Watched a good bio of HH on A&EBio. I've always felt, and watching
that reitterated that thought, that watching the H-4 taxi and take
off, Hughes prolly had it at 100% power, and realized the lumbering
behemoth could not lift higher after it lost ground effect lift.
Hughes, ever the daredevil, would certainly have flown it at least in
a go-around pattern had it been capable of doing so. The claims that
it could carry 70+ troops, tanks and jeeps would have been clearly
disproved had he attempted, and failed a go around.
