I brought it home last night. Previous owner claimed it ran the last
time they welded with it..about 12 yrs ago. Look at the wheels....blink
blink..Ive never seen a wheel with no hole in the middle before. I drug
it from Bakersfield..about 45 miles at 55-60 mph and the bearings didnt
get warm..and I know it had sat parked for at least 8 yrs since they
pulled it down from the ranch.
Owner claimed it had come off a Liberty Ship vintage WW2...shrug
Anyone have any ideas?

Nope, sorry Gunner.
But could you do me a real biggie and run a couppla tests for the post down
below please?
As I said I've been lurking and occasionally posting on here.
I know all about your wheel incident & love your posts.

Looks like a good ole 226 Continental---taxicabs--kaiser-frazier--If the
block is OK you're in pretty good shape---but Continental made a lot of
industrial engines--there can be differences in the front cover mounting
holes in block, and possibly the rear mounting too..

Got a spare Diet Mt. Dew and Ill join you. Maybe we can con some young
guy into firing it up....?
<G>
What sort of test?
No idea. Its missing the battery.
Chuckle..the welding leads I suspect are as hard as a rock. Here in the
high desert...when its 120F..and stuff enclosed in a metal box and stand
in the sun for a number of years...getting up to 150=160F....
Standing just right..the stinger shows crystalization of the plastic.
Shrug..Ive got lots and lots of stingers if that one starts to
disintergrate.
Ill have to check everything out, fill the empty radiator, add some
fuel, etc etc and try it out. I did notice that there is No air
cleaner..though the air stack goes way way up into the upper dome of the
cabinet. After seeing that..Id be quite suprised if it has "good"
compression. Though to be fair...up that high..it may not have sucked
up any "big" stuff.
Ill take some photos of the other side..where the water jacket cracked
many years ago and they patched it. It was on a ranch up in the
Sierras..and it may have frozen. I was told once..but after the
stroke..some tidbits went away. No biggie.
I think Ill run the engine down to the car wash and blow out the birds
nests, tumbleweeds and whatnot that cover the motor itself.

Which fan blades? Generator or engine? Generator blades are open on
the bottom of the generator housing..the engine fan is tucked in behind
the radiator nicely.
The water jacket was cracked as I recall..I need to open the "drivers"
side but Ive got the temporary taillight wiring attached to it so need
to remove it first. They patched the water jacket many years ago and
ran it for many years after that. Ill take pictures tommorow and
investigate it better. Might even try to jump start it..but gas is dear
at the moment and it Can wait for a bit.

Rather than trying to be careful, I would fabricate and install a simple fan
shroud and be done with it.

With a bit of luck the engine is free. I remember your stuck piston
adventure.
Cringe...yeah..that has concerned me. What would you guys do prior to

Greed is the root of all eBay.
Make sure it turns over, has spark and that the carb isn't plugged full
of varnish/old gas/dirt daubers.
If possible it wouldn't be a bad idea to connect up a way to push some
new oil into the bearings and such before turning it over a lot. If it
has a distributer driven pump you could use a tool to spin the pump
until it has oil pressure.
Then shoot a small amount of Kroil/WD 40 or other THIN creeping lube
into each plug hole and turn it over slowly so the oil can coat the
walls. Then shoot some gas into the carb bore and see if it fires.
Make sure the gauges work prior to starting on this. Nothing like
thinking everything is OK when you really have no oil pressure!

ROFLMAO! Indeed.
Good ideas all! Noted!!
Thanks!!
No, it is old insulation, prior to use of neoprene rubber.
I would just try cranking it without any special preparations.
If it does not crank, see if it is frozen. If it is, take it to the
scrap yard along with the remains of the other welder. If it is not
frozen, I would mess with it a little.
I would not personally spend too much time on it, it is
counterproductive. If a couple of "easy fixes" do not fix it, just
sell it with full disclosure or part it out. This is just a personal
opinion.
The age is beyond what is maintainable, no one knows these engines any
more, no parts are available, etc. I doubt it has much collector
value, but if you are lucky and its runs, it would be a great luck and
a success story.

