For textured surfaces such as fur, feathers, scales, or cloth, the dry brush
technique allows you to paint just the surface. Use a brush not dipped in
water. Load with paint, then wipe the brush on a paper towel so that the
bristles are barely coated with paint. Lightly brush the surface. The effect
is a light dusting of pigment that softens textures while enhancing them.
It's most effective when the paint is lighter than the painted surface. With
a little practice, even smooth untextured surfaces can be softened and
highlighted using this technique.
