HOW MANY GUNS ARE TOO MANY?
In order to properly discuss some aspects of the "gun control question"
we need a simple answer to a complex question.
How many guns and how many gun owners are there in America? That's a
good question. I wish there were an easy answer.
The most direct way to settle the question, polling - calling people up
and asking them how many guns they own - does not work. There is so much
fear of confiscation that a very high percentage of gun owners will deny
it. NO ONE wants to be on a government gun confiscation list.
Some people who make a living selling fear will tell you there are
thirty million gun owners and "no more than" 150 Million guns in private
hands. Others will tell you that guns last no longer than cars, so there
are only 200 million guns in circulation.
Both of these numbers ignore some inconvenient facts. First, cars wear
out much more quickly than firearms. While a ten year old car is
probably a "beater," a ten year old gun with normal wear may well be
described as "near mint."
It's very unusual for a car to last 200,000 miles, but guns seldom wear
out. It's not unusual for a gun to fire 50,000 times or more without a
single failure. It's very unusual for a gun to break within the first
10,000 shots - and most gun owners will not put 10,000 rounds through a
gun in six lifetimes. So guns tend to last a very long time.
For example, the Sharps Rifle Company built perhaps 100,000 rifles
between 1850 and 1880. The records of that company still exist and an
amazingly high percentage of original Sharps rifles still exist - and
are still ready to go hunt buffalo!
A very high percentage of rifles, such as Savage's original Model of
1899 and Winchester's 1894 survive in quantity. I see numbers of these
prized rifles, built and sold from the gay 90's to the Great Depression,
at every place gun owners get together. The price of these fine firearms
has risen to the point that newer and cheaper guns have largely taken
their place in the field. But they are ready when their owners are.
The same thing can be said for most quality firearms of the period.
Winchester's Model of 1897 and Model 1912 are still quite common in the
field - although the value of these shotguns has also appreciated to the
point that many quality guns from the Victorian age have become "safe
queens."
Handguns, such as Colt's "Single Action Army," the various Smith and
Wesson's, and other high quality firearms also survive in large numbers.
Large in comparison to their original production numbers, which was well
suited to a total population of 100 Million or so.
The majority of these guns are still serviceable, although many are
"safe queens" whose owners shoot newer and less valuable firearms. I
will hazard a guess of the survival percentage in a moment.
The second problem is a related one. More than 350 million new guns have
been made and sold in the United States since 1949, and virtually all of
those are in service, living in someone's gun rack, gun safe, closet, or
perhaps under their pillow. More tens of millions of newly made guns
such as the Glocks, Berettas, SIG's, Bersa's, and others, have been
imported.
In addition to these, millions of surplus military weapons such as the
various Mauser rifles and Luger and Walther pistols, have been imported
and sold. In sum, it appears that at least 425 million firearms have
made their way to America's civilian market since the beginning of 1950.
If some of the estimates of the number of surplus firearms are correct,
that total will exceed 500 million.
So how many of these guns are still in existence? Taking the ratio of
pre to post 1950 firearms as a basis for calculation, there are between
600 and 650 million firearms currently in circulation in the United
States.
While many Americans own more than one gun and some own none, it seems
two guns per American is a very safe estimate.
"I am for doing good to the poor, but I differ in opinion of the
means. I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not
making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of
it. In my youth I travelled much, and I observed in different
countries, that the more public provisions were made for the
poor the less they provided for themselves, and of course became
poorer. And, on the contrary, the less was done for them, the
more they did for themselves, and became richer." -- Benjamin
Franklin, /The Encouragement of Idleness/, 1766

FWIW, my Dad gave me a 16 gage when I was 11. The 2nd ID gave me an

The stock answer is more than I need but less than I want ;)
So, how many is MY allotment? ...just - one - more...
Now with Interpol being able to do the UN's bidding with impunity and no
accountability in the US thanks to President Wee-Wee, guns, ammo and
reloading components are high on the list for confiscation.

My wife, youngest step-daughter & I all shoot competitively, both pistol &

educational purposes. Let's just say we have enough hardware to go around.

There is no such thing as an "Interpol officer." They can't make arrests.
When any country works with Interpol, its own officers are seconded to
Interpol's international coordinators, for multi-country pursuit of child
pornographers, drug dealers, money launders, and so on.
But US law officers working with Interpol follow their own country's laws.
Nothing is changed in that regard by the new agreement. All the agreement
does is to extend certain diplomatic privileges to Interpol agents.

