You get positive brownie points for a well-written and low-key piece of
spam. It got me thinking about how many potential users of your new
product you probably reached by spamming rec.crafts.brewing. The answer
I came up with was immeasurably close to zero. The fact that there are
probably only a couple of dozen readers left doesn't help, but we're
here because we enjoy brewing and there's a very wide gulf between
brewing for the pleasure of it and brewing for a living.
Negative points for
Spamming
Using the name of your competitor in the subject
Posting from Google
Setting a sexist tone in the first two words
A web site that demands that you register before showing anything
Copying a successful idea without changing it hoping to jump on the
bandwagon when in fact you're just diluting the potential user base.
