, CSI, Star Trek Voyager, and
Providence.

WIPs: Mirabilia's Waiting for Ships; Susan Portra's Hopi; Just Nan's Summer
Stroll; Just Nan's Miss Kitty's Dragons; Sekas' Watercolor Dragonflies; a
king-sized quilt using the Turning Tides block

Hello, time for me to join all the delurkers and say a little about
myself. I've been lurking here on and off for over ten years now since
my college days at MIT.

My name is Emily and I have recently moved to Sweden (in Lerum near
Gothenburg) from Chicago to be with be with my SO. He is very
supportive of my crazy addiction to cross-stitch and is helping me put
together a nice little website I hope to have done in the next week.

I have 2 degrees in organic chemistry, but right now I don't work, just
go to Swedish class with the hope of understanding people here
someday. I get extra time for cross stitch :)

I've been doing cross stitch since I was 10, but I didn't become a
serious addict until I started graduate school in 1994. I do mostly
L&L and Mirabilia, 8 completed so far. My current project is Santa of
the Forest on 25 ct Mushroom lugana, over one. I only do one project
at a time, so I work hard to get it done so I can start something new.
My stash is far from big enough, (is there such a thing?) but I got a
gift certificate to Nordic Needle for Christmas, so that will give it a
much needed boost :)

I guess it's time I officially de-lurk and introduce myself.

I'm Melissa from Nashville, Tennessee. I'm 32, divorced, also have 2 cats and a
wonderful DBF of 3 1/2 years who understands and supports my stitching obsession
completely, thank goodness!

I worked for the library for 7 years (where I discovered rctn) before landing my
current job as webmaster for the police department. Since I don't have as much free
time to post, I lurk from time to time, and I have really learned a lot from the
wonderful people here! My most recent discovery is Thread Heaven, and the idea of
crossing the 10th stitch in a long row of stitches, making it easier to count. What
a great idea!

I have been cross-stitching since I was about 14 years old, and also do some
crochet, quilting, beadwork, and general sewing. I have tried to knit,
unsuccessfully, but eventually I would like to try again.

I love to read, some sci-fi, some mysteries, suspense, and gothic romance. My
favorite authors are Dean Koontz, Robin Cook, Anne McCaffrey, J. K. Rowling, Sue
Grafton and now Monica Ferris (thanks rctn!). I also love listening to unabridged
books on tape while I stitch or sew. I love sci-fi movies and tv, and my current
favorite shows are Star Trek (in all its incarnations), Stargate SG-1, The West
Wing, Frasier, ER, and Andromeda. If there isn't anything great on television, and
I don't have something good to listen to on tape, I will usually turn on HGTV.

You have all made me feel much better about the size of my stash and WIPs!

Current WIPs: DragonHeart, Lucien, Merrick, and Cymberleah from Black Swan Designs,
Blackwork Rainbow from Jazzbird Designs, Gothic Castle from Stitch Pics, Nova by
Genny Morrow, Guardian Angel by MLI, Cat Eyes by Nancy Rossi, Dimensions Gold Kits:
Snow Leopard and Sacred Connection, and Fright Night from Lizzie Kate. Oh, and a
baby quilt for a friend's great niece, and a ships quilt for my brother.

If there is anyone else from around the Nashville area who would like to
correspond, please e-mail me. I have one friend who stitches occasionally, but
she's not as obsessed as I am. :)

Hi, my name is Karen and I'm a stitchaholic.

Hi Michael, Hi Karen.....

My wife and I are both 57 and cross stitch as much as possible. We are a
blended family and have 4 children and 5 grandchildren between us. We love
the theater, cross stitching, the opera, cross stitching, the ballet, cross
stitching, Danielle Steele movies, cross stitching, and stash enhancing. We
live in Roseville Minnesota and our favorite LNS is Needleplay. We have
been on the "Heart of Cities" shop tour for the last 3 years and really
enjoyed it.
My favorite designer is Teresa Wentzler and my wife loves Diane Arthurs
patterns. Our projects range from simple to complex and everywhere in
between. I prefer to stick just with cross stitch projects, but my wife
likes to try other types of stitching as well.