Same here. Lets just say..that I own in excess of 5x of what Karl

A very considerable excess actually.
And suitable ammunition for the practical ones.

Yes, yes, Ed. Of course.
The leftists wanted the UN to monitor elections in the USA during and
after the Nov 99 election.
Don't be surprised if they show up under Obama's watch in 2010 or
especially 2012, when the left over TARP money just wasn't enough to
buy loyalty and things start going south.

Apparently only Karl does. None of the other big strong men in this

I, by the way have zero guns.
When you can't take care of, or keep track of, the ones you
already have. The actual numeric quantity is left as an exercise for
the owner.

To correctley answer this question you must determine how many firearms
have been manufactured by HSM types that are still in circulation and usable

Simple rules to maintaining your collection or arms depot depending.
1. Don't brag about how many and what types of guns you have.
2. Secure them properly
3. Remember rule one.
This also applies to other valuable possessions.

Hey, I did the same thing! My first real job paid for an Air Pistol
that the US Shooting Team was selling to raise funds for the '84
Olympics. Still have it, and shoot a match every monday night with it.
It's still more accurate than I am, but I just bought a house with a
10 meter basement, so I might have to buy some fancy gun and a scuba
tank next year.
Otherwise, I'd say I have enough, but the last time my girlfriend shot

left-handed self, so now I'm looking for a S&W 22A with a dot for her
to use...and I'm always looking for a nice .357 snubby.
Oh well done sir..veddyveddy well done indeed!

I'm short of ammo, though, and my favorite range has closed. I have to look
around for a new one. Meantime, I only load .32 H&R Magnum and .38 Spl. I
have to get some .45 ACP dies, seeing as how we have a shortage.
Ranger, I can bring .22, .32 S&W Long (Colt Pocket Positive),. .32 H&R
Magnum, .38 Spl., and, if I can get ammo, .45 ACP. You'll have fun.

If Johnny goes to school and doesn't learn how to add, he may learn it
later, and he's not particularly dangerous. Being a pistol instructor puts
much higher demands on your teaching skills. On the basis of a 3 hour
safety lecture, I was willing to go into the range the next night and give
15 total strangers loaded handguns. I've taught several hundred people how
to shoot, and we never had a serious accident. I typically had an
assistant instructor for every 2 or 3 students. By the end of class, most
of the students could keep all their shots on a standard 50 foot target.
This was at MIT, and we tended to get reasonably bright students, although
there were exceptions.
I now teach as an assistant instructor with another club. Their course are
open to the public. All live firing is done with an instructor working
individually with each student. About 15 years ago they had a woman sign
up for the course with the sole purpose of committing suicide. She managed
to get one shot into her head before an instructor could stop her. She
survived, but with extensive brain damage. It still gives me the willies
just thinking about it.

Thanks for the offer, and I may take you up on it someday. I'm pretty

You have to pass a FBI and AFIS check to get a CCF. And there's lots of
paperwork just to take a new puppy home. They know who we are and where to
come get us. That's when things should get interesting.
Steve
> Do you guys really want to wave your dicks where the feds can watch?
afaik, there is little interest in dicks when they are 10 meter Olympic
quality air pistols. A 7.1 gram, .177 projectile at 400 or 500 fps doesn't
even inspire fear in a healthy rat.
However, if you've never filled out a 4473, never belonged to the NRA or
GOA, never have belonged to an organization like USPSA, never bought a
hunting license, or never belonged to a range, you might be able to fly
under the radar. While you're at it, you might want to refine any opinions
you express in public, or better yet, just remain silent.

Should have been a folding stock rather than that rather worthless
pistol grip abortion.

Thanks!

Steak and red wine. Perfect. Mmmmm.
Good point.

FWIW, Google has your blog labeled as "adult content."
Then what fun would life be?
Sad when a bunch of little boys think the adults are trying to take
their toys away...

Well, Dan, in Obama's first week in office his attny general laid out
the plan for AWB2, to include classifying most centerfire rifle
ammunition as "armor piercing." But by then Obama already had too
much on his plate and the AG retracted.
Burying your head in the sand is not how to become educated, but good
luck with that approach.
Don't disturb them. It keeps them occupied in their basements, oiling their
guns and making ammo, and out of real trouble.

Pelosi and Reid let Holder know that he doesn't make the laws, and that they
oppose any such ban.
However, little has been said about the real effect and purpose of that
statement. Sales of guns and ammo went through the roof, stimulating the
economy with a shot of spending from an unlikely segment of society. d8-)
