Supplies with Obama logo surprise school
By Jonathon Braden

Thursday, December 3, 2009

Pencils and notebooks resembling President Barack Obama's 2008 campaign ads
have been sold in at least one Columbia school and other public schools,
causing the company that distributes the materials to travel around the
state yanking the supplies out of machines.

"Don't be mad at us," said Greg Jones, a sales representative with Pencil
Wholesale. "It was a total accident."

Pencil Wholesale distributes supplies to six Columbia schools: Parkade
Elementary, Cedar Ridge Elementary, Paxton Keeley Elementary, Mill Creek
Elementary, Smithton Middle School and Hickman High School, said Linda
Quinley, the district's chief financial officer.

At Mill Creek, at least one pencil and a notebook with designs similar to
Obama campaign advertisements have been sold out of a supply machine. Two
families have complained about the politically tinged materials.

Three Missouri schools have contacted Jones since the beginning of the
school year asking that the materials be removed, and Mill Creek Principal
Mary Sue Gibson this week said she also planned to call Pencil Wholesale.

"I just don't want to get into that political arena at all," she said.

The bound three-ring notebook bears a photo of literal change - pennies,
quarters, dimes and nickels stacked into piles. Above the photo, white text
reads "CHANGE" over a navy background.

Below the photo, "WE CAN BELIEVE IN" sits above a logo similar to Obama's
campaign image - three red stripes separated by white stripes in front of a
white circle with a blue background arching over the circle.

The supplies were designed by the art department of Harcourt Pencil Co.,
based in Milroy, Ind., Jones said.

"The art department was trying to be cutesy," he said.

There was no response this morning to a phone message to Harcourt.

Jones delivers the supplies to about 800 schools. He remembers seeing the
Obama-esque notebook when it was first designed, but "I didn't think one
thing about it," he said.

Jones has agreed to go to schools that might have received the supplies and
remove them.

"I wish I could do it over," he said. "But, for now, I can just make it
right."

Harcourt plans to give Jones a refund on the supplies as well, he said.

But first, Jones has to find the supplies. Out of a case of 72 notebooks,
three of the controversial notebooks can be found, he said.

"It's turned out to be really ugly," Jones said. "We're trying to get them
out of the schools as fast as we can."

He also wants to be clear that neither he nor his company created the
design. In fact, he said, he's a registered Republican who voted for John
McCain in last year's presidential election.

"It's a total nightmare," Jones said.

Have you noticed that Lib Doo seems to think he's the newsgroup's Glenn
Beck? He never lets up with his negativity towards the president just
like Beck does. He's just as irrational as Beck too. Remember when we
used to say how dumb Bush's policies and actions were and how much he
hated that? Now the shoe is on the other foot he's ten times worse than
any of us were and we were right about Bush. Typical right wing
hypocrite. But worst of all his intellect is nothing short of Doo.

LOL...Hawke...I agree with you.

Considering he named himself after a toilet it comes as no surprise
his rants.

I hadn't considered the Beck connection but again you are right
on...Loo and Beck could easily share the same padded room.

Yeah...this is a real problem.

And we wouldn't want things like the Flag and The Golden Rule showing
up on pencils and notebooks either.

They would conflict with the winger brainwashing for the conservative
sheeple.

Guys like Beck didn't say Jack about the looming disaster when the
republicans were running the government, did they? Now that it's the
Democrats in charge it's nothing but, the sky is falling, the sky is
falling. In a couple of years, when everyone will be able to see the
improvements, what the hell are they going to say? I predict they will
be just like the Gilda Radner character Roseanne Rosanadana. After
predicting nothing but disaster and catastrophe when none of it comes to
pass they'll say like she did, NEVERMIND! Just think how idiotic they
are going to look if the country improves under the Democrats. Funny
they never considered that. Which was pretty damn stupid of them.

Try posting an important article next time.

The one you posted just demonstrated how small minded conservatives
are.

Considering that we see it every day, one wonders why you
posted...lonely?

I didn't fail to omit it, I left it in there because it was part of the
story. Only libs like to omit parts of stories to perpetuate their lies.

I leave it to leftards like Hawke to omit any reasonable discussion of the
topic at hand, and to fire volleys of insults at the messenger. This is a
typical behavior of somebody who wants to win an argument, any argument, but
is poorly armed to do so. Intellectually or otherwise.

The part of the story that contradicts the title of your post. It is clear
that the "Change we can believe in" was intended as a goof on Obama's
slogan, or at the very least, just a stupid pun. It doesn't promote Obama
and he had nothing to do with nickel-diming school supplies.

It may contradict the title, but nothing was omitted and the story was
intact with a proper link to the origin. There was no intention to deceive
or omit, that would be a lib tactic. Now if he has a problem with the teaser
to the actual story, he should just come out and say so.