Fresh gas in the tank and carb, Marvel Mystery oil down the bore, pop
the distributor and use a drill to build up the oil pressure, and hand
rotate it through at least a couple revs before using the starter, to
make sure you don't already have broken parts in there ready to do
damage when it's cranked.

Wow, some hack electrician must have wired up that trailer for ya.
<snort> That block looks like the same one they use for the slant 6,
IIRC. Other than the flat head, it could be a newer engine.
Hey, did you see that they recalled some Obama Motors Cobalts for
steering problems the other day? I'd begun to think that they were
running down Toyota to get rid of the competition. Guess not.
So far Im able to determine that the engine is extremely common, made up
to the late 1970s. A Chrysler inline 6 and used in many automobiles as
well as industrial equipment.
So engine parts should be fairly easy to get, based on viewing posts on
a number of welding newsgroups.
The welder of course..shrug..all the wire looks to be in acceptable
condition so Im not terribly concerned about that portion.
Gunner
This is great news!

Remains of the Miller 55G that my buddy is rebuilding for me?
Odd you would say that. Have you priced a used one recently?
Are you claiming that if an engine on a $2000 welder needs minor
rebuilding, one should simply throw it into the trash?
Sure you didnt take a pry bar to the head recently?
Drink some beers? "Here, hold my beer and watch THIS!
For sure don't just scrap it. Everythings still available for most of the
older industrial engines.
The problem might be generator parts. A call to the Bakersfield Praxair
welding machine shop will likely tell you what is or isn't available. I'm
sure Wendell is completely retired by now but there are some other guys in
there that are very good and very helpfull.
It's a true DC generator, and there are still a (dwindling) number of people
using them. I knew a guy a few years ago running an early 40's 350 amp
Hobart generator with a Cummins, he put the original engine in his
generator.
Hobart used a variety of common ind engines over the years in their
machines. Worst case would be part it out or sell it to someone with a
similar machine, if you have the time to find that guy.
JTMcC.
I thought it just might be a Chrysler industrial engine. I never used one,
but knew someone who has a long time ago.
Richard W.
It seemed that older cars had rubber hoses and those from out of state
for the most part ate through the rubber and dripped and sprayed gas
over the engine.
Oh yea - MTBE - finally got that brain cell out of the trash container!
Martin
The unit had a 4 or 6 cylinder engine in the rear attached to a 220 100 amp
alternator.
If you see a junk yard that has recked motor homes - larger ones - might
have a nice 4 or 6 cylinder engine made to drive a generator. Normally
in the passenger side rear.
His was water cooled and ran off the 50 gallon tank of gas.
Also, one winter he forgot to fill the cylinders with oil during the
winter. Lived in North Dakota at the time. He came down to our house
and I took him to a diesel truck repair shop - the tool store next door
to buy a large box wrench - as the front end of the main drive shaft
was a hex. The cylinders had locked up. When finding that out,
he put in cylinder top oil in each, replaced the plugs and drove
to our house... We turned the main shaft over and it got easier and easier
to turn. Finally after several complete turns Dad decided to hit the switch.
It fired right off and ran for years.
Martin
The best engine for those old welders was a Ford aircooled V4. Flat head,
but ran great. Last one my dad got had never been run or had run maybe a
total or 20 minutes. Was hooked up to the Air Raid siren at the Richmond,
CA shipyards on a building that later became a Ford assembly line. He had
part of the contract for dismantling the Ford plant.
Is that a Continental engine?
Steve
The Chrysler 225 slant six? I have one in my garage with less than
3000 miles after a complete rebuild by a mechanical Engineer who
collected Mopar. He said it is from a '63 Valiant. He did a complet
rebuild, then decided to cram a Hemi into the car.
There may be room for a small one wire alternator in there. You
don't need a big generator for the electrical system. Just enough to
charge the battery and to power the ignition system.
You have no idea where they've been, or what kind of diseases they
leave behind. :(
The WELDING generator, you DO need that.
JTMcC.
The WELDING generator, you DO need that.

