Is there a list of procedures for calabration out there. If so, please
tell us about it.

Micrometer calibration is described pretty well in measurement
books such as Kennedy or Farago and Curtis. Mitutoyo gives out
their micrometer calibration procedures at their calibration
seminars (costs money to attend); they've also faxed us copies
of their calibration procedures at our request when we called and
inquired about having them calibrate our micrometers.

I'm not sure this is official, but I use hardened and ground 1-2-3 blocks
to calibrate my Mikes. The 0-1" is set at 0, the 1-2" at 1,etc. I don't
have any real large mikes but with two blocks up to 6-7" mikes could be
calibrated.

A set of grade "b" blocks is only $99 at most import tool houses...
worth the money... within 50 millionths.

Use a bearing ball for 1-2" mics, and buy a few standards for larger
mics. Much less than a full set of gage blocks that can be set up in .0001
increments! I use a 1/2" grade 25 ball for my 1" mic. 1" and larger
bearing balls can be expensive, though. But a set of standards is cheap.

A 1" mike can be calibrated against itself. After that, buy standards in
the even inch sizes--2", 4", 6", etc. Even good USA standards are pretty
cheap. Each standard will calibrate two mikes. This does not allow
checking at each end of the capacity, so will not show a worn-out mike,
but I think for the vast majority of machinists is more than
satisfactory. And I suppose it's not really correct to call this
calibrating; it's just checking the adjustment (as opposed to certified
calibration by QC or the toolroom).