If you like bagpipe or Scottish music then you would love to be at my house!
My DH plays the Great Highland bagpipes and the Shuttle pipes. Shuttle
pipes are much quieter and are meant for indoors while Great Highland pipes
are best played outside. A bit too loud for inside!

I'm Kim and have been on again off again for some time. When the shop
really picks up I don't have time to post, but I lurk even when I
can't post. I'm 31, married for almost 10 years now and have two kids.
A boy (4) and girl (8). My DS will start school this fall and I'm
**really** looking forward to it! <G> DH and I had many troubles over
the MIL over the years, and she passed away last year, so things have
smoothed a good bit since then. As a matter of fact, last week was one
of the best of our married lives :) (or should that be life, since it
is the same marriage?) Anyway, I do like to gab a good bit as anyone
who has emailed an order knows ;)
I own an internet Cross Stitch shop and have just expanded again. So I
spend a LOT of time either Cross Stitching, working with cross stitch
supplies, or emailing about stitching!

Hello,
My name is Lauren Goldish (I occasionally post from a different account). I
just started reading r.c.t.n. after a two year hiatus, phew!

Habitat: Syracuse, NY, USA (It's warm here tonight!)
Other occupants: Husband (aack! I can't believe I'm using that word).
Married 4 months. We're 28.
2 of the best cats in town, Romulas and Zaphod. No- I don't have any shame-
I'm restraining myself from attaching photos and spending two paragraphs
describing the amazing felines that grace our presence.
About 45 houseplants.

I work as a db/vba programmer- but boy would I rather play w/ textiles all
day! Want to get into weaving, quilting, spinning, beading, too...

I started stitching three years ago, while I was "interned" (as far as I'm
concerned :) in Scottsdale, AZ, for a summer. While walking home from work,
in July, I stopped by a crafts shop going out of business (not an LNS- but
something that makes Michaels look classy! :) I started w/ cross-stitch
bookmarks, and found this group, and from it have met many wonderful people
(via digital and in person) that have introduced me to lots of other
fantastic stitches.

WIPS include a Frank Lloyd Wright design: Saguaro Forms, and a Hardanger
doily. (Love Hardanger.) I'm about to start a series of blackwork
butterfly bookmarks that will have metallics and glow-in-the-dark thread (I
love the novel.)

Also love gardening, reading subversive fiction, and Ang Lee movies. Go see
"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"!!!!!

Nice to meet y'all,
Lauren

I'm Sharon. I've responded to a number of queries on this ng over the past few years,
but I must confess, I've never properly introduced myself. I'm a homemaker, 39 years
old and I live in Maryland, USA. I'm blessed with a wonderful DH and 13 yr old DD as
well as DD's sweet chestnut horse (he's not allowed in the house, though!). DH is very
supportive of my hobby which has turned into a habit of stitching and stash enhancing.
It wasn't until I began reading this ng that I realized that stashing future projects
and materials was done by most needleworkers. For the longest time I thought it was a
character flaw on my part. LOL! At any rate, DH never forgets to "oooooh and ahhhhh"
when I've finally completed a project. Actually he is the one who found this ng and
Kathleen's brilliant website for me nearly 4 years ago. I've been lurking off and on
ever since. What a wonderful group of people you all are -- this ng as well as
Kathleen's website is a veritable treasure trove of information!

I've been stitching ever since I was a teen -- haven't graduated to more complex
stitches other than basic cross, satin, crewel and embroidery etc. until recently. My
current goal is to complete and decorate an entire wall in my home with reproduction
samplers that I've stitched. It's a perfect outlet which can combine my love of history
with my passion for stitching.

Some of my other hobbies include, first and foremost -- my family; reading; cooking;
music (I play a couple of instruments); being a groom for my daughter's horse and
standing knee-deep in muck while she's competing in horse shows (ok, well, I could do
w/o the muck, but it goes with the territory!).

Hello

I'm Karen number 1167 it seems around here! I am originally from Ottawa Canada,
but now reside in the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia. 26 years, no children
married for almost 4 years to DH who loves that I have found something to do to
keep me busy in this not so city life we have here. I work part-time as a
switchboard operator.

We have two chinchillas, mother and daughter named Casey and Houdini (for her cage
escaping tricks).

