Here are 2009's top 10 stories as voted by the U.S. editors and news
directors:

_1. THE ECONOMY: Despite a $787 billion federal stimulus package, much of
the U.S. economy continued to sputter throughout the year. The jobless rate
topped 10 percent, scores of banks failed, the federal deficit tripled to a
record $1.4 trillion, and stocks fell to their lowest levels since 1997
before rallying. Yet investment banks' profits surged, triggering public
anger and efforts in Washington to crack down on Wall Street bonuses.

_2. OBAMA INAUGURATION: Inauguration Day in January was a moving moment for
many Americans, as the nation's first black president took the oath of
office. But Obama soon confronted the sobering realities of governing as he
struggled to get the economy back on track and win support for his ambitious
legislative priorities.

_3. HEALTH CARE: A sweeping overhaul of the U.S. health care system,
extending coverage to millions of Americans now without it, was a top
priority for Obama and majority Democrats in Congress. But Republicans were
almost unanimously opposed, leading to complex, bitterly partisan showdowns
in both chambers.

_4. AUTO INDUSTRY: It was an immensely challenging year for America's Big
Three automakers. General Motors and Chrysler filed for bankruptcy, GM's CEO
Rick Wagoner was ousted by the government, and Chrysler was pressured into
an alliance with Italy's Fiat. Ford avoided bankruptcy, but its worldwide
sales - like its competitors' - fell sharply.

_5. SWINE FLU: Swine flu struck tens of millions of people worldwide,
worrying governments as supplies of vaccine failed to meet demand. In the
United States, according to federal authorities, swine flu sickened an
estimated 50 million people, hospitalized close to 200,000 and killed
10,000.

_6. AFGHANISTAN: Casualties on all sides mounted as U.S. forces, with their
Afghan and NATO allies, battled the resilient Taliban. President Obama,
after lengthy deliberations, opted to send 30,000 more troops. His decision
was complicated by the disputed Afghan election, which prompted allegations
of widespread fraud but resulted in President Hamid Karzai taking office for
a second five-year term.

_7. MICHAEL JACKSON DIES: The "King of Pop" died at the age of 50,
triggering grief and nostalgia among his legions of fans around the world.
His doctor became the focus of a Los Angeles police homicide investigation
after telling investigators he administered propofol, a powerful operating
room anesthetic, to help the pop star sleep.

_8. FORT HOOD RAMPAGE: An Army psychiatrist, Maj. Nidal Hasan, was accused
of killing 13 people at Fort Hood, a sprawling military base in Texas,
before being seriously wounded by police gun fire. Investigations were
launched to determine if authorities missed warning signs that might have
prevented the rampage.

_9. EDWARD KENNEDY DIES. Sen. Edward Kennedy, who carried on the family
legacy after the deaths of his three older brothers, died of brain cancer
after a distinctive political career filled with highs and lows. Though his
own presidential aspirations were thwarted, he earned bipartisan respect for
decades of hard work in the Senate.

_10. MIRACLE ON HUDSON: A US Airways passenger jet, both its engines
disabled, made an emergency ditching in the Hudson River, and all 155 on
board survived in what was dubbed "The Miracle on the Hudson." The veteran
pilot, Chesley Sullenberger, was hailed as a hero for averting a disaster.

Sullenberger was hailed as a hero by the libtards too, until they found out
he is a staunch conservative. Now the libtards call him "Goose Killer" and
sicked PETA on him.

They never freed them. The federal government made them wards of
the state under the 14th A. and now keeps most of them them enslaved
in large compounds called 'cities' where they're trained by
community organizers to commit crimes for politician's elections and
rig ballots.

Michael has no limits, but he does have selective vision. I made a wisecrack
to Gunner that "The best thing to do with [rubbers is] to use them once,
then toss them in the trash." Michael responded that it was "Too bad your
[my] parents didn't follow that advice." To which I replied that it was a
shame that his mother's abortion was a failure.

About which Michael got all huffy. His parents are off limits, you see, but
it was OK for him to insult mine first.

You can say that again. And vice-versa. There's nothing like a winger who
goes moralistic. It's always a matter of some ideological point that he
doesn't really understand, and which disparages everyone else's. In
fairness, though, Michael only gets huffy when his arguments have run out of
steam and he has nowhere else to turn.

Did I mention that Michael says his mother would have shot me if she heard
me say that? I'm not surprised. It's a different culture. It makes one
wonder how many of his relatives he has to visit in prison at holiday time.

Of course there won't be a Trudeau comic strip celebrating Obama's war
dead. Because somehow it's no longer an issue.

Right. I hope they're all near his home.

I only have two left, except for the two in my home. And we had them one of
them here for Christmas. The other went to visit her husband's relatives.

