Powdered Pearls are pearlescent powered mica. The only difference
between Powdered Pearls and the other brands are Powdered Pearls are
completely skin safe, less expensive and come in more colors.
HOW TO MIX WITH GUM ARABIC
Use FOUR parts Powdered Pearls to ONE part gum arabic.. Mix the two
powders together, then add drops of water, stirring after each one. It
may take a minute or two for the gum arabic to become saturated with
water, so be patient. Paint is the right consistency when YOU are
satisfied with it. Thin for a shimmer wash, thicker for complete
coverage. and medium for sponging.
WHAT DO YOU DO WITH POWDERED PEARLS?
Mix them with the gum Arabic for a pure wash of pearlesence.
Mix them with transparent water colors to add a glow to the watercolor
color.
Don't throw away any leftover color, it can be re wet like watercolors
and will work just as it was just mixed. I keep several of those
inexpensive water color mixing wells with a complete set of Powdered
Pearls and gum arabic. They are dried like pans of watercolor and are
always ready for a drop of water to be set to go.
Brush or rub them on dry Lightly spray the area with the Powdered Pearls
with a good brand of fixative. Krylon is a very good choice.
Use them with stamps on sealing wax. Mix with the sealing wax for a
whole new color. Swirled marble patterns are beautiful. Use the Powdered
Pearls as a release agent in place of embossing fluid or ink.
Use Miracle tape for a border of pure shine. Subtle and classy.
Mix them with embossing powders for extra punch. Gold or Silver with the
dark colors of EP are especially dynamic.
Mix with polymer clay while pliable or brush on after it's baked. I
often use poly clay (Fimo, Sculpy) as imitation sealing wax or as beads
for use on books and boxes. You can also stamp in polymer clay, bake and
use the Powdered Pearls. Be sure to seal. The sun face stamps with gold
Powdered Pearls make very nice pendants or package add ons for special
gifts, to your secret pal, perhaps?
Sprinkle some powder on an old stamp pad and then re-ink. Beautiful!!
Mix with Perfect Paper Adhesive or Mod Podge for a glimmer finish. I
have tried other thin bodied white or clear craft glues with good
success. You may also use acrylic gel or medium.
Mix gold Powdered Pearls with just enough clear embossing powder to make
it stick and sprinkle over black and brown mottled background for a
great faux tortoise shell. Powdered Pearls don't need fixative when
mixed with embossing powder or glues. Sponging works very well to make
the mottled black and browns background.
Use dye re-inkers and make matching pearl colors for your inkpads.
Thin the paint you make with the gum arabic and Powdered Pearls down to
a ink consistency and use it in a dip pen for calligraphy. The 'old
fashioned' dip type pens like Hunt work the best. Stop working and clean
out your pin nib frequently. Any dried or caked on Powdered Pearls will
soap right off with warm water, and a short wait. A soft brush like a
child's toothbrush will get any stubborn spots.
Powdered Pearls powders also mix well in your paste mixture for making
paste papers.
Use Powdered Pearls with your markers. Color a bit of your favorite
marker on to a non porous surface, pick up some Pearls on the tip if
your marker and mix back in the puddle to mix, then use. The tip cleans
up easily with a damp tissue.
Use thin mixes of Powdered Pearls and gum arabic to mix and wet your
watercolor pencils and water colorcrayons instead of plain water.
Stamp with clear embossing ink, then dust Powdered Pearls over the
image, shake off just like you were using embossing powder. Use a soft
brush to remove excess Pearls. . No heat needed. Use a light sealer if
desired. Create a rainbow effect by dusting the desired colors of pearls
in random places. Save the excess and use it on another project for a
more subtle background effect. You also might try spray a light coating
of SPRAY WEBBING on top. A really striking effect is to use ultra thick
embossing power on top of the Pearls and/or spray webbing. There are
several brands of ultra thick embossing enamels on the market. You can
also use regular clear embossing powder, just apply several coats.
Sponging is one of the most dramatic uses of pearlescent pigments.
Coarse sponges on black paper is just breathtaking! Mix colors on the
page. Turquoise,. silver, jade and copper are particular favorites.
Use them with foil glue. Put your dimensional foil glue where you want
it, let it dry for the suggested time on the label With your finger or a
q-tip, rub the powder over the glue. Be generous, you can tap off the
extra and save just like your embossing powder. A light mist of fixative
is needed.
Either dust your skeletonized leaves with the Pearls or mix it to
watercolor consistency and 'dry' brush it over the surface, letting it
catch on the raised veins. You don't need a fixative if you used gum
arabic in mixing your fluid color. Mist with fixative if you have dusted
the dry powder.
Use a Dove or other blender with the Pearls. Sprinkle out a tiny bit of
Pearls on a non absorbent palette, then lightly touch the end of the
blender to the powder. Transfer this to your project and ‘paint’ with it
as you would any marker. To be on the safe side, seal lightly.
Powdered Pearls work wonderfully with heat sensitive adhesive embossing
powder.
No sealer needed.
Another fun way to use Powdered Pearls is on the sticky side of a Wonder
Sheet, Xyron Sheet or other similar products. Use them sprinkled in and
among gold leaf flakes or by themselves. You can also use sticker paper
by the sheet and apply the Pearls here and there, then dust off. A
really brilliant background.
If you should have a problem with any of the colors not mixing well with
water and gum arabic, add a tiny drop of regular liquid dish washing
detergent, Windex or other surfactant. Then mix again. You can also
place the Pearl powder, gum arabic, dish washing liquid and a few drops
of water in a small, clean empty jar (like an EP jar) cap tightly, then
shake very vigorously. Add more water by drops if needed. Go slowly, you
can always add more water. If you get it too wet, leave the lid off for
several hours for the excess water to evaporate. Using distilled water
sometimes helps, too.

Pearlescent Pizazz-Techniques for Mat or Paper Decoration using
Pearlescent Inks
1) Resists:
* w/crayons heated heat gun- spray w/PI, dry, repeat
*white ink and powder- paint wet on wet w/PI
*miskit- splatter and throw, dry-then pour and tilt PI, can repeat
*salt- wet mat w/sponge, place salt, spray w/PI
2) Masking:
*Cut out paper shapes and place on top of mat- spray or spatter w/PI,
dry, repeat but move shapes, repeat
*miskit mask- stamp on mat with ink and emboss, paint over image shape
w/miskit, sponge or spray PI, dry, remove miskit-paint or color
intensely the stamped shapes.
3) Stamping:
*glass palette-place PI on glass surface and stamp into pigment w/large
stamp image, stamp onto mat, dry, repeat w/new color.
*sponge stamp- use various sponges to apply PI to mat, dry between color
changes
*brayer w/string- tie string around brayer and roll in PI on glass
palette, repeat w/new colors
*PI x’s2- apply PI to mat surface, dry, stamp PI on top of mat surface
Draw w/metallic markers, pens, or pencils around PI shapes.
Scribble w/metallic markers, pens or pencils.
Paint w/ watercolors or dye based inks in areas to enhance positive or
negative shapes.

I couldn't find gum arabic anywhere but I found a product called Binder from
Biblical Impressions. I added it to the Powdered Pearls and then used them
with acrylic paints from a paint-by-number kit. The picture came out
wonderfully shiny. (I think paint-by-number is a larger version of rubber
stamping!)
I've been wanting to use my pearls instead of just looking at the pretty
jars. Now I have a more use for them!
