Check out this seller ohojim on eBay. He/she/It has personally ruined metal
related searches on eBay for me. He lists 10 bazillion simultaneous
auctions of the same book (most of them from Lindsay's catalog) which now
appear in any keyword search I do.
For example, if I search on "sheet metal", instead of the normal two pages
of listings, I now have to wade through 10 or 11 pages of his listings to
find anything of interest. There are other similar sellers.
I've emailed eBay to suggest they limit the number of simultaneous auctions
of the same item (that's what a Dutch auction is for) and add a "kill-file"
feature so bidders could screen out certain obnoxious sellers.

I seem to recall being able to use the advanced search features to
exclude words, (like the name of a seller), from your search.
After scooting over to ebay and giving it a try I discovered that the
name of the seller is no longer considered part of the "item
description". Shucks, darn, and other comments. Another search engine
*improved* into uselessness.
Later,
Joe
I wonder if eBay would consider a way to exclude seller names from a search?

You know, this fellow has had over 17,000 auctions in the last 30 days. That's
pushing it.

You may not be able to exclude the sellers ID, but you can
exclude his location. For example... lathe -boston

There is a roundabout way.
Try a search for:
Morse taper
Now try the same search with this addition:
Morse taper -"unusual & interesting books"
and note the difference. The trick is to look for a common phrase in
the descriptions which will *not* appear in what you really want, and
include it in quotes with a minus sign '-' preceding it.
Yes, I tried:
-ohojim
and it didn't work, so I looked for other options.
Another of my peeves are the vendors who include a list of
hundreds of random object names in the description -- sometimes with
options so it is black on black or white on white or some other
invisible setting. I've found that by wondering how a search on
some machine tool item could bring up stuffed plush toys. So, I used
the "find in page" option from Netscape's "edit" menu, and when the
highlighted area showed up in a blank monochrome space, I started
looking for tricks to make it show up.
An example of one who is not using the hidden text trick, but
who *is* using the "endless list of words" trick is auction #2083683495.
That one shows up in a search on:
+AMP +crimp* +die*
and it has no relationship. I excluded it with a:
-disney
One way is to use the "preferences" to set your own choice for
foreground and background colors, and have them override what is in the
page.
However, an easier way is to sweep out a section of what looks
blank, using the mouse, and it will change the background color,
revealing what is being done. For those, I again look for some words in
there which are highly unlikely to show up in a valid auction, and put
them in the search as "excludes" as above. Typically, all of one
vendor's auctions which are set up this way use the same list of words,
and you may have to deal with at most three of these in a typical
search.
Of course -- you *could* report them to eBay (since this is
agin' the rules) and wait for them to be kicked off, but this way is
quicker.
Enjoy,
DoN.

Safer to exclude phrases instead of single words, as in my
example in another followup in this thread.
Your search would exclude sellers in New York, or which
mentioned that the lathe was recently refitted with "New Departure
bearings".
It would also exclude a CNC lathe with an option for manual
operation, as well as something whose description includes "runs good"
or something similar.
Look for common phrases in his descriptions, and exclude them,
using quotation marks to group words into a single unit.

Did anyone check on his feedback?

Here's one of my saved searches:
shaper -(book,ornamental,manual,manuals,cat,catalog,catalogs,"shaper
work holding","shaper operation","build metal shaper","how to").
I just added the stuff in quotes today, and it cleaned out the bozo's
listings. Just save the search so you don't have to re-enter it.
Pete Keillor
They already have such a limit. You're not allowed to list more than 10
identical items. Their language is a bit cloudy as to whether you can list
10 in each of a ton of different categories but I just sent them a complaint
about him anyway so we'll see what happens. Before I sent it I did a bit of
research and here's what I found.
A search for "working sheet metal" brings up 93 listings. Obviously I
didn't take the time to verify that each and every one is his but of the 93,
86 had an identical title, all in caps, and of the 10 or so I clicked on all
were his so it would seem he listed it 86 times!
A search for "flying ultralights" brings up 80 listings, 79 of which appear
to be his.

Not necessarily. If something doesn't sell, you can relist it without
paying an additional listing fee the second time. Some ebay sellers
take advantage of this by deliberately listing as many things as they
can on "free" days, not bothering to make the prices realistic or
provide reasonable photos and descriptions of each. Most, of course,
don't sell. Then they relist the same things (or different ones, for
that matter) over a longer span of time, this time with reasonable
photos, descriptions, and prices - but without having to pay listing
fees.
They don't care if they waste *your* time. They're saving a few cents
per auction.

If the auctions all started on the 26th it was the day of the free
listings for all sellers. If that is not the case, he will be in for
a surprise when he gets his eBay invoice.

It does appear after checking about 20 of the 200+ pages of listings
that all of his auctions started on 26 Dec. I sure hope Ebay don't
allow them all to be relisted for "Free" again, even though there was
no charge to list them initially n this date, but then again I would
not put it past Ebay to do crap like that!

So this should not happen again hopefully. I believe he is honest in
his reply, due to the fact he replied and addressed what the issue
was. If he did not care he would have simply ignored the email I sent
him or replied with a nasty back.
We'll just have to wait and see won't we?

I just took a look at the hmtl for auction #2083683495, mentioned in
another message in this thread, and found the following text inside
the code. The "font size=1 pixel", and other html I don't understand
make this invisible on the ebay auction web page. For completeness I
included the entire list, about 32000 words. This guy must be breaking
some rule, somewhere.
This guy is giveing the auction winner a CD that promotes a couple of
hundred items outside Ebay's system. It looks like a pile of crap.
There's no reason to read to the end of this message past this point
unless you have a lot of time on your hands. Here it is....

Better watch what you post, you may be classed as an associate
conden-whatever net nanny like me! ;-) But then again consider the
source that posted that. An individual that changes his user name
faster than a whore can slip out of her clothes. A lurker, yea, lurker
my ass! An idiot is more like it.
An easier way to see text where background and foreground colors are the
same is pressing alt-A (on *nix systems) or ctrl-A (ms windows).
Selecting text won't help with readability in the "font size=1 pixel"
case that Al Dykes mentioned:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2083683495 )
Instead set preferences to use your default fonts and override document
fonts if concerned about this, or use a set of fonts that don't go that
small.

That is probably why I don't see this problem -- I have the
fonts set large because I read from a distance from the screen (to keep
the distance comfortable without glasses.)
