I've seen some of the stuff done with Pearl Ex (and other mica powder
products) and think it's just beautiful...

How all can I use it? I'm thinking of getting a set of the Pearl Ex
powders, and wonder what all I can do with it. I love the effect, but
really have very little clue on usage. I've got a TON of rubber
stamps, both pigment and dye pads in lots of colors, Dauber Duos,
embossing powders (just the basic colors: clear, black, gold, silver
and pearl), clear embossing ink (on a pad AND in a bottle), Versamark
(pad and pen), an embossing heat gun, some daubers (for
application)...what all can I do, without breaking the bank (the
powders themselves are a little pricey, but I *want* them, darn it!)
and having to buy a whole bunch of NEW supplies to use them with??
I've also got tons of different types of adhesives/glues, and those
sorts of products, since I'm a scrapbooker, too (and am even further
in debt with THAT hobby...giggle). I've got lots of supplies already,
but I'm ready to try something new.

Any and all suggestions/hints/tips/ideas will be appreciated! Plus,
if anyone knows of some great "how-to" websites for using the mica
powders, I'm up for some online reading.

Thanks for any and all help,

What to do with mica  powders:

 1.  use your dove blender pen to pick up powders to color in your images...
black embossed images on black cs is  very dramatic!!

2. mix with water and gum arabic for your own water color pallet!
save your laminate sheet backings or sticker sheet backings for
your pallet... once dried ... not all is lost! just use a wet paint brush
and you can rehydrate your paints again!!     nothing goes to waste!

3.     mix a little glycerin and mica powders to create another type of  paint

4. stamp with any kind of pigmented ink... and then dust powder over it.....
really great with versa mark or clear embossing ink!
make use of your stencils for this too! or make your own stencils
and swipe on your inks over it... creating great backgrounds!

5.  mix with PPA perfect paper adheasive .. for making paste papers!
      or just paint :)

6. put powders in your utee creations!!

7. use powders in your fimo to create great colored clay ! or on top as a
rub!!

8. mix into clear embossing powder to create custom colored EP's!!!

Embossing powders:  Mix 1/4 tsp. or less of Faerie Dust with 1 tsp. clear
embossing powder (EP).  You can mix  smaller amounts--just keep the ratio
between 1:4 and 1:8).  The interference colors especially look great over
black pigment ink.  Scarab Red is a duo color (burgundy and teal).  Scarab
Red/Clear EP embossed over black pigment ink results in a soft black image
with just a hint of burgundy.  Turn the card slightly and the image turns to
a gorgeous dark teal.  Over burgundy pigment ink, the embossed image is
burgundy.  Turn the card slightly and it is a lighter shade of teal.  You
can add 1/2 tsp. of ultra-fine glitter to any FD/EP mixture for a glittery
image--think of the possibilities!!  For this technique, use an equal amount
of Faerie Dust and clear EP.  Using this results in an unevenly embossed
image, but heat the image long enough for the EP to melt back into the
cardstock and the resulting image is beautiful.

9.     add mica powders to your diamond glaze. re inker accetate
pieces for added glitz!

10.    I added powders to white acrylic paint and got something closer
to luminere.. but still not the same ;(   but very close!!

a clear flow medium was even better... black acrylic paint was
great with the irridecent colors..

11. with dry powder and a paint brush  color images stamped on laminate film , color on the
sticky side.

12. rub some on your hot glue seals!!

13. with a paint brush and some acrylic varnish dip into your powders and
paint ... the varnish makes the colors POP! and
it seals them in as well... and its shiny when dry

14.  mix powder in water spritz bottle with lots of water
to make a glittery spray!! then spray over your stamped art work
for a great shimmer!

15. rub onto sanded shrink plastic for a great background… seal with hair spray

       before shrinking.

16,  dipp stipple brush in laquer of some kind and then powders and stipple a background

17.    cover wooden beads with adheasive then dust with powders and seal with hairspray

18 . paint with them over markers , colored pencils etc.

19.     with laquer on your brush paint on wooden objects   seal with more laquer

20:  dip a stipple brush sz 2 into some varnish medium then into the powders and

stipple a great faux radiant pearls background!

21: dip into varnish on a paint brush then into your mica and then paint on shrink plastic before its shrunk!

22. use gel blending medium as your
medium, you can emboss with it the same as you would using embossing
fluid (which, because it has a bit of alcohol in it, is a little
easier to use for painting.......a la Radiant Pearls......than
straight glycerine).

23  mix with a glass painting medium for making
sun catchers or painting on glass.

24    use it on fabric if you
use a fabric medium or craft ink (from Tsukineko).