I have been cross-stitching for a couple of years now, and have learned to minimize
the the stitchy stuff I give away since I find the effort put in is not always
appreciated.

I guess that is all for now...

Hi there,

My name is Sandra and i'm 30 years old. Recently married to Jacco (last
October). We've been together for 5 years now. We live in Naaldwijk The
Netherlands. No children yet.

I've been reading this newsgroup since beginning of this year. It's fun to
read and contains lot of info that comes in handy.

My mother-in-law learned me to do x-stitch in Januari 1999 while i was home
due to stress(work related-so i quit my job). Always wanted to do x-stitch
but never been encouraged to do so and nobody to teach me.

My husband is the sweetest guy on this planet and is very supportive what
ever i do. Jacco doesn't mind me not working so i don't . So instead of
working i'm taking sewing lessons and i'm going all the way, meaning
starting at the bottom till i get my teaching degree this will take 4 years.
Jacco sees this as an investment in us both and maybe later on it will pay
off. Anyway so long i'm happy he's happy. Isn't he the best!!

So my days are filled with home cleaning, sewing, x-stitch and listining to
music. Like listining to hard rock, classic, blues and jazz. So i got music
for every mood i will be in.

Got lots of books about needlecraft and i'm determent to learn as many
technics as possible. With the help of my mother-in-law and this newsgroup
as a refference. Even i don't work the days never seem long enough.

I don't have a website but Jacco do follow
http://home.kabelfoon.nl/~jaccobu/index.htm and enter a world of fractal
art. Jacco's site is in English. Jacco updated his site last night after
working on a new version for months so come in and enjoy it's fun and a
feast for the eyes.

Kind regards
Sandra

Hi I'm Carol-Ann,now living in London England but was brought up, educated and
married at 19 in the very beautiful city of Dublin, Ireland. That was 35 years
ago. We came to London for "2 years " and never left.
My 3 children are all married now. DD has 2 boys and a girl, number 1 son has 2
boys and a girl and is living in Israel and number 2 son has just had his first
baby, Sean. He and his family are also going off to live in Israel on 5th March
2001 and boy I'm not coping with it at all well this time.
My wonderful daughter lives just round the corner so I see her virtually every
day.
I'm a Brown Owl which is a leader of a Brownie pack of 24 girls 7 - 10 yrs. We
meet each Monday. I've been with this pack for 35 years and just love it.
I've been stitching since a child. Then it was embroidery on 36" tablecloths
for afternoon tea!. I've also always knitted.
Now I x stitch, knit, needlepoint, latchhook, hardanger, crochet, tapestry.
I have at least one of each of the above on the go all the time.
As far as stash goes, I reckon I could enter the Olympics with hope of winning
a medal.
I make all my own greetings cards, either xstitch or rubber stamping.
I have a database with 6000 patterns from English mags.
I take 11 mags a month.
Boy is this confession good for the soul:)
I do enjoy rctn and everyone who writes.

Hi - I'm another Sharon - (most people call me Sha) I'm mostly a lurker,
but come here when I need some wisdom. I live in Canada in the
Maritimes (eastern part) - I have a birthday next month - oh my gawd!!
am I really going to be 55?? Where did the time go? We live in the
country now that hubby is retired and I love it all except for the bugs,
hate bugs. We have 3 girls, one in Toronto, one in Atlanta and another
in Chicago - four 'perfect' grandchildren that we don't get to see but
once a year sadly. Other members of the family - Dalton (12 1/2 yr. old
big fat Dachshund), Clancy (5 yr. old gentle giant Heinz 57 from the
shelter), George (the Brat Cat who has a square butt and busted tail and
who runs this joint), Mattie (6 - I think - yr. old standard-bred racing
horse) and Bart, Mattie's boyfriend (she likes older 'men') who is 26
(not ours tho' DH looks after him - saved from the glue factory by his
owner).

We love animals (no kidding??), my DH is into horse racing - my favorite
things are cooking, reading, cross-stitch, quilting and collecting
elephants, roosters, cross-stitch charts and fabric. I cannot imagine
ever being bored what with all the wonderful things to do in my stash
room alone. :-)

So that's me in a nutshell. How do you do?

