Can anyone tell me what it's all about?! I know where Lundy is, but
what's Puffin and what Jubilee is this?
Thank you, whoever, wherever, you are.
It is John Dyke. He prepares the artwork and designs for many of
the stamps issued by Lundy. The value of 2 Puffin is equivalent to
the British pence or 2 pence. The Puffin value was created by
Martin Coles Harmon when he purchased the island in 1929. The
British GPO had pulled out from Lundy and Harmon decided to charge
for all mail entering or leaving the island. Lundy has had
permission to issue its stamps and charge for carriage since 1929
and was the first of the British Isles to print stamps for this
purpose. However, Lundy is not recogized by the UPU and
consequently these stamps are not considered to be official issues
- rather they would be classified as semi-official or cinderellas
by the purists.
There are quite a number of collectors of Lundy material and a
specialist study group called the Lundy Collectors Club. Anyone
wanting more information can E-mail me their snail-mail address and
I will forward to the society President.
If anyone would like more brief articles on Lundy and its postal
and other history please post to the r.c.s. newsgroup your thoughts
and I will be happy to write an occasional piece about Lundy.
I hope this proves helpful
