I have done a few local craft shows that were a bust - didn't even make back
booth fees. People were looking for ideas, not making purchases. I would
like to ask some questions of the folks that do craft shows as I am applying
for my first juried one.
First, they require general liability insurance to include "products and
completed operations coverage". What does that mean? Does your home owners
policy carrier also provide this type of insurance? Do you pay for a year's
coverage or per show?
I am required to have a three sided back drop, 6' high, not see through. I
understand the reasoning for this. Where do you find something like this
and is it possible to find used ones? As this is my first show, finances
are limited but I want the booth to look professional.
If you are in a position to accept credit cards, how do you do that at a
show if phone lines are not available?
Do you accept personal checks at out-of-state shows?
If you have never done a particular show before, how do you know how much
inventory to take?
I know I have asked a lot of questions and I thank you for taking the time
to read and/or answer this post. Any other ideas or suggestions will be
greatly appreciated as I would like this show to be a success. Of course, I
know, that the same show may be successful one year and a bust the next but
I am hoping for the best.
Thanks,
Laurie

Take some time and skim thru the archives and you will find most of this
covered at some point.
One last question - if there is a long enough gap between the date when you
will get your acceptance letter and the show, you may not want to go thru any
of this until you know you are in! (you did say you were "applying" - what did
they want on the application? - slides, pics, work and/or display?)
whew. I'm gonna go rest my fingers now!

Thank you for your response.
You are right about the types of shows done previously. I understand what
you are saying about making too big a jump, but I haven't been able to find
any shows that fall in between the two. I have found a lot of shows more
involved than this one and a lot more expensive. The fees for this show
(for a saturday and sunday) are $130-$200 depending on booth size and
location. I don't know how "picky" these promoters are. The info letter I
got said all merchandise had to be hand made - no problem for me. Nothing
allowed in booth that wasn't approved on application, limit of three
categories per booth. Is jewelry normally considered one category or do
they break it down for necklaces, earrings, pins, etc.?
The promoter requires a binder as proof of insurance so I guess I need to
check into this.
Yes, this is an indoor show but I don't own any style canopy. I had thought
about latticework panels but wondered about the weight and stability.
> You may also find it useful to go to The Crafts Reports discussion page:

Thanks for the link.
>what did they want on the application? - slides, pics, work and/or display?
What I received was what they call their rules/lease agreement. They
require 3-5 pictures of work, preferably including one of booth. After they
receive this agreement back with the pictures, then they send an application
for the show. After they get that back, they let you know if you have been
accepted. The application for the show is apparently a booklet with
applications for all the shows the promoters have for the entire year.
I know this is a big jump, but I have reached a point that word-of-mouth
sales have slacked off and my web site isn't drawing many sales. I figure
that if I get into this show, that will make it easier for me for future
shows because I will already have the necessary set ups. (And maybe a
little more knowledge.)
Thanks again for responding.
Laurie
Ummm, depends on the policy, though there may be maximum dollars or maximum
percentages of you household contents value. Also some may be covered under
the auto insurance, too.
But you make a valid point. Pro sellers should find out for sure how you are
insured currently when that stuff is in the vehicle and see what it would cost
to increase that amount if you need more coverage. A pro seller needs business
insurance at all stages of the game.
A non pro seller may be able to get riders on their homeowners insurance to
cover their shows or may already have it within that insurance. Sometimes this
is the cheaper route than getting totally separate insurance. Sometimes it
also depends on how local what you are doing is. Some things covered for under
50 miles might not be automatically covered for further.

You can make a frame with PVC pipe and put a "curtain" (open hems at
top & bottom slip over the top & bottom pipes before you put the sides
in) on. This is done at SF convention art shows all the time.

When I bought a new-to-me car this spring, the first one in forever with a loan
(and therefore worth insuring!), I asked about these things specifically.
The agent said that the auto insurance covers the car (comprehensive) and any
relevant medical costs. The contents of the car (other than people!) are not
covered. That would normally be covered under your home-owners (or renters)
policy. I asked about $$ limitations, and she said she would have to check to
be exact, but the general gist was a couple suitcases full of clothes was the
idea - nowhere near the $$$ values I needed.
btw, this is Allstate, if anyone cares.
nope, by categories they usually mean:
woodworking
ceramics
watercolor
etc.
I wonder about 3 per booth - do they allow booth sharing? (might help with the
cost)
Laurie
Laurie
Laurie
that's how I would read it - a call to the promoters might clarify.
One thing you might want to do to make your PVC frames sturdier is to drill
holes in the connectors (in the corners), run a wire diagonally both ways
and tighten with a turnbuckle (get them at the hardware store; they're for
adjusting the tension). You'd need to go both ways on the back section, and
I'd also go from the bottom rear to the top front on the sides (only one
wire on each side). I've got a set of shelves and a table, both homemade,
and this seems to make them much more stable---a good idea since customers
seem to think that everything in an art show booth is screwed into the
ground---NOT!
I won't wish you luck at your show, just SELL OUT!
Linda
The more things change, the more they stay insane.
From what I've heard, if the booth is listed under just the one "store name" it
works. You have the items on consignment and pay her the amount of the
consignment for her assistance in the booth. Then you divide up the costs and
profits however you want; there can only be one set of receipts. But if asked,
most shows will say no sharing.
I don't do shows, but friends do. I think this info is correct. It's fudging
their rules but as far as I understand it is technically legal. Just don't
both of you distribute different business cards as that's one way the show can
decide that the rules have been bent too far.