Hi - I'm the other other Sharon. I currently live in So. Il. although
I would like to return to Florida someday, but not Ca. where
I am originally from (too many earthquakes). I am married (2nd time)
for 6 years this march and have a 4 yo dd and 4 mo dd. I started stitchin'
when I was in a kindergarden group (5 I think) and am now 33ish. Only
problem is I had to take off 23 years inbetween!!!!

I have a 10 yo dd who lives in Detroit with her dad ( big story) and
don't get to visit her or have her visit because her dad just won't
put her on the plane. Lawyers aside, I think right now it is the best
as she has only lived there one year and is still trying the back and
forth thing with us. Anywhoo....

I am trying to do new stitches this year and I have to say that
this group sometimes saves my sanity. Just when I think my problems
are going to eat me up, one of you- really - has a problem and it helps
to center me. Thanks for sharing your pain (lol).

Wips include: airplane sampler for my 4 yo dd,
Silken Wings Cardnial w/dogwoods, Mill Hill Beaded Pond kit,
and I have to start the wedding sampler for our bestest friend
(who has given his girlfriend a ring but no date so I don't know
how long I have to work on it!)

Hello all and welcome to all the delurkers. My name is George and I am
a founding memeber of the Chart Collectors Chocoholics Society. I have
been mostly lurking here on the newsgroup for the last year, but used
to have time to read and post more. I have just turned 60 and have been
doing some sort of needlecraft for 40+ years. Dicovered cross stitch a
while ago and have been doing it ever since. I am married and have two
sons, two DILs who I think ogf as duaghters and four wonderful
grandchildren. I live in Hopkinton, Massachusetts (where the Boston
Marathon starts) with my DW. We also have a cottage in Ogunquit, Maine
where we spend almost every weekend and hopefully even more time
dutring the summer. I do not get to stitch as much as I would like, and
am working on a birth sampler for my granddaughter. I also have a
couple of TW's started, some MLI's, and a few other things.

I'm Jill... I live in Northern California. I've been doing needlepoint since
I was a little girl... I started cross stitching in high school, but since
the incident with the club footed teddy bear (the horror!) I haven't done
much of that. I also rubberstamp and crochet. Fiber arts are mostly my
winter hobby as it is just too warm in the summer to work on an afghan.

I'm 32 and married. I work from home as the Operations Manager for a small
general contracting firm. I'm super involved with the Junior League and love
it.

Currently I am about 2.5" from completing a needlepointed draft blocker I
designed featuring our wonderfully long last name. I've designed my next
canvas which will be a cushion for a blanket chest. The design is random
pears with a large swirly S in the center. I will be doing ecru on ecru in
two different sizes (#3 and #5) in a damask fashion.

Okay here goes. I'm Anita, originally from Illinois, but bounced around
quite a bit over the years. Currently I'm in Germany with my DH who is US
Air Force. We've been in Europe since shortly after our marriage almost 10
years ago and we have quite enjoyed our time here and in East Anglia.
(Pat's posts and website make me homesick. :) ) I'm 35 and have known my
DH for 20 years now. (That hardly seems possible, but the yearbooks say
that is the truth.)
I have a DS, 9 years old, who has ADHHHHHD and a DD, 5 years old. My son is
the reason I got back into cross stitch after taking a break from it for a
while. I have been doing some kind of needlework since I was 5 years old.
Used to do hankies with pictures drawn in ink and then filled in with
whatever stitches I decided on, did the linen calendar embellishment where
you use satin stitch and other stitches to pick out details on a preprinted
calendar, and can knit, crochet, embroider, sew some clothing, dabble in
needlepoint and of course do counted cross-stitch. My mom wants to get back
into Swedish huck work so I may learn to do that so that I can understand
her when she talks about it. Some day I may even get up the courage to try
to tat with the shuttles I have in my stash. My aunts all tell me how my
great-grandmother did such beautiful work but none of them had the patience
to learn from her. Now they all regret it and are trying to learn from each
other and books.