How many of yours don't you visit?

First, what has faith got to do with believing in "Christmas?" Although
nominally associated with religion, "Christmas" has meaning far beyond
the religious story associated with the name. Thus my statement that
Curly, who professes no religious belief (and is pretty much in the
anti-religion camp), believes more in Christmas than LieBeeLou, who
demonstrates daily (as well as in the text to which I responded) that he
is in no way a christian, professional or professing. I really fail to
understand the reference in your question about "perfect," as that has
NO connection with any prior text, or your canard about belief in a
mythical superbeing.

Your nonsensical statement about Curly not believing in anything but
himself is a complete nonsequitur, ever were it even the slightest based
in conventional reality.

So, what did you intend to say that is somehow connected with the
tit-for-tat between Curly and Liar?

Religionists love to make the assumption that their superstition somehow
puts them on a moral pedestal. That their book of superstitions elevates
their membership to a moral superiority. That non-believers are
therefore of lower integrity. It is an assumption without basis and one
which history conclusively proves false.

It is true that they are different from most, a very unique and desperate
set of defects. They've worked hard to create their image, let them
continue to spew bile, to stomp their little feet in hatred and
frustration at the failures of their beliefs, at the catastrophes their
team created, at the lies of their leaders. Let them continue to defend
the indefensible.

But that is the fantasy world they've created as a bulwark against
reality. A world where even those who profess to be "Good Christians"
excuse their failures by confession rather than doing the right thing to
begin with. Note that you are responding to the trolls who revel in
projecting degenerate acts onto others. Showing the sickness of their
minds rather than sliming their intended targets.

In my opinion it is best to allow, and even encourage, their mad
ravings. Let readers see the mental illness of their tribe, clan and
political party.

Responding to their lunacy is like wrestling with pigs.

Actually, they don't. They are more aware of their own imperfections.

Odd, but it is your little feet that stomp each time you eject bile
onto this newsgroup about "CrazyMotherFuckers."

Say it isn't so.

What are your excuses for continually doing the wrong thing? Like a

It's kind of sad when guys like Curly demand tolerance and acceptance
from everyone, but are some of the most intolerant people you'd ever
meet.

Both of my parents grew up on working farms where it was common to
shoot rabid dogs and other vermin around the property. With what he
said about her, if she didn't shoot him someone else would have. It
might even be the Sherriff.

Ed can only work with what he knows about life, so in his mind
everyone has family in prison. Unfortunately for his small mind, none
of my extended family was in prison. I don't even know of any who was in
jail. Some were farmers who raised a variety of food and tobacco. Some
made 'Mennifee County Sorghum' as a cash crop. One uncle owned a large
quarry, 'Acme Crushed Stone' that supplied most of the rock to build the
interstate highways in Kentucky. Others served in the military in WW I,
WW II and Korea. A few my age served during Vietnam. One uncle was
'Ship's Electrician' on a nuclear sub who maintained & tested the firing
controls for the weapons systems. Other aunts & uncles served wherever
they were needed from infantry to accounting. A few worked in factories
making corrugated boxes & tires. A couple aunts waited tables in nice
restaurants. One grandmother worked at a hospital. They were hard
working and honest people who raised their families in peaceful
neighborhoods. On the other hand, they wouldn't allow any 'big mouthed
moron' do anything to harm any family members. Not a single New Jersey
mobster in the family. Ed just can't stand that I am nice white man,
who can be pushed too far.

Real work is something Ed has never done. Pushing a red & blue
pencil and insulting people online isn't work, but it was all Ed was
ever capable of. That is why he is so angry and has to try to insult
people. It's really sad, but it's too late to do anything to help him.
He never has any projects to occupy his time, so all he can do is post
bullshit politics and feeble insults.

A very tiny subset might have that attribute; the vast majority do not.
The number of rightwingnuts who actually perform any significant
self-assessment is so small as to be inconsequential, as shown in their
speech and writings.

We derive our morality from the practical observation of the real world,
the same place that the "holy books" get theirs. The difference is we
act on our morality, while you just go about your business without ever
comparing what you DO with what you profess; the vast majority of you
never really understand your religious texts, but instead are led around
by the nose by politically aspiring manipulators.

Hey, YOU are the supposed christian - when was the last time you turned
the other cheek (if ever)? Why are you trying to hold HIM to the
standard you don't even attempt to approach, let alone try to achieve?

Just asking...

Au contraire, unaware! It is you with the little feet making all your noise.
Our feet are many and big and wear boots that we'll confidently stick in
your ass every chance we get. You are the hater, you could never fit in and
it makes a hater. You are a time bomb waiting to self destruct, we look
forward to you going to your reward.
