The Illinois State Police Department is the latest entity to announce
massive layoffs in response to the state budget crisis with more than 460
troopers cut from the force and 5 regional headquarters closed.
Those are the numbers ISP Director Jonathon Monken presented to a state
senate appropriations committee yesterday. He predicted those cuts will have
"significant consequences to public safety," according to an Associated
Press report.
The headquarters that will be closed are in Des Plaines, Carmi, Macomb,
Litchfield and Pecatonica.
Monken says including retirements, the department's team of 2000 troopers
could be reduced by 600 by next fall.
Those layoff numbers are contingent on Governor Pat Quinn's current proposed
budget in which ISP will lose $32 million in funding. Illinois has a $13
billion deficit. In addition to unprecedented budget cuts, Quinn is also
proposing a tax increase to help bail out the state.
Illinois State Police are probably best known to the public for highway
patrol. However, the agency also has specialty units that supplement local
law enforcement agencies in the areas of forensics, drug trafficking, search
and rescues missions and more.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports Chicago police would have to take over patrol
of some 53 miles of Chicago area expressways. CPD, of course, has its own
budget issues and the department is currently short some 700 sworn officers.
The Sun-Times says on any given day, the department is short 2100 officers
once medical leaves and limited duty cases are factored in.
