I have a question on which I can't seem to find any discussion.

I have many photographs, some dating to the mid 1800's. I would like to
document the details on the back of the photo. However, I can't take
the chance that the ink may contain any acid or will in any way
compromise the photo.

Anyone have any ideas?

They have special pencils that can be used on photos. I know exactly what
you mean. My grandmother wrote on the back of some of her old photos that
were her mothers in the early 70's and I can already see the ink on the
front as it bled through. But the ones that her mother wrote on in pencil
are just fine. I buy mine from Creative Memory, but they sell them at most
scrapbook stores.
