The nation's five largest for-profit insurers closed 2009 with a combined profit
of $12.2 billion, according to a report by the advocacy group Health Care for
American Now (HCAN).
....
The HCAN report attributed this year's profits largely to insurers' dropping
coverage of 2.7 million people, who then moved onto public insurance plans such
as Medicaid.

And the conservatives think nothing is wrong.
And the payouts to the Republicans are at an all time high too.
And every American is paying for it in increased medical costs.

Cliff would prefer the alternative, where the insurance companies would not
be able to make any payouts because of of no profits.
And, after all, their profits, bonuses & perks are worth so much
more than the lives of the people ...
OTOH in most western nations they get better care for about a third
of the cost .....

The Swiss insurance companies pay their claims. They have no profits.
If you understand how health care insurance works in the US, you recognize
that there are two ways for an insurance company to make more profit: Cut
down the size of their covered communities, leaving only the young and
healthy ones; or sit back and wait for health care costs to rise.
If you don't recognize those points, you don't understand how it works.
Oh, there's a potential third way, which the insurance companies may yet
accomplish: Get the government to mandate private coverage, with government
subsidies; fight off price controls; and then sit back and count your money.
This is an Idiot Policy that rips off the whole country, something like
Medicare Part D.

A story in the paper today about the increases in premiums that are
going up all over the country shows just how bad the situation with the
insurance companies is. Some of them are raising their prices 20 to 30
percent or more. This is good news though. It shows that no matter how
much republicans drag their feet and try to sandbag health insurance
reform the problem just keeps getting worse and worse. They can derail
Obama's health care bill for now but all the health care problems
inherent in our system are just getting worse. The insurance companies
make record profits and less and less people are covered. Just how long
can that situation go on before it blows up? That's the problem with the
republicans plan to simply block health care reform. We have a health
care volcano that is coming closer and closer to erupting and the
republicans do nothing but fight to maintain the status quo. Eventually
it's going to blow and enough people will demand changes that even the
republicans will have to concede. I wonder how long that is going to
take? We have to be getting near a breaking point.