Ayup...got the hack electrician to wire it up for me in the dark with a
mini-Mag between his teeth, in Harbor Freights parking lot. Shrug.
Id been working since 6am, then drove 3 hours up from LA, had to run
around trying to find good used tires and having them changed out,
trying to find a ball in my gear that would hold the hitch, etc etc.
But I got it home safely. No tickets, no washee. Thats all that counts.
Now I got to figure out where to stick it. The back 40 is still
flooded..where the mud isnt 4" deep. And will be going out in a few and
straightening the jack stand so it will be self supporting.

No, I missed that one. Ive not watched TV in over a month...and
frankly..havent missed it.
Thats sorta what I was thinking.
Ive got a good Ranger 9, that Miller 55G thats slowly being rebuild by a
buddy who owes me favors, and now the Hobart. At worst..I can haul it
in the Oildorado parade later this year, at best..Ill have a nice
loaner/heavy welder that hauls marvelously behind the Ranger.
Shrug. Or I can fix it up and give it a paint job and then peddle it.
This afterall..is the oil patch..and a trailer mounted 300 amp welder
should sell for more than I gave for it...ie..to date...$60 (tires)
Gunner
Well to be fair...they are grouped wierd..and 3/4 are hidden behind the
carby. So dont be rough on yourself <G>
Wish I was closer, I'd double your money quick...

I believe you'll make a couple of bucks off that. My BIL came over after I
got my SA200 running, and had a friend. I found out from talking to him
that he is a welding instructor at the local college. I showed him the
SA200. He made me promise that if I ever wanted to sell it, I called him
first. His eyes just about popped out of his head.
I think you'll make decent money on that welder.

April will mark my 3rd year without TV. I don't miss it at all. I get
movies from Netflix for 1/4 the price of DISH, and they don';t have
any commercials, either. Watching a half hour news program on the one
station I get here is excruciating. I'm constantly attacking the
remote to mute the damned commercials. It's official: half hour news
programs consist of 13 minutes of content and 17 minutes of
commercials. TV: 500 channels of horrible programming + commercials.

Did you look at the photos? There are TWO generators. One is for the
electrical system.
It was sitting in a very large mud hole, both tires exploded, with the
jack looking exactly as it does. I had to back up to the edge of the mud
hole, stomp around in 4" of mud, hook up with a chain to a ball in the
upper bumper, pry up the tounge, bolt the chain into a loop and then
very gently pull the protesting bastard out of the mud some 30 feet to a
dry spot, jack up the toung with my truck jack, then back under it, then
back out when I discovered my 2" ball was too big, install a 1 7/8" one,
then back up again, hook up, then dig through my truck for a can of
lube..not find any..then ultimately stick my fingers down the power
steering pump reservior for enough lube to allow the bolt style draw
toggle to finally break through the rust I had to wire brush off the
draw toggle and tighten up. This after jacking it up, pulling off one
wheel, and traveling a meandering 5 miles one way until I finally found
a used tire shop that had a unmatched pair of 16:" tires, have one
mounted, return and install, then jack up the other side, drive back and
have the other one mounted, then return and install the second one. By
this time it was dark. The welder is narrow enough that both my tail
lights could be seen on either side of it from the rear..but given that
law enforcement is on a revenue raising campaign because of reduced tax
income....I drove to Harbor Freight on back streets and up alleys and
down byways into their parking lot where I picked up some bulbs and
whatnot..then dig out a spool of 10ga THHN from truck stock and get
enough lighting functioning to drive the 34 miles to my home.

10ga ought to be thick enough for taillights, yeah. <bseg> You should
have picked up a set of magnetic trailer lights from HF last month for

critical part.

I didn't see his 5-March post on RCM.
My late FIL and very good friend had a gas-engine trailer-mounted
Hobart, said it was the sweetest welder he'd ever used. He burned a
lot of 7018 with that machine.
I coulda had it for the asking when he died but I've no place to keep
it or use it and someone who did was very glad to have it. There was
some *very* heavy stuff in the basement, so the deal was they got that
Hobart for a very good price providing they also take a welding table
that easily weighed 500 lb. No prob, they showed up with some big
friends and it was all gone before sundown. Good deal for everyone.