25    mix with acrylic paints and radiant pearls to ad luster

26 For a textured background, mix FD with gesso and paint a
fairly thick layer onto cardstock.  Use a wide-toothed comb or
similar tool to create a pattern in the FD/gesso and allow to dry.  This
background technique can also be used with acrylic paint.   Try swirling FD
into the paint, then comb through it to create a design.

27 make your gum arabic and powder paints...... then paint black glossy all over with it

and then with a dry uninked stamp.... stamp into the wet paint for a relief image!

or use a tiling tool and comb through it!!   great faux paste papers!!!!!!

28.     with your mixed paints paint directly on the rubber and stamp!

29.      Northern lights technique.. by USArt quest

Materials

  • mica powders - Any Color
  • Perfect Paper Adhesive - Matte
  • Krylon Leafing Pen - Any Color
  • Texture Sponge
  • Studio Cup
  • Rubbing Alcohol
  • Glossy black card stock

Directions

  1. Mix 1 part mica powder, 4 parts rubbing alcohol and a drop of Perfect Paper Adhesive - matte together in a Cup. Mix 2 or 3 seperate colors.
  2. Apply mixture to glossy card stock using a Sponge. Large puddles of color -or- a delicate sponge texture both work fine.
  3. Drip or pump a Krylon Leafing Pen onto the wet paint. Let dry.

Variations

Variations of this technique include adding Perfect fx Flakes or leaving the leafing pen out and letting the paint dry to a marbleized look.

30.AS AN ACRYLIC PAINT
• Mix mica Powder with Perfect Paper Adhesive (PPA) or any acrylic medium. Keep in small airtight jars for reuse as an acrylic paint.
• Allow the mica powders and PPA mixture to dry in a  Cup. This can be peeled from the cup, then stamped, embossed, torn, collaged, punched and decoratively cut.
• Drizzle the mixture onto art projects. Use in conjunction with a sprinkle of Perfect fx - mica flakes and granules, or heat it when embossing powder is applied.

31.Mix mica powders into any alkyd or oil-based paint to achieve a metallic brilliance and sheen

32     Apply mica powders to the surface of finished waxes, mix into clear or colored rubbing waxes, or mix it in as wax is being heated.
Mix a touch of Pearl Ex into melted crayons for a pearlescent encaustic medium.

33  apply mica powder to a previously embossed image. This is especially effective over Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel ‘debossed’ or ‘embossed’ stamped imagery.
Sprinkle mica powder onto an Perfect fx Embossing Tile. Sprinkle on Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel - Clear. Heat from the underside using a Handy Clip. While still molten, stamp.

34 Apply a thin coat of Perfect Paper Adhesive (PPA) to a dark surface, then rub several colors of dry mica powders onto the surface. This is a terrific background for rubber stamping or collage, as well as a surface effect for picture frames and mirrors.
to further enhance the background, use Krylon Webbing Spray over the mica powdered surface.

35   use mica powders to add more glitz to radiant pearls!

36.... interference colors with water and gum arabic into a paint and then paint over

any watercolor marker work and it will blend into your colors giving it a great brilliance!

37,,, write with your versa marker pen and then dust with mica powders

38. color sections of an image with a versa marker and then dust with mica powders

then color another section..... doing one color at a time..

39..    with a mop brush... dust over your card stock with mica powders

using one or more colors..... with more colors you can create a DTP look

then seal with hair spray....

40.  do direct to paper with cats eye pads then dust over with mica powders!

using either a brush or your finger..... do it all over or just streak it through!

41. using red line tape..... you can trim the edges of cards etc  with it then dust over

it with mica powders!    try rolling and crinkling that tape and then dust for a lacy effect!

WOW, Deborah!!!

That was so fantastic!! I had to keep a copy. If anyone wants a cleaned-up
copy without the =20 stuff, email me and I'll send you a copy. The
instructions are much easier to get without the MIME format scratchmarks.

THANKS, Deb!!!!!!!!!!!!

A MIME type is just a way of defining what kind of formatting your file
is sent out in. Different people use different kinds of software to read
newsgroups, and not all of them can read all MIME types.

Yes, please. And if you're using the same software to read news and
mail, then you should be able to set it up the same way.

Even though software manufacturers are equipping their wares with all
kinds of bells and whistles, that doesn't mean it's wise to use them.
Too many people still use plain-text news readers, and instead of nifty
fonts or images, they see ugly old code - if anything at all. Plus plain
text files take up a lot less space, digitally speaking, than formatted
ones.

Angie,

If you will go to my website www.powderedpearls.com there is a
comprehensive tip sheet there with at least a couple dozen ways to use
mica products. There is also a large gallery with examples.