I think 3", but I'd think 2" will work, too. You can get the "stand"

This I don't know about, since the show is likely to have different
rules than SF con art shows. ;)

Well, yes and no. If you go to the EZup catalog or web site and compare
prices, you will think it is a great price. But I believe that the ones sold
by Sam's and BJ's are not made to the same specs as the ones EZup markets
directly. (I can't remember *where* I came by that info, tho!) What I have
heard from most professional crafters is the EZup is not all that much better
than the really cheap canopies you can buy at Kmart. What I have done is
bought one of those ($90 on sale, no sides included) and will make it work
until I need a really good one (the "really good" ones will set you back about
$600-1,000) or give up doing outdoor shows!

WOW!
Something with a sunken ship in it would be appropriate and look great hanging
with or near the other piece. Or coral reef look would be pretty, too.
If you have in mind making jewelry rather than a panel, a picture of hoards of
beads flowing out of a treasure chest covering most of the chest into big piles
at its base and surrounding would be pretty. Might also look quite nice in the
display windows. As long as all this was on a base and could be moved from
where created to where filmed to the display spot. Pad most the inside of the
chest finishing with a top thick layer of styrofoam so you can stick strands
flowing out on it, then a thick layer of a variety of loose beads with some
more finished jewelry laying on top, flowing out from the chest. If the base
around it was also covered in styrofoam, it would be easier to secure and
pieces of coral with necklaces dripping off them could be added. Attach some
Styrofoam to the inside lid of the chest and it, too could be filled with the
flowing beads. It would be less realistic (how would those pieces hold at that
angle) but so much more dramatic that I'd say forget the realism, besides, we
want fun fantasy more than realism. Also then, how the trunk actually looked
wouldn't be too important. Wouldn't even have to really be a trunk. Make the
lid out of styrofoam, rounded on the outside, attach dark leather where the
outside should be. For the base, a crate upside down, styrofoam on the top,
leather on the outside, . . . I think you get the picture!
LOL. You didn't even "ask" for suggestions! But all the above came to mind so
instantly that I had to write this, and I just may make something like this for
myself! Sure would be a neat way to display a lot of my lampwork, beads, and
jewelry that I love to make but is too feminine for me to wear, yet made of
beads I still want to keep. My "sailor's chest" from my seagoing days. The
proportions could vary from something super tiny to fit in a nook or big enough
that it would need "the other Carol's" house to display it right! <g> Or a
storefront at a place like Shipwreck's. I've a table near the fireplace in
mind for mine. Lights of a fire reflecting on it sure would be pretty. Might
even build it with some miniature lights in it or fiber optics with the light
source for them hidden in the base of the chest.

Nona, the new Rio Grande gems & findings catalog has finally come out
(I got mine yesterday) and it, like their tool and display catalogs,
is completely free. There's not nearly the choice in beads that some
other catalogs have, but the finding are wonderful. Call (800)
545-6566 and ask for both the gem & findings and tool catalogs. You
won't be disappointed. You may think at first that the tool catalog
is too much aimed at people manufacturing jewelry, but if you keep
looking you'll find wonderful things that will make beading much
easier. Their prices are very good, too, particularly for the
middle-of-the-line products like pliers and cutters.
Incidentally, I was wrong in my e-mail about General Beads not having
an 800 number, but I forgot to bring the catalog in and, as I
mentioned, they didn't advertise in the September/October issue of
Beadwork, which is the only resource I have at work (I got
disorganized because I had to spend yesterday getting the switch that
opens the side door, extends the under-floor ramp, and lowers my
husband's wheelchair-adapted van fixed, as it was only opening the
door, not doing all the rest). I also failed to mention that their
catalog is free if you order any of their bead samplers and you might
really like the Delica sampler (about three grams each of ten colors)
and the new Delica colors sampler (about one gram each of something
like thirty colors). Neither is a real bargain per bead but both are
a wonderful introduction to Delicas and do provide a nice selection of
colors in quantities more than sufficient for earrings or other small
pieces. I'll bring it in tomorrow, although someone else may be able
to provide it.
Incidentally, my grocery store doesn't sell Beadwork, either. I found
out about it because I subscribe to another of their magazines,
Piecework, but I've never seen Beadwork on a shelf. But then, my area
doesn't have any bead shops, where I might expect to see it. If you
would like to subscribe, you can call (800) 340-7496 but it costs
$24.95 for one year (6 issues). I think Bead & Button and Jewelry
Crafts are both less expensive. If you do subscribe, you'll find that
you can tell a lot about bead sellers from the ads. You'll be able to
tell which sellers carry general lines and supplies and which only
carry high-grade semi-precious gemstone beads or lamp beads just by
looking at the ads.

