Sabrina suggested I look at having chalks for enhancing paper work on
layouts. I have also seen layouts online with chalk used beautifully
for this.
My question is (remember, please, I'm the newbie from NZ) are the
chalks the ordinary blackboard type chalk or the artists' art/pastel
type chalk?

RSVP and TIA

No, they aren't chalkboard chalks and I'm not sure they are the pastel art
chalks either. I'd look for them with the scrapbook supplies. You want to be
sure they are acid free and archival.

These are the ones I use

http://store.yahoo.com/scrapbook-dot-com/decchallar.html

They are a softer chalk than chalkboard chalk.

I use these too and I have so much fun with them. Really adds a lot of
dimension with the smallest little swipes to a die cut or page.

I have the chalks from Stampn Up. I rarely use them because I'm not satisfied
with the outcome of my work. I'm just not as artistically talented as some of
the others on the group. :op

I just ordered the decorator chalks and should have them next week.

Does anyone use a fixative on them when scrapbooking and/or card making.
Sometimes I've read yes, sometimes no. If so, what stuff do you use?

I've never used anything like that on them and I've never had trouble with
smudging or smearing. JME.

My understanding is that if you take a plain piece of paper and lay it over
the chalked area and just rub it with your hand, the excess chalk will come
off on the paper and it "sets" the chalk.

RedPen , They are chalks made especially for this type of art. They
come in a plastic ,compact like box and are ..well like the eye shadow
little 'cakes's of chalk. You use an applicator or a q-tip to apply. It
is amazing how they can add 'life' to your pieces. I took a class at a
LSS once and wea so pased with how many things you can do with them. Die
cuts
are the best things to chalk after paperpieces.

I got mine at Wal-Mart. They come in round containers and the chalks look
like pieces of pie. That's what I think they also sell at our LSS. They
stack together really nicely :)

I have those too, Tabitha, but DD is eyeballing them and would like her own.
They also sell them on QVC and it comes with an extra compartment to keep
the small cotton balls. I also have some chalks that I bought at Memories
Expo and it comes in a long, flat box and the chalk looks a little bit like
sticks of Dentyne.

I have that set! I think they're made by EK Success. They're cool, because
you can take the wedge out and write with it like a regular piece of chalk
as well as using applicators. Also, some places sell the individual trays,
so if you have a color family you use a lot of, you don't have to replace
your whole set.

That's what I've always found too. I think I do remember something in a mag
about using fixative, but then again, we all know that the mags just want to
make things more complicated and make you buy more product. ;) <steps down

Those are the EK ones.

BTW, does anyone else here think that EK is becoming the Microsoft of
scrapbooking? Now they own Herma!

Oh! That's a great idea!!! I could have done that on my chalkboard on the
preschool layout!

Wellllll, except for the fact that EK's stuff actually works! And that
they're buying competitors instead of creating their own version of the
competitor's item that doesn't work nearly as well and then package it with
their other stuff so as to drive the competitor out of business . . .

I with you on that one --- but I did see a hint on DYI - the lady said
when using chalk to --- to apply the chalk "starting "OFF" the edge
of the paper- towards the paper" - so the first "hit on the edge is
darker" and as you go further in the chalk becomes lighter as there is
less on the applicator and in most case else where to us a circular
motion.

Start easy Susan. I did a cherry recipe layout and I had green cherry with
leaves diecuts. I was going to paper piece the cherries, but then decided
to try coloring the whole cherry with some chalk. Turned out really nice I
think. I've also done a lot of chalking on the edges only. I haven't tried
any indepth creative chalking, but I'm working my way up. I've also seen
some online chalking demos that some day I'll try.