I started XS while in college. It looked like something fairly easy to do
and wouldn't take up much space. (Yeah, right!) Bought a book of dog
patterns to do some for my family and corrupted (taught ) my roommate to do
XS. She took off running and stitched circles around me from the start.
After graduation, money was tight so I gave up on XS for a while until I got
married and was expecting my first child. I knitted blankets and hoods and
such for him. After he was born, I tried to knit for my SIL who was
expecting. My DS thought that it was great fun to catch the needles or pull
the yarn and twist himself into a pile of it or to simply lay on my lap when
I tried to knit. then I remembered that XS was easier to pick up and put
down without giving him so much sport.
Occasionally he helps do a few stitches and has even made a start on a
freestyle piece of his own. Maybe someday he will be interested in trying
it again. he does cherish the things I make for him and will often tell me
it is time to make something for him. My DD is my stitching buddy already.
She has started building her own stash in an old aluminum cookie tin. She
has lots of floss and some Aida of her won as well as plastic canvas in lots
of shapes and Needloft yarns in bright, shimmery colors for stitching on the
PC. Her grandma keeps buying that stash and maybe she will get that heart
DD has been working on for a Christmas present this year. My DD has made
several freestyle embroidery blankets for her Barbies and is trying to see
how to do the X's like Mom does. She made a PC coaster for me last year as
her first big completed project. Evenings often find us both stitching away
as the guys are playing video or computer games.
We don't have TV hooked up either through cable or satellite and no one here
even misses it. We have an extensive video and DVD collection and sometimes
get tapes from the States when there is something we just have to see from
network TV. I do like some of the things from A&E that my mom sends to us.
Besides the electronic distractions I read, anything and everything. Lots
of scifi/fantasy, mysteries (Hi Monica), histories, advice for helping my
ADHD child to learn, and anything that will sit still long enough to be
read. My DD is picking up on that already and has started her own book
collection. Every night she reads a little to us, even if it is a story she
has picked to be read to her. She can't help herself from just jumping in
and reading if I start to slow down. :)

Cross-stitch is my therapy and sanity preserver when life gets rough. I
need it remind myself that I can actually finish something. Somedays it is
an uphill battle to get my son to focus on anything. He can get lost
between the right sock and the left sock, although he is getting better and
can actually concentrate in school. He has taught me so much about patience
and taking thins in easy steps. I can see thing overall pattern, but I have
learned to break it down into three steps at a time so that he doesn't get
too distracted. It is amazing the things we take for granted that everyone
will know or understand automatically.
Anyway, I have been lurking here off and on for a little over 3 years and
how learned so much from everyone here. I look for Trish's posts before I
start drinking my tea :) and feel comfortable stashing that pattern that
just speaks to me even though I won't get around to it any time soon.
Thanks for being there everyone.

Anita, in Germany where the kids have gone off to bed and the house is very
quiet.

I'm the other Coleen. I read this newsgroup more than I post and know
Coleen George has been posting for a long time. I'm originally from West
Virginia, but after 20 years of living in Dallas, now reside in Tucson
Arizona. My mother taught me to embroider and I've been doing some form
of needlework since I was 12.

I have a husband who dresses up like a cowboy and competes in shooting
matches with period firearms. Even has me working on a period prairie
dress. Wonder how many of us are involved in some sort of reenanctment
hobby, be it medieval or mid 1800's?

I have a 5 year old daughter and a cat who both like to watch me
crossstitch but mostly just play with the thread.

*sighs*

Well, since it looks like I am, indeed, back for good...here goes.

My name is Alayna, I am 22 and live in Eugene, Oregon. Married to a wonderful
man who is now a commercial truck driver. Married almost four years now, have
a wonderful little boy who is just over two. Also have a 13 year old stepson
who lives with us. I am a SAHM, but I babysit full time now, the daughter of a
co worker of my DH.

Been stitching off and on since I was eleven, steadily since I was 18 or so.
Never touched linen, probably never will, but I have recently started playing a
little with some specialty fibers (Kreineks and Rayons mostly). I adore MLI
and TW, but rarely have the time and money to put into such a project. I did
do a MLI for my MIL, (whom I obviously love very much! :) ) Angel of Grace,
but so far that is the only one I have done. I am currently working on some
smallish stuff for an auction some friends are involved with to raise money for
a little boy with brain cancer :(. Other than that, not much, but...gosh, it is
good to be back!
