Obama has my respect and now a Nobel Prize.

Neither one George Bush ever had.

But we do owe George Bush thanks for helping to make this happen.

And every misguided Republican who voted for George Bush.

Obama would never have been elected without both of them.

Obama says he'll accept Nobel as 'call to action'
By DARLENE SUPERVILLE, Associated Press Writer Darlene Superville,
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON – A beaming President Barack Obama said Friday he was both
honored and humbled to win the Nobel Peace Prize and would accept it
as a "call to action" to work with other nations to solve the world's
most pressing problems.

Obama told reporters in the White House Rose Garden that he wasn't
sure he had done enough to earn the award, or deserved to be in the
company of the "transformative figures" who had won it before him.

But, he said, "I will accept this award as a call to action, a call
for all nations to confront the challenges of the 21st century."

Obama will travel to Oslo, Norway, in December to accept the award,
including a $1.4 million prize. The White House said Obama will donate
the entire amount to charity.

Obama, 48, is the third U.S. president to win the prize while in
office, after Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. Former President
Jimmy Carter won the prize in 2002, more than two decades after he
left office.

In its surprise choice, the Norwegian Nobel Committee cited the
president's creation of a "new climate in international politics" and
his work on nuclear disarmament, even though he is just nine months
into his presidency.

"These challenges cannot be met by any one leader or any one nation,"
the president said. "That's why my administration wants to establish a
new era of engagement in which all nations must take responsibility
for the world we seek."

Obama acknowledged that, while accepting an award for peace, he was
commander in chief of a country engaged in wars in Iraq and
Afghanistan.

"We have to confront the world as we know it," he said.

He said he was working to end the war in Iraq and "to confront a
ruthless adversary that directly threatens the American people and our
allies" in Afghanistan.

"I'm also aware that we are dealing with the impact of a global
economic crisis that has left millions of Americans looking for work,"
he said.

"This award must be shared by everyone who strives for justice and
dignity," he added.

He said that some of his goals, including that of a nuclear-weapons-
free world, might not be accomplished in his lifetime.

"I am both surprised and deeply humbled by the decision of the Nobel
Committee," Obama said.

"Let me be clear, I do not view it as a recognition of my own
accomplishments, but rather as an affirmation of American leadership
on behalf of aspirations held by people in all nations."

Obama said he was aware that "throughout history, the Nobel Peace
Prize has not just been used to honor specific achievement, it's also
been used as a means to give momentum to a set of causes."

The award took the Obama and his staff by surprise. Press secretary
Robert Gibbs learned from reporters that Obama had won the 2009 prize,
and telephoned the White House early Friday to pass along the news to
his boss.

"Well, this is not how I expected to wake up this morning," Obama
said. He described his interaction with his two daughters.

"After I received the news, Malia walked in and said, 'Daddy, you won
the Nobel Peace Prize, and it is Bo's birthday.' And then Sasha added,
`Plus, we have a three-day weekend coming up.' So it's — it's good to
have kids to keep things in perspective."

Ok I see how this works now; if I had only known my 7 yr old could have been
a contender when he told me "everybody can get along if they would just be
nice to each other". This is the end result of giving every kid who shows up
for the game a trophy instead of just the best players. By the way I have
cold fusion figured out, just don't have the full-scale model running
yet.... perhaps the physics prize is still up for grabs.

All politics aside I feel this cheapens the prize as it is now so obviously
based on perceptions as opposed to actual achievements. Anyone with true
hard earned accolades knows this weather they are 4 or 40.

Well, isn't that what the wacko birthers are saying? When confronted with
Obama's birth announcement in two different Hawaii newspapers published at
the time of his birth, they're saying that the stories were planted,
ostensibly because his mother wanted to cover his butt, in case he became
President. She just *knew* -- and he wasn't even close to 7 years old yet!

Isn't that about it?

Fair enough. This one is a little wacky. They're just overjoyed that Obama
isn't Bush, and that he talks like he wants peace for everyone. By
comparison, Bush looks like Attila the Hun, and Obama looks like St. Francis
of Assisi.

