I think it's a matter of adding up your losses + desired final volume
and divide by roughly two.
So for a 5-gallon batch (for me) I have
1/2 gallon lost in the bottom of mash tun (for me)+
0.15 gallons absorbed per pound of grain
for a 14 pound of grain recipe that means 2.8 gallons lost in the
grain + another 1/2 or so lost in the bottom of my mash tun for 2.6

I use either of two methods.
One, I let Strangebrew (or whatever brewing software you use) tell me
how much sparge water to use. This usually works out well.
Two, for bigger beers I have recently started draining the mash
completely without adding sparge water and subtracting the run-off
volume from the total volume I want to collect. Then I divide that in

I use both but not long enough that I've noticed a difference.
However, the turkey fryer burner is for my HLT and the Banjo is for my
BK so of course I'll use more propane with the Banjo since it'll run
longer. If you're looking to save money on propane why not build a
