Now, (as the newscasters insist on saying,) the Friends is a very well-to-do
group who are pretty knowledgeable. The first year I gave them my work
mounted but unframed; the second time also, and they have a framer who
contributes matting and framing. I would guess that the retail price on the
framing that was done was in the neighborhood of $180.00, but I never asked.
Last year, having a new mat cutter that I will eventually learn to use well,
I matted the pieces.
Choose your charity event and location. If you know that there are burning
bucks in the pockets, price your work to fit. The minimum acceptable bid on
any of my things, after the first year, is $500.00 and higher. I would
think a box with needlepoint lid should have a minimum of at *least*
$150.00. Also, look in the shops and see what things like that are going
for, and I don't mean stuff from China, I mean in the specialty boutiques.
That is, after all, what you are doing.
Most of all, want to do whatever it is that you are going to contribute, so
that it doesn't get to be an onerous chore, and want to give it to whatever
group you are making the contribution to, so that whatever it fetches, you
will have made a difference.
(This year, according to the Gala chair, several people have asked if I have
contributed another piece. Makes me feel needed when I want to scream at
the stupid thing. ;-} )
Absolutely. Our work is worth its price.
I did a Bothy Threads needlepoint of an L S Lowry painting for my
mother's birthday last year. It was about 18" x 12", matted and framed.
DH took out insurance on it for me when he posted it; I didn't know what
to value it at, but was going to add the cost of the kit (about £50) and
the cost of the frame (£35 - I mentioned in another thread that he was
cheap!!), and put that down. DH and Mum went mad at me, and insisted I
put at least £250. I hadn't even thought of charging for my work....
As Mum said, 'If it got lost in the post, how much would we have to pay
to buy a replacement?' I had never considered that :}
