Prayers Needed

Prayers are needed for my brother, Corky. He had a stroke on Thanksgiving
and has been staying with me. Yesterday he started having trouble breathing
and finally let me call an ambulance to take him back to the hospital. He
has blood clots in both lungs and is in ICU at Deaconess Hospital. They told
us last night if we had not got him there when we did he would have been
gone by today.

Wow! Prayers going up!
This isn't necessarily a hopeless situation--my brother's lungs were
FULL of blood clots a few years ago (turns out he has something called
Factor V Leiden that causes clots in the lower legs that rise up to
the lungs)--for the longest time they thought he had pneumonia until my
SIL demanded an MRI. Once discovered they put him on blood thinners and
he was touch and go for about a week, but all the clots dissolved and he
was fine. He has to take the blood thinners for the rest of his life
now, and wear those socks that are really tight and force your blood to
circulate, but overall his life is the way it was before.

Thanks for all the prayers and support. I thought I would give you an
update.
He's still in the hospital. Blood clots in his lungs. They have him on blood
thinner, but it will take a while to get it regulated.
He has limited use of his right leg and some issues with his right hand. The
vision still comes and goes as far as blurring and double. They are going to
start him in rehab in three days, I'm not sure where they plan to move him,
but he's still not able to care for himself or stay alone yet.
He's only 51 years old, retired from the air force, never married and has no
children, just 8 siblings (4 older sisters who boss him around.)
They said he has an extra enzyme in his blood that causes clotting, and that
it is hereditary and all of his siblings need to be tested. Our mom had her
first stroke at age 59 and died at 70 all of a sudden. The dr said it was
her heart, but we didn't want or need an autopsy - all we knew was that she
was gone. Now we are wondering if she had this enzyme issue. Our dad is 83
and still kicking along.
I have no health ins, but plan to call the dr to see about the cost of the
test after the first of the year.

This is good news Sandy. I'm glad to hear that he's improving, ever so
slowly, and that they've figured out the problem. You and of your
siblings really should get tested. I know it's not easy being w/out
the ins though. Take care and know that prayers are still going out
for Corky, you and the rest of the family.