He'll have mine if he turns it down. He'll earn the respect of those
who do not confuse effort with results.

If he turns it down, people will view it in one of two ways; it was an
incredibly astute political move or, the actions of a man more
statesman than politician. The former is, from his perspective, a lost
cause anyway, and with the latter it will win new friends and
influence people. Is he smart enough?

A two bit, run of the mill, politician will book his flight for Oslo
because he won't be able to resist having such a prestigious addition
to his resume, whether it has any actual meaning or not.

I'll bet arguments along these lines are underway in the White House
right now.

I don't see how not being your predecessor is truly an accomplishment on any
scale. It can set the stage for concrete progress but by itself ,not so
much. Further he has yet to change many of the things that painted Bush as
Attila the Hun. He has made promises and suggestions but completed few
deeds.

My guess is that Obama is a little embarrassed about it. I'll be interested

Too late. He accepted it. Tater wonders if he had any hint between the
time he was being considered and now. If he did, then would have been
the time to tell them thanks, but no thanks. On the other hand, that
sort of rejection would not have been as effective as one once the
prize had been announced.

Tater's disappointed at him missing this political opportunity. Even
though Tater don't agree with Obama on a lot of stuff, he was pretty
sure Obama was a really clever politician. But how clever can you be
to turn down Tater's advice, even after the fact?

Didn't you know? The rightards are working hard on this fantasy that
George Bush was a really great president and all the economic problems
are Obama's fault and he didn't do nearly enough soon enough, or
wait... he did too much. He should have done nothing at all, or

Being half-black isn't much of an "accomplishment". Actually Obammy

As you can probably guess I don't care much for President Obama.

To win this, he had to be nominated a year ago, he hasn't been President that long. IOW,
he hasn't had the power to do anything long enough.

If it was comment on the American people electing a black man for the first time then the
Nobel prize should go to the American people.

Arafat also was awarded this prize iirc. That made a joke of the prize.

President Carter also was awarded the prize. While I have no love of President Carter, I
tend to think he got that one honestly. I will set aside arguments of philosophy.

Well the first thing of note he did, which desearves a reward for
bravery if nothing else, was to run for office as a black man in a
(still) very racially devided and politically fractuous country like
the U.S.of A.
The fact that he SURVIVED to be elected is an accomplishment in
itself.
If he survives to actually accomplish much of what he has set out to
do will be another accomplishment - given the general tone of some of
the meatheads on this list.

It's taken a lot of GUTS to get this far - and he's got the guts to do
what needs to be done if some nutcase doesn't spill them for him
first.

What he did, while running for the office, was convince the Europeans that,
given just a SLIGHTLY larger head than he already had, he would
successfully pursue his rampaging destruction of the USA. Winning the
office clinched it, and they elected him (8 months prior to the
announcement) so that he might continue his injuries to freedom.

And so far, he's upholding their wish.

Since the decision was made 8 months before there WERE any deeds, we must
assume that now the Peace Prize is awarded for stated intentions -- not
even ACTUAL intentions, just the lies he told to get their notice.

The 'prize' is not a representation of the world.

Caution to those that put too much emphasis on one man.

What office was he elected to?
LOL
Why don't you do a search on George W. Bush and see what that turns up?
Other that a waste treatment plant in S.F. and a bunch of what passes for
elementary schools in south Texas, the list is going to be extremely short.
They have even started taking his name OFF of a couple of places.

With a lot of exceptions in science!!! It's the peace prize that's the
joke. Arafat and Le Duc Tho? Yeah, sure. Wilson, who's contribution to
the Treaty of Versailles led us into WWII. Yeah, sure, perfect examples
of how the idiots who award the Nobel Peace Prize keep getting it wrong.

Not much to laugh, or even snicker about if you think for a minute.
The time might be near when Bush won't be able to leave US soil without fear
of arrest and trial in an international court.
I can't remember that happening before.

I believe it was the biggest part of it. I don't think the high comedy this
is all providing was anything anticipated but you have to admit, this is the
funniest thing to come down the pike in a long while. At least since Tina
Fey lampooned Sarah Palin.