Among the catalogs I listed in my e-mail to you was Rings & Things,
which I think is even better than Fire Mountain, particularly for
quality. They do have a charge for orders under their minimum but the
minimum is fairly low ($50 I think). You can save up to meet the
minimum or maybe find other beaders in your area and join up to make
an order over the minimum, and get more for your money as their prices
are very good. Not only do you get a thick catalog at once, but they
send out smaller updates regularly and they've got a good idea of
what's selling _now_ and try to have the supplies on hand so that
people can stay competitive at craft fairs, etc. For example, they
were the first general catalog I saw to offer stretch cord and all the
crystal colors, as well as the triple-drilled and toggle beads, for
the crystal and power bracelets that are so popular right now.
Beadcats, Shipwreck Beads, Beads Galore, and Beyond Beadery are all
very good general sources, too. Beadcats has the very best selection
of stringing material I've seen. Gypsy Wind carries lovely crystal
beads that are now out of production, but is a bit expensive.
Ornamental Resources has the most eclectic collection of decorative
items I can imagine, but often quantities are limited because they
offer such unusual items, and the catalog is very expensive. Caravan
Beads mostly carries seed beads, at very good prices, and also carries
the Mirrix loom at a lower price than Fire Mountain's.

I just realized that I'd managed to pick up a really old edition of
the catalog, like 1998 or so, so the prices are probably wrong, but
their ad in this month's Jewelry Craft says that they have four times
as much merchandise on their web site, www.genbead.com, than they do
in their catalog, so you might want to go directly there. Still, the
samplers are good bargains, with a dozen 4.5 g vials in the sampler,
33 new colors in _tiny_ vials in that sampler, 20 different triangle
beads in three sizes, a bunch of twisted hexagonal beads, 8 size 8
delicas, 13 vials for Czech bugle beads plus 15 vials of Czech seed
beads, and 500-1000 g of Indian (the subcontinent) beads, all for
varying prices, at least in my old catalog. I know I got at least
three of the Miyuki (Delica and others) samplers just a couple of
months ago, so they're still selling them.
The new colors in the tiny vials are just incredible. The vials are
genuinely tiny, but there are still quite a few beads in each.

issues, just like Beadwork) for $12.00, which is half the newsstand
price. You can call (800) 528-1024 to subscribe. Be sure to mention
you've got a card with the $12.00 rate, as the usual rate is $15.00.

Oops, I just called that number to change my address (our post office
moved but the new numbering scheme meant our old box didn't make the
move) and I discovered that the number has changed to (800) 784-5709,
probably just after they went to press with the October issue.
I don't know anything about the Caravan in Chicago that I gave you the
number for from Beadwork, and they may be a very good company, too,
but _this_ Caravan Beads sponsors the Delica Challenges and puts out a
wonderful book that really the catalog of the Challenge. I fell in
love with the first book, particularly the "Sorry, Charlie" entry (the
employees at Caravan agreed with me, so a picture may be available on
the Web site). The second Challenge is over, but the third, with the
theme "Out of this World", is still open. There are rules on size and
bead content, which you'll find on their site, I believe. If I could
figure out how to make a black SR-71 without pandering to the false
belief that it can leave the atmosphere, I'd be tempted to enter, even
though I'd probably go blind making something that big entirely from
little black delicas.
Nah, Lewis -- we wouldn't want to lose that may hours of bead-playing time!!!
Course, if she had the opportunity to pick up a sailor on the way....

Carol, I swore I would stay off the newsgroup until my newsreader
program got rid of the "Hurtful remark" header, but as so many people
are responding to various other questions in the thread, I thought I'd
take a peek and see if I was missing anything....
I was almost literally on the floor laughing my head off over your
response to Lewis. Thanks for the priceless comment of the day!
one of the many Carols
Carol -- Right after I got the car, I figured the driving distance and decided
that if I EVER drove to SLC, it would have to be to move there. LOL. It is a
solid three days of never getting out of the car, I hate that.
Becki
LMAO
Bec - COOL!! I think your car will hold all your beads, and who needs anything
else??? LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!

Why are you replying to something that was posted two months ago and is a
long dead issue?
...or is this some weird computer glitch?

I use Netscape, and it does seem to have been throwing in old posts on
all my active newsgroups. Don't know what's up......
