I started the ornament today. First problem I encountered is that it's
not so easy to cover a round glass object with a thin sheet of clay. You
have to cut tiny slits in it to ease it in, much like you would when
easing a sleeve into an armhole.
Even with the slits, I had a few overlaps that stuck together, so I
shaved the top layer off with a tissue blade. Now I'm using the handle
of a brush to smooth it out.
As I'm doing this, I'm wondering if it would be possible to get a
single Christmas light with a battery inside it. The party this is for
is a luau set at sunset so much of it will be in the dark.
I won't know until I cure it how translucent it will be. If you can
see through it well enough, I will glue the fish, suspended with fishing
line, to the top of the ornament. I'll experiment with covering the top
with clay. If that doesn't work, I'll see what tropical trims I can find
at the fabric store. Wait...beads? Hmm...been wanting to learn peyote...

More as it goes....

Oh yes...the only glass ornament I had already had glitter inside it.
Will report on how that looks, too.

I like this method of showing us how it progresses. And you are giving a
thorough description. Can't wait to see how it turns out. Looking great!

Hi Kim,
Your interpetation is quite different from what I envisioned, its neat
how that works isnt it? Ill be looking forward to see where you go from
here. Im inspired to try one the way I saw it (in my minds eye) and post the
results too... just to show how two great minds (ahem) can take one idea and
get to very different destinations with it.

Not going well at all. Probably going to scrape it all off and start
over again. I can never gauge how dark the translucents will become.

Anyone with helpful comments would be loved forever.

I covered some glass oranaments a few years ago, and had the same problem with
bubbles. I found that wrapping thin coils of clay around the glass ball
instead of using a sheet took care of the problem completely. I have posted a
not-so-great photo of an ornament I called "Scuba Garden" on photopoint. I
have no idea how to post hyperlinks, so I hope you don't mind cutting and
pasting the URL.

It may not be what you wanted---but it has a very interesting look. And it
is different than what I expected as well. Sure wish I had a little time as
I want to try it!

Well, how do you like that? I guess all of my in all of my fumbling around, I
found out how to post hyperlinks after all!

became one herself)!

Here I do a hem and haw, and weakly protest I have no way of getting nice
images online.. right now.. .
BUT! .. I saw your update and I think your ornament is beautiful!!!! yes,
its not what you wanted and I wouldnt say dont try again, but it does have a
deep undersea beauty to it. It reminds me of some of the 'witches glass'
ornaments I saw at a craft show....

Loved forever, eh? I can't resist that. ;)

I think the baked piece is very cool. I know you're unhappy with the
darkened translucents and the bubbling, but in the scan it looks so
under-water-y, or even a little like the surface of the moon. Is the
surface relatively smooth, or did the bubbling make it bumpy? If smooth,
I'll bet it would be lovely sanded and buffed.

Good luck!

Ok, these maybe really dumb ideas and I missed the beginning of this thread,
but... For the luau, have you thought about getting the glass chimneys for oil
lamps and covering them in clay? You could put candles inside or a Christmas
light. When you mentioned Christmas lights, I also thought of covering the same
type of glass chimney in dark blue clay, light a night sky and using the
multiple string battery-operated Christmas lights as stars. Could remove bits
of clay from where the stars should be and tape the lights in the appropriate
places on the inside (if that makes sense). I also have some of those icky
looking plastic Christmas candles that plug in. Maybe a interesting clay
covering would make them better.

That's a great thought Cyn. Here's the deal...my daughter's Sweet 16
is in Feb. I had bought some violet bowls at Michael's to be covered and
candles put inside. I'm experimenting with other things now to get it
down before I tackle the bowls.

Going to swipe your idea for another project.

Thanks,

Kim

It actually is fairly smooth, considering. And under very strong
light, the glitter shows through. Maybe I'll save this after all for
the What I learned"" pile.

You made a hyperlink. It's that easy. lol And I love the nick.
So I need to try coiling. I used to make coiled baskets out of jute
and yarn, so I think I can handle that. Thanks for the idea.
Your ornament is too cute! Saving the pic to look at as I work on the
next one.

I like the look also, although it's not what you were going for...and
the scan w/ the red clay dots had a very "Jupiter" look about it....

I know I'm jumping in here very late, but I've just tried something
you may find intriguing, Kim. I took a clear glass ornament, and dabbed
my "garbage" clay all across the inside, then baked it.
While I was dabbing the clay in place, I put a couple of fine cracks in
the neck of the ornament, but baked it anyway.
When I pulled it out of the oven, the glass had cracked all around, so
I just peeled all the glass off. I'm in the process of sculpting a new top
area for it, out of gold. I'm also in the middle of making another, this time
in Christmas colors.
The really neat part about it is that when you peel off the glass, the
outside is mirror-shiny! Now, I must stress this is a bit dicey of a process,
since these ornaments were such thin glass, they were almost like light bulbs,
and will cut you in a heartbeat!! But today I bought some thicker ornaments,
and am going to do all sorts of radical things with them. :o)

I have also managed to get one covered with clay slices, having a couple
of old purchased canes on hand, and wanting to use them up. Not elegant,
but these will do nicely for a casual present for my friends. :o)

Hey Miracle,

Would you mind if I put a link to this page in mine?
http://www.tlcnet.com/~party/polyclay.html

And anyone else who is trying this, successful or not. I think it
would be great to have our own little "web ring" on the techniques we've
tried making these ornaments. (Or anything else, for that matter)
