Congratulations on starting your first page.

I took a paper tearing class at a Scrapbook Expo this past spring. It really is
easy to do. With most paper, if you tear it one way you will get a bit of a
white edge on it. If you tear the other way you will not. (one is toward you
the other away from you and I don't remember which is which). The important
thing would be to tear it all the same way for the same layout. On the edges
that showed the white, we used the "brush" end of a scroll and brush zig pen in
a complementary color to "paint" those edges. Use the side (not the tip) of
the brush tip to do this. Or you can leave the white edge if you like it that
way.

I hope this description makes sense. A visual would be much easier than the
verbal instruction.

if you have the pretty side of the paper up and the white side facing down,
and tear it upward, the white scar will show on top. For cardstock, the
scar will be the same color, but it will be ontop. If you tear downward,
the scar will be underneath. I usually like it to show.

I'm with Cozy. I like the 'scar' to show, after all the time I spent
tearing I want to see something for my efforts!! This is one of my fave
techniques. Paper Patch has print paper that is solid cardstock on the
other side that tears so cool - the edge is the matching solid color to the
print!!

My sister gave me a book that I finally looked over yesterday. They said to
make a 'deckle' look with your paper, to use a paintbrush to 'paint' a line
of water on your paper right where you want it to tear. Saturate the paper.
Then pull the paper apart. It said you could also take the entire sheet of
paper and put it in the sink with water, let it sit for a minute then hang
to get rid of the excess for a few minutes. Then pull it apart. I haven't
tried either method. I usually wet a line and tear it by pulling one side
up, and holding the other side down. Never by pulling it apart. (on my
list of things to try today...)

I did two pages yesterday, and I 'dry' tore my paper. I usually wet it a
bit. The scarring was larger, so I used a brown chalk on that part. The
cardstock is white. I still can't figure out what to call the pages, or how
to journal them. LOL This is the layout that's been sitting on my desk for
3 weeks now. At least I finally got it all glued together.

I like the look of wetting it and pulling it apart with mulberry paper, but
like plain tearing for the rest. I would like to have one of those
brushpens that you fill with water for that.

Once again, q-tips or eyeshadow applicators will work for this, too. Or a
regular soft bristle pointed paint brush with a cup of water!

Are you sure it was chalks? I recently saw someone using the water color
pencils and then using the brush on them for a waterpaint look.

using her chalk tray just like it was a kid with watercolors. then when she
painted, it looked like watercolor!

I wonder if it was a special chalk? I hate it when they don't tell you
EXACTLY what they are using and leave you guessing. If you get DIY be
sure to watch the show CRAFTS that will come on tonight right before
Scrapbooking. Right after the part on painting tile, they go into stamps
and cards. There is one part where she is using special chalk pencils
that do what you are talking about. Seems like the name of the maker of
them was something like Ewing, but I could be having a brain lapse and be
wrong about htat!

she was using the stampendous decorating chalks, just like we all have! it
was the exact same tray i have...
chalk pencils sound like fun, but i'm betting just my chalks or watercolor
pencils would do the trick for the same effect. i don't have diy, so i'll
have to imagine.

They're not that expensive. I bought a set on sale for just a few
dollars. Cheaper than kids pencil crayons. :o)

way you are supposed to tear the paper? <<

I've done this for my journal writing for my before and after pics of my
rhinoplasty. I found it easiest by tearing the paper upwards towards you, as
oppose to just across. Doing it upwards towards you (I suppose it depends on
the paper though-I used reg card stock) it gives more of the effect of tearing.
