Awl --

I'm warehousing (in my hovel) about 250+ carded bulb-style D-cell
flashlights, all colors. They are carded without the D-cells (req. 2).

What to do with these??

They were originally intended as a part of some camping/survival pack, but I
don't think too many people want to hump Dcells around, now that LEDs are
common, and integrated into other utilities as well.

I figger I got 3 options:

1. throw'em out...
2. Sell'em to 99c stores -- and if they don't take them, that's a sure sign
they are worthless.
3. Scavenge the bulbs? :) THEN throw'em out...
or mebbe
4. Freebies/incentives with other stuff I might be selling? But, if they
are indeed useless....

I sort of dread humping around to 99c stores.... is it worth a shot?

I guess you could call around to the dollar stores but I expect they
will only offer less than $100 for the lot. When batteries run out on
my old flashlights, I toss them in the Goodwill bags with clothes and
stuff that I give them.

The dollar store would give you about 20¢ for them, if anything. Donate
them to a shelter before hurricane season. Or Goodwill, etc.

Around here, there are constant 'garage sales' at a couple of the rental
storage place. Unlicensed flea markets, basically. Bet your area has
something similar. Those guys may give you a couple of bucks for them. A
real dollar store will NOT buy stuff from people walking in off the
street. No chain wants the risk of stolen property, roaches in the
boxes, etc. Their own warehouses or drop-ship from vendors, is the only
way they fly. I haven't seen any independent ma'n'pa dollar stores in years.

Garage sale season is starting. If you aren't having one of your own, or
know somebody that is, check your local ad paper for charities trolling
for donations for the ones they hold.

And there is always CraigsList and FreeCycle.

Lots of 10 on ebay, for people who can never find a
flashlight.

Donate to an abused shelter, is probably as good an idea as
anything. Hire a couple Cubscouts to go door to door. Most
people will spend $2.50 on a useless piece of junk if it's
for the kids.

I'm not quite sure I get what you've got in mind here.

re: "Hire a couple Cubscouts to go door to door."

To "hire" typical mean to pay for labor or personal services. In other
words, the Scouts would be doing something to benefit the OP right.

Based on your final words "Most people will spend $2.50 on a useless
piece of junk if it's for the kids", what exactly are you suggesting
the OP hire the Cub Scouts to do?

If it's to act like kids doing a fund raiser while to OP pockets the
profits, that's pretty dishonest, not to mention despicable for
considering getting the Cub Scouts involved.

If it's an actually donation to the Scouts so they can raise some
money, why would the OP need to "hire" them?

You'll need to sell them for a quarter or less to be competetive.
Could also try local "surplus" outlets.

Donate them to something, get a valid receipt from a registered
charitable organisation (maybe the SA?) then claim a valid tax
deduction. Even if the charitable org. had use (or sale) for only a
few or even threw them out they wouldn't have to outlay any cash!

The dollar stores buy in bulk from China. They won't be
interested in such a small quantity. And, they can
(probably) only buy from their own supply line.

The tax deduction sounds good, or sell them cheap at a flea
market.

So that means the flashlight itself is about $1.50.

I'm surprised nonLED flashlights are being manufactured/sold at all.

A flashlight with 2 D cells is more like a club. Heh, in fact, mag lites
with 4+ D cells ARE used as clubs, by the poh-lice.

Convert each light into fused, 100 mA constant - current sources
with banana cables (Kelvin configuration) to connect to your DMM and
clip leads.

http://www.national.com/pf/LM/LMV841.html#Overview
http://electronicdesign.com/article/power/how%20to%20think%20about%20current%20sources.aspx
http://www.edn.com/article/CA408390.html

Reassemble them as milliohmmeter adapters. (0.1V = 1 ohm) to allow
anyone with a 0.1 mV DMM to measure down to 1 milliohm.

You can replace the flashlight lens with a single-sided PCB containing
the electronics.

Great for checking relay and switch contacts, connectors,
winding resistance, commutator connections, PCB short location,
etc. etc.

Charge $49.95 for each one and send me 10%. :)

I'll be here as will our effrots for years to come so let me know.

Someone here was kind enough to shoot us some bicycle repair tools which
worked out great. They are on a ship going to Ghana as of a few days ago

I felt bad for him. My old man did the negotiations and has a knack for
finding dirt cheap suppliers. I forget where he found the least expensive

Dollar Tree, near me. Went from four D cells fer a buck, and

I can't remember the prices at BJ's Wholesale club. But the
alkalines are under a dollar each. Alkalines have four times

Heavy duties are good for places like my cousin's motel,

Hey, Twitley. Why aren't you buying inexpensive HEADLAMPS?

