Not me, but last summer, my DH had to take penicillan for a infected
cyst. After several days he broke out in a case of hives which started
in his scalp and slowly moved down his body. Benadryl helped a bit.
And he immediately stopped taking the meds, since, like you, the hives
indicated a bad reaction to the penicillan. Took over a week for the
hives to clear up completely.
Ironically, his psoriasis which had plagued him since 1992 also
disappeared, even though it is not supposed to respond to antibiotics.
The only thing we can figure is that the hive response triggered
something in his system - almost like a reset button - which finally
allowed his skin to stop the over production of skin cells.

Deb,
I'll suffer in common with you. I'm now on a total of 3 steroid
medications and an anti-itch to try to get a full body hives reaction
under control.... argh!!!!! The worst ones are on the scalp since
even combing my hair (while it does scratch the itch) only seems to
make them worse and hurt more! The other worst part is that we can't
pinpoint the cause of the reaction other than it being something in my
MIL's house! (Now how's that for an excuse?.... hmmmm, I'll have to
remember that! <grin> ) That and no time off work for me, the visit
to MIL was the time off!

Ooh Deb,
I suffer from the same, mine are induced by stress. I was put on a
combo of zyrtec and pepcid which seemed to work to take away the
itchiness which worked pretty well for me. Hope your feeling better
soon.

I've also had some bad reactions to dental epinephrine and wound up in
the emergency room twice. This leads me to tell you to please keep
some Benadryl or Zyrtec or similar allergy reaction medication with
you at all times - especially if you are trying new meds - you don't
want to have another reaction and wind up in the ER like I did!
Hope you're feeling better!

Hey Deb! (and others so blessed as to be allergic to penicillin)....
You might be careful in the future about taking any antibiotics from the
cephalosporin family eg: Keflex, etc. There is a known cross-allergy between the
two

When I developed an allergy to sulfa, I had the head-to-toe itch for
days! It's the worst.
A word of caution regarding penicillin (and other drug) allergies -
DON'T EVEN HANDLE THE DRUGS! A friend of mine with an allergy to
penicillins was dispensing amoxicillin for her child (you remember the
icky pink liquid...), and got a drop on her that lead to an antiphalatic
reaction. Be safe, and (I repeat) don't touch any penicillin-type drug!!
