Interested in using a Minibrew conical. Curious about peoples
impressions of them, particularly their resistance to light. I'm very
concerned about skunkiness in a white fermenter. Yes, I know SS would
probably be better, but to tell you the truth, my other option would
be a 55 Gallon food safe trashcan.

Any thoughts on the matter would be appreciated.

good luck brewing

I ferment in white buckets and glass carboys and have never had a
problem with light so I don't see why these would pose any more risk.

Is your brew closet (or wherever you store your fermenting beer) in
direct sunlight? Do you leave mercury vapor lights or fluorescent lights
burning in there all the time?

If not, nothing to worry about. If you use fluorescents and want to be
paranoid for the short time they are on, you can get yellow covers for
them - or just use incandescents.

Personally I find conicals to be a neat idea from the engineering point
of view, and over-priced from the practical point of view. YMMV. Bring
on the food-grade Rubbermaid if you want to go big (though you might do
even better looking for used-once 55 gallon food grade drums/barrels).

If you ferment in a lit (sunlit or other) you can place a contractor's
bag over your fermenter.

I put my old T-shirts over my cowboys, secured at the neck w/ binder clips
or elastic bands...Skunk-free since 1997!

I just invert the box the carboy shipped in over the top.

I used to do the same thing with my glass carboy except mine wasn't
upside-down. Instead I cut notches in the top flaps so when I closed
them the air lock could stick out.

I feel conicals are a rather involved way to avoid siphoning and
living on the Gulf Coast keeping fermenter cool is the challenge which
I don't see one can deal with in a conical