That's the only type of flashlight I use on a regular basis and keep
several with me in the truck and at least 1 in every room in the
house. They keep both your hands free to carry whatever metal/wood
constructs you require at the time. And you can leave both that and
your boots on in bed. Chicks love the red LED style. <wink>

It's a shame in a way but since I got on to BBS's then The Interweb,
I read a write more than I did when I was in college. I used to live
in the various libraries when I was in school. Now If I want to know
something, I switch on the computer and have a world of information
at my fingertips. The only problem is having to filter out the huge
steaming piles of male bovine droppings. *snicker*

I'm reminded why I had you filtered out. I saw you had

though, it's as Al Gore said. A leopard can't change his

Can you turn them into vibrators? At $39.95 each you could recoup your
investment rather quickly.

Not in Alabama, the legislature passed a law against selling sex toys.
According to this article, Texas has a similar law. Aren't Bible
thumpers as entertaining as Liberals when they get a chance to make law?

Approximately 47% of the households don't pay _federal_ income taxes,
due to their incomes being too low, or by qualifying for various
deductions and credits. The Child Tax Credit is a biggie, both in
terms of dollars and the number of households that claim it. You can
earn up to $50K and, if you have at least two qualifying children, end
up paying no federal income tax.

Nothing to do with the Bible - it's a public health issue.

And they're not illegal in Texas - I bought one last week for my girlfriend.

I needed a rest.

I only provided one set of batteries, though. I'm not stupid.

Not to mention, you have to keep reminding yourself that not all
information is on the 'net, Older stuff especially, will likely never be
on the internet. Just because Google and Bing can't find a fact does not
mean it isn't out there.

Actually..I know of one woman who had a heart attack while using the
Rabbit 2.

She was found, hard as a carp, toy still plugged in, both ends..and in
the wall and running.

She was about 80 however.

I wonder if I were to attach one to my front door if it would keep
the church people from coming around to proselytize? Would it repel
them or would they come back with torches and burn the house down?

Just hang a strap-on on the door with the "business end" pointing toward
the road. They'll get the idea.

Heh! I had a friggin' van-load of them come to my little ranch one day,
all suited up for "business".

I happened to be pruning trees with my chainsaw that day. I was dirty,
covered with sawchips, and draggin' on a cigarette when they pulled up.

Now... I speak the King's English just fine, but when I saw what they
were, I kind of limp-walked toward them with one leg dragging a little,
the RUNNING chainsaw hanging from my right hand, and the weed dangling
out of one corner of my mouth. Gently twitching the throttle on the saw,
I squinted harshly at them and asked, "Kin Ah hep you move thet thang
offn' my proppity?"

They moved it rather quickly, thank you! <G>

I had a batch of them show up one sunny Saturday afternoon, a Saturday
afternoon where a pair of lady friends had come over and we were all
...ah...er..playing.

When I peeped out the window at the knock...we all 3 of us answered the
door, au naturale..and as one had worn lipstick...it was obvious that
all three of us were "otherwise engaged" from the lipstick marks here
and there

They never came back.

Sigh..to be young again...snivel...

Reminds me of the time I was involved with certain gal who had a bit
of a temper. In bed, I started kissing her bare bottom and after each
kiss, I shouted ONE, smack, TWO, smack.... she ask what I was doing
and I said "QUIET!" THREE, smack, FOUR, smack..all the way to twelve.
Now, I explained, the next time you become angry with me and tell me
to kiss your ass, I can honestly say "I've kissed your ass a dozen
times, what more do you want?"

>I'm surprised nonLED flashlights are being manufactured/sold at all.

I find them to be common, and to be commonly offered for sale at most
retail establishments where one can buy flashlights, even as of early
2010.

Do keep in mind that some flashlight "brands" have an interest in
battery (or "cell") sales, and may have a profit motive to sell
less-energy-efficient ones.

Also, keep in mind that a flashlight delivering a beam as bright as that
achieved with a PR-2 incandescent lamp is still more expensive to
manufacture with LEDs as opposed to a PR-2 incandescent lamp, especially
when considering the cost of voltage-boost circuitry for a bright white
LED flashlight working well and reliably from 1 or 2 1.5V cells.