American's got to vote their "angst", if you will, and pronounced sentence
on the Bush years in an election. The rest of the world got nuthin' - until
now. Obama is a smart guy and ran an exceptional campaign but it took 8
years of George W. Bush to get him all the way to the Oval Office.

Obama knows that and I'll bet he's a little embarrased by it.
Being the egomaniac anyone rising to the office of the President of the
United States has to be, I'm sure the feeling only lasted a minute but he,
none the less, understands why he won this now, rather that perhaps a little
farther down the road.

Equally important - so does everyone else. It's the worlds biggest inside
joke - EVER!
LOL

Sure, and it takes guts to run for any high office. Praise all the
rest before him, too, please. Black, white, yellow, red, and brown.

All I want to know is "What do the Norwegians expect for their 1.4
million dollar payoff, hmmm?"

Shades of Algore.

I looked for the Nobel links and liked what Rush had to say:

"LIMBAUGH: You see a pattern here, folks? Liberal sellouts. Liberal
sellouts get this prize. George Bush liberates 50 million Muslims.
Ronald Reagan liberates hundreds of millions of Europeans, saves parts
of Latin America. Any awards? No, just derision. Obama gives speeches
trashing his own country, and he gets a prize for it."

thought just occurred to me, you won't see another white male as president
for at least the next three election cycles (15 years). and that is if
obama isn't reelected, then it'll be 4 cycles (19 years). it'll be
mandatory to have a woman elected next time. and then prolly after that a
hispanic. and then after that maybe some other minority. it'll be
blasphemous to even suggest running a white male.

Robert Byrd has long hated the KKK, and my two ex-KKK uncles, who are
still sympathetic to it but quit only because of their Klan-hating
wives, think Byrd is a race traitor for endorsing civil rights laws
and Obama for President.

"Lenin called them "useful idiots," those people living in
liberal democracies who by giving moral and material support
to a totalitarian ideology in effect were braiding the rope that
would hang them. Why people who enjoyed freedom and prosperity worked
passionately to destroy both is a fascinating question, one still with us
today. Now the useful idiots can be found in the chorus of appeasement,
reflexive anti-Americanism, and sentimental idealism trying to inhibit
the necessary responses to another freedom-hating ideology, radical Islam"

How many remember the republican party was created to abolish slavery? The

Which is the best argument ever against abortion. Amazing how all the
liberals run around and deny others their property rights because of a
T&E species might actually be found to have a future use, but the
person who may actually find the cure for AIDS was aborted during

Obviously you don't. How's that gay parade working out for you?

According to Nobel's will, the Peace Prize should be awarded "to the person
who SHALL HAVE DONE the most or the best work for fraternity between
nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the
holding and promotion of peace congresses."

I saw it on another newsgroup and thought TMT would enjoy it. :-)

I also found this:

From a Girl Scout Leader in my neighborhood...

"If a conservative doesn't like guns, he doesn`t buy one. If a liberal
doesn't like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.

If a conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn`t eat meat. If a liberal
is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.

If a conservative sees a foreign threat, he thinks about how to defeat
his enemy. A liberal wonders how to surrender gracefully and still
look good.

If a conservative is homosexual, he quietly leads his life. If a
liberal is homosexual, he demands legislated respect.

If a black man or Hispanic are conservative, they see themselves as
independently successful. Their liberal counterparts see themselves as
victims in need of government protection.

If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his
situation. A liberal wonders who is going to take care of him.

If a conservative doesn't like a talk show host, he switches channels.
Liberals demand that those they don't like be shut down.

If a conservative is a non-believer, he doesn't go to church. A
liberal non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced.
(Unless it's a foreign religion, of course!)

If a conservative decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping
for it, or may choose a job that provides it. A liberal demands that
the rest of us pay for his.

If a conservative slips and falls in a store, he gets up, laughs and
is embarrassed. If a liberal slips and falls, he grabs his neck, moans
like he's in labor and then sues.

If a conservative reads this, he'll forward it so his friends can have
a good laugh. A liberal will delete it because he's 'offended'."

Why do you change my words to say despicable things and snip my

I have no medical skills beyond American Red Cross First Aid and Adult
