Hi,
Just got back from a craft/bead store where the owner wants some of my
beads. She wants beads with holes large enough for hemp, and specifically
wanted to know how well they would withstand water. Seems that alot of the
local college students who frequent her shop make hemp bracelets and
necklaces and NEVER take them off. They have complained in the past of
colors bleeding off, etc.
Can these beads withstand showers, hairspray, and whatever else young
college students would expose them to?

Experiment with the hair spray - there could be chemicals in there that make
polymer clay break down. Just spray some onto some baked clay and leave it
for a day or two.
As for water - shouldn't be a problem. The worst that I can think of
happening is that the colors will fade eventually. Polymer is not very color
fast, but, it may not be very noticeable unless it's in the sun for long
periods of time.

Why am I alwasy thinking it's fade proof? Isn't there some brand out there
that boasts fadeproof?

I sold beads to stores in San Diego for years, and some made their way to
surfers...I knew a few that wore the beads, and they fade a bit over the years
but hold up OK to water, just not constant immersion. Any finish wears off so
go with matte. Don't know about chlorinated pools, though. And surfers rarely
wear hairspray. Gel, maybe, no spray...not with hemp cord.

I haven't found one. But I do have a little birdhouse that's been
hanging outside for about 6 months that hasn't faded as far as I can
tell. It's all FIMO, and aside from some weathering from rain and dirt,
it's the original color. Hmmm...someone remind me and I'll scan it to
put up next to the original scan.

Thanks to all. This is important information that I can pass on to the store
owner that will be a real selling point to her customers. (Remembering a
previous post I read here, I impressed her with the information that pc was
invented during WWII by an old, German dollmaking family........ You guys
sure make me look smart! Thanks, again.) Would have taken me alot of
research and time to figure this out....not to mention all the poor,
victimized, tortured beads. (you know, hairspray in the eyes, that kind of
thing)
Off topic, ever notice the kind of squealling, schreeching noise that eggs
make when you take them straight out of the oven and into the ice water?
Eerie, I think.
