Last winter, on a snowy and bitterly cold day, I needed to
look at something bright and beautiful, so I set out to revise
my pages about the roses and their cultural history, and
famous flower paintings.

You are all invited to see the result at

http://thematicalstamps.school.dk/frame_Roses.htm
http://thematicalstamps.school.dk/frame_FlowerPaintings.htm

Enjoy :-)

Very nice Mette,
A rose is also featured on one of the pair of the very first christmas stamps
the Austrian 12 groschen 1937 des by Willi Dachauer.

Gossip has it, that these roses conceal a portrait of Mr. Hitler.

Thanks Mette for those two nice pages !

If you wish to add some French stamps on roses here is what I have found
:
Dallay # Yvert # Scott #
1387 1356 1043
1388 1357 1044
3240 3219
3278 3248
3279 3249
3280 3250
(the last 4 were issued in 1999 and are not listed in my '99 Scott)

As for any French stamp, you can see the scans on the Philatelix site :
www.philatelix.fr
Just type the Dallay # at the top right of the main page (after
"Recherchez un timbre-poste :")

The 3 last stamps were issued in a nice mini-sheet, Dallay 3280A
(unfortunately, due to a bug, the corresponding scan does not appear on
the Philatelix site :-(

(I send a personal copy of this post to Alain Ménard, designer of the
site and he may have corrected that when you visit the site ;-)

If you wish to use one of those stamps on your site, just tell me and I
will make scans for you.

Thanks for the visit, Rodney. There are quite a number of
stamps -- roses or not -- that conceal portraits of Herr Hitler.
Even a very "interesting" personage, I wouldn't like to show
any rose-stamps with his face on ... ;-)

A good start, Mette! Tulips next, then peonies, and petunias, and
chrysanthemums, and rhododendrons, and.... :^)

I noted that the web page features the Canada rose issue from a couple of
years ago. The "White Star" stamp from that issue was recently featured in a
recent edition of Canada's Stamp Details" publication from Canada Post:

"Canada Post is proud to announce that the Canadian White Star placed 1st in
the 'World's Most Beautiful Stamp Continental Cup in America' and 3rd in the
'World's Most Beautiful Stamp' competition during the 7th Stamp World Cup.
This prestigious contest belongs to the Paris-based Timbropresse Group
--leader of the French-speaking philatelic press."

This stamp is a Vancouver creation throughout: I understand that the rose
was created by a Vancouver-area horticulturalist (I don't know the name).
The photograph was taken by a Vancouver photographer, Alex Waterhouse
Hayward. The stamp was designed by another Vancouverite, Gerry Takeuchi.
